A super nose, full of lovely Syrah aromas, black currant, violet, licorice, a bit of pepper and spice with a good hearty juiciness. This is not a pricy Northern Rhone equivalent but it is the best £10 Syrah from the Languedoc we’ve had for many years.

Syrah Laurence de Veyrac 2019

There are of course occasions when one desires a wine with bells and whistles, fancy wax tops and temperature-responsive labels, 283 days of skin maceration and grape varieties that are utterly unpronounceable, even when sober. Then there are other occasions when one just wants a really nice syrah – not a syrah to serve at a banquet for the queen or to lay down in a cellar till kingdom come, just a lovely, ready-to-drink, does-what-it-says-on-the-tin syrah which makes you think ‘ooh, that’s a nice syrah’, with every sip. Well, fortunately, our Laurence de Veyrac Syrah from the Languedoc serves that purpose unimprovably well. It smells of syrah, it tastes of syrah – it’s full of black currant, violet, licorice, and peppery spice, and deliciously juicy with it. It’s not Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage but neither does it want to be (actually, it does remind us a bit of the Northern Rhone). It wants to give you simple, uncomplicated pleasure at a price (under a tenner!) that’s every bit as delicious as the wine itself. And there’s nothing wrong – in fact, there’s everything right - with that.

Pinot Noir Jean des Valanges 2018

You just don't expect to get interesting, tasty Pinot Noir aromas and flavours at this price. Rich raspberry and black cherry, dark fruit for Pinot Noir. It's generous and deep with a seductive smokey edge and soupcon of spice. The palate is juicy and fairly full for a Pinot Nior. Effortlessly smooth tannins and a refreshingly low abv make this perfect for long summer evenings in the garden or socially distanced drinks with the neighbours over the front fence.

Vinicola Carassanese Linea Miru Rosso Piceno 2017

60% Montepulciano, 40% Sangiovese that is soft, juicy and a perfect party wine. Nothing pretentious here, just a really honest little number from the Polini family. I've drunk it 3 times recently and each time I've been amazed by its warmth, charm, ripe fruit and herbs, and can't quite believe what a bargain it is. If only bottles would come around like this more often. We try so many, and know how hard it to source quality at the price when so much is VAT and duty (£4 on at £10 bottle). Supermarket shelves are full of wines that are beefed up with additives to make it seem like they're worth £10 or £12, but often they're hollow. But this really shines. It has real authenticity and effortless Italian flavours. Bravo!

Barbera Bonelli 2019

It's always fun to match the wine to the food of the region the wine is from. In the case of our Bonelli Barbera, you're spoiled for choice. A classic tagliatelle Bolognese would fit the bill very nicely. Or, if you can find a good Italian deli try gramigna (a pasta like an elongated macaroni, unique to Bologna) with a simple sausage, white wine and tomato sauce, sprinkled with blizzard of mature Parmesan.

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2017

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

Soli Pinot Noir, Miroglio, Thracian Valley 2017

Stick your nose in this and you get that mouthwatering, autumn leaves, smoky sous bois, minerally pinot perfume, wild strawberry, red cherry, orange rind, sandalwood-clove hints. The palate is mellow and supple, orange-inflected red berry fruit, hint of vanilla wood spice, sweetly suggestive mercurial pinot style all the way, soft tannins and a fine backbone of acidity. Yet again, a really moreish, impressive pinot from Bulgaria. Hats off.

Buitenverwachting Meifort 2017

The 2017 is the purest it's ever tasted. New lead winemaker Brad Paton, has kept out some of the more rustic tannins that could appear in this wine, and just selected better fruit, that might otherwise have gone into the top red, Christine. It is ridiculously good, and although it could do with a bit of time, it will age for 10 years, it is also drinking better than other young Meiforts and can most definitely be enjoyed now. A vineyard owner who sets up a trophy winery in the Helderberg would be happy to slap their top label on this and charge £25, easily.

Rhône meet the Languedoc in this ethereally lovely red blend, Robin’s de facto house red. Think along the lines of a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape with a soupcon more freshness – a factor of Mas Brunet’s location in windswept limestone plateau of the Terrasses de Larzac.

Nebbiolo, Elvio Tintero 2018

I wouldn't bat an eyelid if you told me this was a Barolo or Barbaresco at over £20. Gentle fragrant rose, quite pale in colour, a hint of strawberry, fired brick and earth flavours. The best producers are those that handle the grapes gently, which in turn expresses the magic of the terroir and shows Nebbiolo at its almost Pinot Noir - like best. The colour is quite pale, like many Barolo and Barbaresco. The aroma is wonderful with brick, earth, stone, cherry, verging towards a Pinot Noir style, with hints of rose and strawberry but distinctly Italian, nice fresh fruit, floral with fine spices and good grip on the finish, but supple. This is not a big wine, but it's an excellent wine.

