La Valse des Mansengs Domaine Horgelus 2017

WAS £13.50 NOW just £10 a bottle for this weekend only! "This is the most exciting discovery I have made since I began writing this column — a true revelation! It soars from the glass with an extraordinary vitality and energy that belies its modest origins. It is drinking perfectly now, so I would merely enjoy it while it is so intense and delicious. There are traces of citrus and apricots in the background with floral notes from the small amount of Sauvignon Blanc grapes included. Made in the foothills of the Pyrenées, the owners only pick the grapes in the early hours of the day to preserve their aromatics. Fabulous." Bruce Palling, The Week

Boina White, Portugal Boutique Winery 2017

A traditional Douro field blend (a co-fermentation of various interplanted white grape varieties) some of which are 90 years old! This has a core of stone fruits and green apple. On the palate there is an almost palomino, pear and white peach fruit profile, but what sets this apart from almost all wines at this price point is the intense minerality rounded off with a buttery finish and hint of toasted hazlenut.

Often I find that all of the wine I buy is to lay down for 10-20 years which is fabulous but what to drink now? Well this wine is definitely the answer to your problem - even if it is a very nice problem to have! Domaine Castera Tauzy 2017

Tantalizing aromas of wet stone after the rain and apricot kernel on the nose, with hints of wild honey and lanolin that give it a real sense of place. As you taste, the textured layers of ripe grapefruit and flinty minerality are elegantly balanced by bracing acidity which gives lift and definition. This is rounded off with a wonderfully long, vibrant finish and that beautiful creamy salted almond flavour which always reminds me of the best Comte. Delicious.

Palpite Branco Reserva, Alentejano 2018

This is very impressive. Very much in the buttery Burgundian mould. Rich but refined white-butter notes on the nose, seamlessly melding into something quite savoury and mealy. A hint of toast. The fruit is rich melon/peach with butterscotch and tropical notes intermingled. In balance though. Very much so. Hedonistic and moreish. Beautiful balance, richness, texture, creaminess, savouriness. This could easily be premier cru Meursault.

A A Badenhorst Family White 2017

Instantly impressive. Immediate sense of powerful mineral core enveloped in citruses, nectarine, apricot and mellow floral notes, with buttercream and elegant whispers of vanilla. Lots packed in there. No overt oak, some vibrant herbaceous hints. Like Condrieu in parts. The palate is creamy and mineral, with suggestions of battonage with some very good lees, and further citrus inflections and fresh, dewy stonefruit. Texturally indulgent yet fresh and mouthwatering. Great for rich foods. The balance is impeccable. Great length. A wine that will age gracefully for a long while.

'Stunning Swaby is all game and no shame, effortlessly fulfilling the checklist of Chardonnay perfection: balance, structure, aromatics, seduction, generosity of spirit. Prettier and tighter than 2016, our 2017 Swaby is that oily spritz from a perfectly ripe tangerine as it pulls away from the tree. You can smell the last hints of springtime citrus blossom and the herbaceous leaf canopy and feel the lightly bitter tang of pith on the tip of your tongue. St Romain Sous Le Chateau Domaine Buisson 2017

Considered the warmest Saint-Romain chardonnay site the Buissons own, Sous le Chateau produces a wine with the richness of Sous la Velle if not the same power and concentration. A nice amount of delicate wood spice. Tasting notes: I’ve heard of this cuvée being compared to Puligny in the past. Creamy white butter and elegant white flower and bright nectarine, white peach, vanilla and citrus on the nose. A plump mid-palate, and perhaps a little mellower than Sous le Velle. A nice amount of delicate wood spice.

Vinicola Carassanese Linea Miru Rosso Piceno 2017

60% Montepulciano, 40% Sangiovese that is soft, juicy and a perfect party wine. Nothing pretentious here, just a really honest little number from the Polini family. I've drunk it 3 times recently and each time I've been amazed by its warmth, charm, ripe fruit and herbs, and can't quite believe what a bargain it is. If only bottles would come around like this more often. We try so many, and know how hard it to source quality at the price when so much is VAT and duty (£4 on at £10 bottle). Supermarket shelves are full of wines that are beefed up with additives to make it seem like they're worth £10 or £12, but often they're hollow. But this really shines. It has real authenticity and effortless Italian flavours. Bravo!

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2017

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

Soli Pinot Noir, Miroglio, Thracian Valley 2017

Stick your nose in this and you get that mouthwatering, autumn leaves, smoky sous bois, minerally pinot perfume, wild strawberry, red cherry, orange rind, sandalwood-clove hints. The palate is mellow and supple, orange-inflected red berry fruit, hint of vanilla wood spice, sweetly suggestive mercurial pinot style all the way, soft tannins and a fine backbone of acidity. Yet again, a really moreish, impressive pinot from Bulgaria. Hats off.

Buitenverwachting Meifort 2017

The 2017 is the purest it's ever tasted. New lead winemaker Brad Paton, has kept out some of the more rustic tannins that could appear in this wine, and just selected better fruit, that might otherwise have gone into the top red, Christine. It is ridiculously good, and although it could do with a bit of time, it will age for 10 years, it is also drinking better than other young Meiforts and can most definitely be enjoyed now. A vineyard owner who sets up a trophy winery in the Helderberg would be happy to slap their top label on this and charge £25, easily.

