Chateau Barraillots Margaux 2016

It's not every day that you get your hands on a little spot of Bordeaux royalty and certainly not at £25! Grown in vineyards that were owned by Chateau Palmer (£290 a bottle), just next door to Chateau Margaux (£500 a bottle) this wine has all of the pedigree you could want, but more importantly it tastes delicious!

Chateau Barraillots, Margaux 2014

From a family owned Estate, this has all of the classic notes of Margaux. It's elegant and pretty with high toned floral notes that dance over the top of the main body of dark cherries, spice and tobacco. And at stonkingly good value - what more could you ask for!

Savage Thief In The Night 2018

'The maiden 2017 vintage of this wine was released to rave critical reviews last year despite this cuvee still being a work in progress. The 2018 blend retains a punchy slug of 54% Grenache, a slightly elevated 24% Syrah and a fine supporting 22% Cinsault from the Piekenierskloof. Components were fermented separately unlike 2017, with the grapes spending 10 days on their skins using 20% whole-bunches. After 10 months of ageing in 3,200 litre conical foudre and one new 225 litre barrel, the wine was bottled unfiltered off its fine lees. When I tasted this wine from barrel, I instantly remarked what a step up I thought it was even on the excellent 2017. In bottle, the aromatics display a wonderfully crisp, pure delineated red cherry scented top note with plenty of granitic minerality and graphite in support. Subtle notes of sweet sappy red currant and red plum confit allow the nose to retain an element of broodiness but there is no holding back the palate however, which bristles with delicious vibrancy, wild strawberry, a bright pin point acidity and again an opulent, glycerol weightless intensity and concentration. This really is a genuinely thrilling wine!' (94+/100 Greg Sherwood MW)

Blank Bottle Little William 2018

100% Syrah from a vineyard based 750m above sea level. This wine is so jovial that when tasting blind it would be hard to guess the grape. Light in colour with mouth quenching acidity, this wine clearly demonstrates true terrior. A key theme in most of Pieter's wines. The palate is bright and fresh with red fruit, balanced out with a silky refreshing finish. Drink now-2025

A A Badenhorst Family Red 2016

'The 2016 Family Red Blend is a blend of 71% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 11% Cinsault and 5% Tinta Barocca. It has a very pure bouquet, quite floral and intense, with dark cherries, black plum, warm gravel and light truffle scents, the 80% whole bunch completely disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. There is good backbone here, quite dense but well defined with a chalky, slight austere finish, partly because Adi now undertakes more aging in concrete. Give this a couple of years in bottle.' Very beautiful. Elegant and delicate but so present. This is pretty deep and complex with a structure, that although supple, will keep the wine for many years. A A Badenhorst Family Red 2015

The 2015 represents a milestone for this wine - the 10th vintage Adi has made - and probably the best so far. You can overlook the Family Red in its youth but Adi's Family Red ages really well. It takes time to open up. So decant it and be patient.

Blank Bottle BIG Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Lovely BIG and smooth. A blend of 6 Cabernet vineyards from 3 different areas, ranging from 116m above sea level to 755m. Related to the Swartland Revolution where Rhone blends were taking over from the Bordeaux blends of Stellenbosch, cabernet suddenly became branded 'uncool.' Wines from each vineyard were vinified separately and bottled under each vineyard name and then the BIG blend was created to show the true character of a South Afircan Cabernet Sauvignon. With stunning black fruit, sweet peppery spice, fine tanning and good acidity, this is a very drinkable wine that shows complexity and liveliness. A wine where each sip stays as interesting as the first. Love this. The fruit from each site was fully destemmed fruit and separately (some of the fruit was still being picked while other batches had longsince been in barrel) went through wild yeast fermentation and ageing in a combination of 225l and 300l used oak barrels for 18 months.