Corbieres, Chateau de Durfort 2017

The Chateau de Durfort Corbieres vines grow in rocky schist soils in the craggy uplands of Cathar country. The wine has that typical, sumplremely gastronomic combination of ripe, intense spicy fruit flavours, supple, soft, sometimes sweet tannins and a fresh acid core, which makes them irresistible with all the hearty rustic fare of autumn - a rich cassoulet, or meaty slow-cooked ox cheek with garlicky mashed potato - the kind of stuff that makes you feel like Henry VIII.

Most Malbec at this price tastes constructed. Do you know what I mean? When you go to a restaurant and there’s a choice of wines above the house wine that are usually Merlot, Montepulciano, Pinot Noir, Rioja, Malbec, varying from £22 to £32, but they all taste more or less the same, that makes you wish you’d stuck with your aperol spritz.

Touriga Vai Nua Fitapreta 2019

We are very sorry, but we have temporarily sold out of this wine. More stock is on it's way and is available for pre-order for delivery in early July. Made from mature (average 30 years old) vines on rocky schist soil at 300-400m above sea level in Alentejo. Most of the wine has 30 days on skins with wild yeast fermentation. A portion undergoes semi-carbonic maceration. The wine is aged for three months in steel tank - no oak at all - then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Such impressive freshness and floral aromatics. Bruised herbs, blueberry bubblegum, cherry, bergamot and sweet candied liquorice. As dewy-fresh a wine as you’ll find anywhere. Crisp, juicy, aromatic and perfectly formed. Compelling notes of bergamot citrus. A juicy, full palate with plenty of acidity and grippy yet fine tannin. Youthful and sweet-fruited with lovely lightness of touch.

Llama Malbec, Belasco de Baquedano, Mendoza 2018

As you’d expect from a producer that used the late winemaker of Mouton-Rothschild, Bertrand Bourdil, in its early years, this Malbec is markedly different. It has lovely pure fruit, and a juice that floats on the palate. It's more elegant that most Malbec, and not quite as rich, with flavours of plum and cherry, and a tiny lick of fine oak, with even a hint of Bordeaux about it. The comes from the freshness from the exceptionally high altitude - 3330 feet - where the nights can be 45F less than the day. It’s exceptionally gluggable but fine at the same time.

Chianti Rufina 'Cedro' Lavacchio 2018 (Organic)

I've always loved 'Cedro'. But this is a new level. It's made only from Tuscan varieties. You get a lovely aroma of Sangiovese - cherries and ripe fruits, warmth, some herbs and earth. It's wonderful to have this much typicity, but also generosity, without it being in new oak or being overworked. It's such a pleasure when you raise a glass of wine to your nose and it fills you with good aromas and a sense of joy. It really does. I'm very impressed. Bravo!

Medium-deep ruby colour, showing a hint of maturity at the rim (i.e. it's not a young, purple wine). It has a warm and inviting nose of creamy black cherries and coconut macaroon - an effect of the American oak, which gives away its telltale Rioja origins. The palate is where the fun really begins. It's as smooth as David Niven in a velvet smoking jacket, with plush, ripe, puréed berry fruits combined with pashmina-soft tannins. Domaine Grand Ormeau, Lalande de Pomerol 2016

When it comes to Bordeaux finding quality at a decent price has been getting ever harder to attain. Like a lot of wine lovers, I’ve more or less turned my back. There are marvellous Bordeaux-style wines being made all over the world after all. Very occasionally though, there are glimmers of light in this money-benighted region, clarets that tickle you in all the appropriate places but that don't come with a bullying price tag. One such wine is Domaine du Grand Ormeau’s Lalande-de-Pomerol, whose vineyards are on excellent stony terroir, next-door to Pomerol (and indeed a short hop from the deified Petrus), Domaine Grand Ormeau is producing excellent wines without the silly price tags of their over-inflated neighbours.

Full Moon Grenache 2018

'These wines are inspired by the light yet complex and textured wines grown on volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. Since there’s no Nerello Cuppucio or Mascalese here in SA, Grenache is the next best thing and it works a charm. The grapes are from a farm of old bush vines outside Darling and were picked on 13 February: early enough to ensure a good, fresh tannin – but not quite as aggresive as the 2016 vintage(!). Grapes were handpicked, footstomped and fermented naturally. A gentle basket-press and then the wine left in a single old 500L barrel for a whole year. Minimal sulphur added before bottling, this is a lean, mean Grenache machine that is drinking superbly already. Whoop! 600 bottles made.' David Cope, Winemaker