Corbieres, Chateau de Durfort 2017

The Chateau de Durfort Corbieres vines grow in rocky schist soils in the craggy uplands of Cathar country. The wine has that typical, sumplremely gastronomic combination of ripe, intense spicy fruit flavours, supple, soft, sometimes sweet tannins and a fresh acid core, which makes them irresistible with all the hearty rustic fare of autumn - a rich cassoulet, or meaty slow-cooked ox cheek with garlicky mashed potato - the kind of stuff that makes you feel like Henry VIII.

Most Malbec at this price tastes constructed. Do you know what I mean? When you go to a restaurant and there’s a choice of wines above the house wine that are usually Merlot, Montepulciano, Pinot Noir, Rioja, Malbec, varying from £22 to £32, but they all taste more or less the same, that makes you wish you’d stuck with your aperol spritz.

I've always loved 'Cedro'. But this is a new level. It's made only from Tuscan varieties. You get a lovely aroma of Sangiovese - cherries and ripe fruits, warmth, some herbs and earth. It's wonderful to have this much typicity, but also generosity, without it being in new oak or being overworked. Bourgogne Grande Reserve Pinot Noir Domaine de Mauperthuis 2017

The Grande Reserve vineyard is located on the western side of Chablis, toward Auxerre. The chalky slopes are very similar to the famous Montee de Tonnerre. It is hedonistic with an xxtraordinary nose. Cherry. No filtration in this vintage so good body and chewiness. Good length. Pinot Noir from Burgundy of this quality at this price is so rare. It's joyful and full, and classy, with a lovely hint of oak. It comes from vineyards that were famous in the 19th century that were forgotten and have now been re-planted.

Ar Guentota Malbec, Belasco de Baquedano, Mendoza 2017

We are used to a slightly older version of this Ar Guentota, but this bright and utterly charming vintage has captured our hearts. Loads of blackcurrant, damson and sloes wrap around that vanilla and nutmeg spice. The tannins have a little grip providing texture that helped it match perfectly to the barbecued sirloin we paired it with at the weekend. Blank Bottle Oppie Koppie 80.0000, Swartland 2017

'Shiraz and Cinsault from the Voor-Paardeberg, Swartland and Breedekloof. Back in 2014 I was walking through an organically-farmed Shiraz vineyard in the Voor-Paardeberg. It was close to brunchtime, so I picked a bunch of grapes and stripped the berries off the stem. I was left with a clean stem. I then ate the stem. Pure pepper spice! It immediately triggered an idea: if I ferment the wine without removing the stems (a.k.a. whole bunch fermentation), chances were that I could possibly extract some of that exciting spice. So I chucked 33.33333% of the total volume of grapes into a fermentation vessel (stems and all) and crushed it with my feet. With the balance of the grapes, I removed the stems using a de-stemmer and filled the tank. All the grapes then underwent spontaneous fermentation. After 4 weeks, I pressed the grapes and the wine aged in barrel for a year. When the time came for label design, I did a pencil drawing of an old-fashioned film camera taking a photo of a grape-stem. I blackened the camera lens in such a way that only one third of the stem was exposed to the camera. I then called the wine 33.3333. When it came to the 2017 vintage I decided that, in order for this wine to get to the next level, it needed more complexity. The only way to gain complexity is to add vineyards with flavour profiles that would enhance and add layers to the original wine. A little bit of Shiraz from the Swartland and a tad Cinsaut from the Breedekloof did the trick. Having had 80% whole cluster fermentation, I initially called the wine 80.0000 (referring to the percentage exposure to stems as in previous years), but this was confusing to my clients. I then changed the name to Oppie-Koppie, the name the farmer calls the vineyard - a 2017 Voor-Paardeberg Shiraz (my 4th vintage from this block of grapes). Northern Rhône-like in style, super spicy with nice grip. Ageing will only do this wine great but you can also drink it now.' Pieter Walser

Blank Bottle BIG Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Lovely BIG and smooth. A blend of 6 Cabernet vineyards from 3 different areas, ranging from 116m above sea level to 755m. Related to the Swartland Revolution where Rhone blends were taking over from the Bordeaux blends of Stellenbosch, cabernet suddenly became branded 'uncool.' Wines from each vineyard were vinified separately and bottled under each vineyard name and then the BIG blend was created to show the true character of a South Afircan Cabernet Sauvignon. With stunning black fruit, sweet peppery spice, fine tanning and good acidity, this is a very drinkable wine that shows complexity and liveliness. A wine where each sip stays as interesting as the first. Love this. The fruit from each site was fully destemmed fruit and separately (some of the fruit was still being picked while other batches had longsince been in barrel) went through wild yeast fermentation and ageing in a combination of 225l and 300l used oak barrels for 18 months.

Sons of Eden Kennedy Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvedre Barossa Valley 2017

As my colleague Walsh has noted, you can count on Kennedy. I tasted through a range of Sons of Eden current/new releases recently and this wine stood out. I tasted them without knowing the asking prices and so I was surprised/delighted to find that this was also about the most affordable of them. Some days you have a win. What I like about this is that it’s both robust and svelte. It tastes of blackberry, kirsch, anise and dark leather and at every point along the flow of the palate it feels convincing. A 3ha marl and limestone climat with vines aged 60 on average planted at high density on a broad, west-facing slope up to 390m altitude. Yields of around 40hl/ha. Five days’ cold maceration, gentle pump overs, without much oxygen. Typically, they don’t do much pigeage here (they did not at all in 2018). 20% new oak. Tasting notes: A little more spicy. Hint of toasty reduction. Elegant, incense spice, a hint of peony or rose. Lifted aromas, bright cherry, redcurrant and cassis fruit, showing concentration and finesse – fine and very well defined.
