Alceo Familia Bastida 2017

Spain is undoubtedly the home of great tasting, tongue pleasing red wines and this tempranillo is no exception. Packed full of bramble fruits with a lick of custard and crumble vanilla it’s as delicious as it is great value. Tuck in now and enjoy a bottle immediately!

Vinicola Carassanese Linea Miru Rosso Piceno 2017

60% Montepulciano, 40% Sangiovese that is soft, juicy and a perfect party wine. Nothing pretentious here, just a really honest little number from the Polini family. I've drunk it 3 times recently and each time I've been amazed by its warmth, charm, ripe fruit and herbs, and can't quite believe what a bargain it is. If only bottles would come around like this more often. We try so many, and know how hard it to source quality at the price when so much is VAT and duty (£4 on at £10 bottle). Supermarket shelves are full of wines that are beefed up with additives to make it seem like they're worth £10 or £12, but often they're hollow. But this really shines. It has real authenticity and effortless Italian flavours. Bravo!

St Ilia Merlot, Miroglio,Thracian Valley 2017

Based in the Thracian Valley but with Piedmontese ownership and winemaking expertise, Edouardo Miroglio makes lifetime converts of anyone willing to take a chance on Eastern European wines. This merlot is a big fat cuddle of a wine: ultra-mellow and velvety with smoky black cherry and ripe plum fruit that's so lush and smooth it almost demands the warm, dulcet tones of Nat King Cole.

Barbera Bonelli 2018

‘Cheap’ is not a word you often hear from wine merchants. Not publicly anyway. But ‘cheap’ doesn’t always have to be followed by ‘nasty’. It might also be followed by ‘cheerful’. ‘Cheap and nasty’ is a bumper roll of Poundland binbags. ‘Cheap and cheerful' is this fiendishly swiggable, bright, refreshingly fruity Barbera.

Soli Pinot Noir, Miroglio, Thracian Valley 2016

Pound for pound this is probably our most rewarding vinous discovery to date - who would have guessed that a Pinot from Bulgaria could trump a decent Chambolle-Musigny or Morey-Saint-Denis while costing a fraction of the price? - the Soli has charmed everyone who has had the good fortune to taste it, Swiggers, sommeliers and wine scribes alike. It remains, in its 2016 incarnation, one of the softest, prettiest Pinot Noirs ever to grace our portfolio. And the price, compared with other wines of this quality, still beggars belief.

Soli Pinot Noir, Miroglio, Thracian Valley 2017

Stick your nose in this and you get that mouthwatering, autumn leaves, smoky sous bois, minerally pinot perfume, wild strawberry, red cherry, orange rind, sandalwood-clove hints. The palate is mellow and supple, orange-inflected red berry fruit, hint of vanilla wood spice, sweetly suggestive mercurial pinot style all the way, soft tannins and a fine backbone of acidity. Yet again, a really moreish, impressive pinot from Bulgaria. Hats off.

Autocarro No 27 2017

A deliciously decadent coffee rich, dark red fruit studded nose that lures you in with this incredible touch of umami. The palate has all of those sweet and dark notes. Rich black plum and sloes are washed with coffee and chocolate and that same umami running through the palate. This is crying out for rich fennel studded charcuterie or a huge hunk of grilled meat.

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2017

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

Mas Brunet Cuvee du Mazet, Domaine de Brunet 2016

Rhône meet the Languedoc in this ethereally lovely red blend, Robin’s de facto house red. Think along the lines of a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape with a soupcon more freshness – a factor of Mas Brunet’s location in windswept limestone plateau of the Terrasses de Larzac. A Swig classic – leave a glass of Cuvée de Mazet out for Santa on Christmas Eve and you’re assured of a bulging stocking on Christmas morn.

Titos Garnacha, Familia Bastida 2016

Ripe, fleshy blueberry and plum fruit. Tastes stately, with finesse, and lovely oak but definitely not too much. This is a wine with an impressive structure where spiced dark fruit is held together by a balanced acidity. Full-bodied with soft sweet tannins and a long finish. The sensation is one of a full-bodied, smooth wine but with really good flavour.