Savage Red 2017

"After a bit of vintage shuffling, last year’s 2015 blockbuster was the last Savage Red blend to be bottled, reverting in 2017 to a pure 100% Syrah wine made from vines grown exclusively on granitic soils in both Stellenbosch and the Swartland. Farmed biodynamically, the Stellenbosch vineyard fruit makes up the lion’s share of this wine and indeed will comprise 100% of the Savage Red in 2018.The grapes spend two weeks on their skins with 50% whole-bunches used before spending 13 months in 500 litre barrels and a further 9 months in 3,200 litre conical foudre, or just under two years elevage in the cellar. Loaded with piquant blueberries, saline cassis and blackberry opulence, the nose shows strikingly complex notes of pink musk, sweet grilled herbs, black peppercorn spice and is embellished with an intoxicating exotic sweet white lily blossom fragrance. The palate intensity is also tremendously impressive with a harmonious crystalline purity and classical elegance in abundance. The vintage shows a slightly more overt, opulent personality to the broody foursquare 2015. Drink from release over the next 8 – 10+ years." - Greg Sherwood MW

Keermont Estate Reserve 2014

Really would not be surprised if I was told that this was left bank Bordeaux. Dense blackcurrant, mulberry, plum (though fresh – not over-ripe). Only possible doubt would be owing to the sense of sweetness to the fruit. On the nose, notes of toasty tobacco and graphite, wafts of something herbaceous, hints of undergrowth and the beginnings of a tertiary character. The palate is first savoury, then sweet, silky, plush fruits, dried cranberry and currant, and toast and dried herbs. The savoury-bitter tannins are beginning to melt and feel quite noble, gently materialising over a long, Mahler adagietto-invoking finish. Very impressive, just beginning to show mature notes and a must for lovers of South African claret-style wines.

Maison Blanche Montagne St Emilion 2014

After much research and tasting we’ve found this astonishingly classy Bordeaux from the hills overlooking St Emilion and Pomerol. We love its classical flavour of pencil lead, cedar and black fruits. There is something a bit like a Medoc wine that comes from the Cabernet Franc in the blend with Merlot (like Cheval Blanc) but also undeniably charming and drinkable as St Emilion should be. Being organic makes it even better. It tastes so pure.

St Joseph 'Petit Pere' Aymeric Paillard 2016

The 2016 is really sensational, the nose is amazing, with beautiful dark fruits, some black olives, a touch of herbs and a touch of fine wood. It has a beautiful juice feel and chewy texture and old world flavours. I love this wine. It tastes so real. I could sip it for ever. It also keeps for several days once opened so you can keep coming back to it, which is a sign of a very good wine.

The vineyards are near Tournon, opposite Hermitage. Aymeric Paillard worked at Delas, where he converted their Hermitage vineyard to organic, and did some work for Stephane Ogier, prior to finding a 4 hectare vineyard he farms organically. Concentrated, fresh and mineral, with taut compact fruit. There is super tight blackcurrant, licorice, savoury wood and garrigue notes and a hint of pepper. Beautiful, fine, old school style.

Barolo Renato Corino, La Morra 2016

'The 2016 Barolo del Comune di La Morra is a serious wine that shows just how compelling the vintage is, even among entry-level bottlings. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather and menthol bring out darker shades of Nebbiolo in this rich, textured La Morra Barolo. This is an especially fleshy, rich style, especially among entry-level bottlings. Plush fruit and silky, polished tannins add considerable appeal.' 91 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

St Romain Sous Roche Domaine Buisson 2017

A 3ha marl and limestone climat with vines aged 60 on average planted at high density on a broad, west-facing slope up to 390m altitude. Yields of around 40hl/ha. Five days’ cold maceration, gentle pump overs, without much oxygen. Typically, they don’t do much pigeage here (they did not at all in 2018). 20% new oak. Tasting notes: A little more spicy. Hint of toasty reduction. Elegant, incense spice, a hint of peony or rose. Lifted aromas, bright cherry, redcurrant and cassis fruit, showing concentration and finesse – fine and very well defined. A very faint musk note. Lip-smacking freshness and ‘calcaire de St-Romain’ minerality.

Keermont Pondok Rug Cabernet Franc 2014

From a block planted on Stellenbosch Mountain in 2006, this is a new wine from Keermont. The fact that it’s packaged in a Burgundy bottle gives a clue to the style of the wine: floral and savoury with notes of dried herbs, graphite and a wild unruliness that seems to come with the site.

'The 2017 Sk’Windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca comes from a seven-hectare unpronounceable vineyard whose name means “gusty wind,” planted in 1962, when this Portuguese variety was becoming increasingly popular in the Capelands. It has a very pure blackberry and briar bouquet with hints of pressed iris and later, just a hint of canned prune. The palate is medium-bodied with black plum, blackberry and light white pepper notes, intriguingly almost Barolo-like in tannic structure, with gentle grip on the finish. Touriga Vai Nua Fitapreta 2018 MAGNUM

We’re reliably informed by winemaker Antonio Macanita that ‘Vai Nua’ means ‘goes naked’ in Portuguese. This should not be taken as an instruction to spice up your dinner party (“For some reason no one even touched the main course...”), but rather as an indicator that this is one of the brightest, most quaffable Portuguese reds ever likely to pass your lips. Touriga is known for producing big wines with lots of alcohol and tannin. Here it’s unoaked and as delicate as the dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, showing off the variety’s floral and hedgerow fruit notes.

Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2018

A wine with a more than unique history and story. The small village of Tesselaarsdal in the Overberg, 24km North East of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is named for East India Company settler Johannes Tesselar. On his death in 1810, he bestowed the land to his freed slaves and owner/winemaker Berene herself is a descendant on one of those very slaves. If you look closely at the label, you can make out 2 people walking across the mountain. This is Berene and her Grandmother.

Indaco, Tenuta Sette Cieli, Tuscany 2014

This is becoming not just a top Tuscan wine but an Italian first growth, but still really is a wine for those in the know. A Bordeaux blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The pedigree is there in the vineyard. From the next hillside over, you can see Sassicaia’s legendary first vineyard, and Ornellaia, where they make Massetto. Tenuta Sette Cieli also sits above the famous vineyard Ca’Marcanda of Angelo Gaja!. But the best thing is the price remains sane as it’s not actually in the Bolgheri appellation, as no one thought when they drew the Bolgheri boundary that someone would be crazy enough plant above the woods, that are above Gaja’s vineyard. But they have!

‘A well-known and consistent wine from the estate of Christian Dauriac, this big, plump, opulent 2005 is one of the best wines I have ever tasted from this estate. Ombrone Cupano 2016

From the outstanding 2016 vintage; this is a Super-Tuscan, made from Cabernet and Merlot. You're getting a sort of Tuscan Pomerol, or St Emilion, but it ages with the grace of the Brunello. It’s the first vintage that has had a small amount of Cabernet Franc added, for a bit of aromatic complexity, freshness and roundness. I suspect Lionel planted Cabernet Franc after his friend, the winemaker from the great Chateau Cheval Blanc, visited. It’s a very accomplished wine, and really superb price for a wine of this quality. This vintage is special, and as usual, the wine will give huge pleasure soon after arriving. For people who have never known great wine, this is the bottle to convince them that there is such a thing, and that there is value in spending up, without spending a fortune.

Chateau Gombaude-Guillot Pomerol 2011

This wine costs quite a lot less the second wine of Vieux Chateau Certan, and it’s definitely a lot more delicious. And don’t even mention the cost of the first wines. Standing here you are just surrounded by the biggest names – Vieux Chateau Certan, Trotanoy, La Fleur, Clinet, Petrus. It’s really quite surreal. It doesn’t pretend to be a Petrus, or L’Eglise Clinet, but for this I like it all the more. And in a way, without all the polish and new oak of some of the buffed up wines of this most sought after appellation in the world, it is a truer reflection of the terroir. The soil is the same as for the other most famous producers in Pomerol - flint and gravel, with fine decomposed clay, on clay, with iron deposits (rich in orange crystals typical in Pomerol).