A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Did you know that the collective noun for a group of parrots is a ‘pandemonium of parrots’? Worthy of inclusion as a Christmas cracker factlet, that one. Enjoy your own pandemonium of parrots by investing a case or two of Adi Badenhorst’s Papegaai (Afrikaans for ‘parrot’) Cinsault. The 2017 red uses the same high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines as the first vintage, but this one has a slightly deeper fruit profile thanks to a small proportion of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi, Eben Sadie and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. Joyous juice with more than a hint of Swartland swagger.

Chateau Gelineau, Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2016

To find a classy Bordeaux that has hints of all the things we like – sweet berries, cedar and spicy oak, with good body and concentration - at this price is rare. As rare as a sighting of a sleigh-riding Santa in the sky. Though not quite so sibiliant. Note that this super-grand Grande Vin comes from the excellent 2015 vintage, which in this case has helped to propel a comparatively modest claret into the realm of Cru Classé. Drink with: rosbif!

L'Appel des Sereines Syrah, Francois Villard, N Rhone 2016

'I’ll never forget visiting this chap for the first time back in the early nineties. I nicknamed Villard and his two neighbours, Gaillard and Cuilleron, the Three Musketeers in my notes. They were young, outspoken, daring and made expressive, honest wines. Fastforward 25 years and they’re still heroes in the Northern Rhône, but only one makes a budget Syrah like this one. This is, hands down, one of the most fragrant, juicy and bargain-priced Syrahs on earth. I adore the iodine-tinged nose and blackberry palate – it is the definition of this grape and I heartily commend it to you.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

Most Malbec at this price tastes constructed. Do you know what I mean? Monica, Alberto Loi, Sardinia 2017

The Nibaru is packed full of this rich, soft, heady Mediterranean fruit with dried herb and floral notes. There is some heft to this wine but it's still fresh and lifted and, with a meal, slides down like a salmon swimming downstream. Go wild with the foods of the Island, juicy, flavoursome tomatoes, used generously in sauces, artichokes, fava beans, peas, aubergine, courgettes. If you can manage to get your hands on some of this simple tasty stuff from your local posh deli, you don't have to do very much to them before you have Pure Gastronomic Harmony. If you are planning something a little more ambitious - roast hare, boar or game birds, say, flavoured with Sardinia-inspired herbiage like wild fennel, juniper and myrtle, the Nibaru Monica will also work to transportingly lovely effect.

EM Heritage Pinot Noir Edoardo Miroglio 2016

So elegant, pretty and silky, this Pinot could run a class at Debrett's in charm and etiquette. Cherries and a hint of forest floor. No rustic notes here! Mas Brunet Cuvee Tradition, Domaine de Brunet 2016

This vintage excites me as much as the first one we had. It is absolutely beautiful with ethereal, almost Pinot Noir aromas of wild strawberries, and then you catch the Syrah notes of violet flowers, with a hint of garrigue herbs. It's so graceful. As it opens up over a few hours, and days the wine seems to get deeper and more intense, and even more beautiful. If made in the New World, or in a classical region of France would easily be £25 or over. It will also age quite a few years, getting better, which is rare at this price. Beautiful with fish, as well as saucisson, pate and terrines, wild mushrooms on toast, as well as with light game, chicken, lamb and beef. Although it's so supple, I'd aim decant it, to get as much expression from it as possible.

Terre de San Leonardo, Trentino, Italy 2015

A blend of Carmenere, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon / 13% alc This is harmonious, restrained and very well balanced. It is classically styled - Bordeaux / Margaux type of finesse, with gentle berry and savoury notes with a light hint of oak. Touriga Vai Nua Fitapreta 2018

We’re reliably informed by winemaker Antonio Macanita that ‘Vai Nua’ means ‘goes naked’ in Portuguese. This should not be taken as an instruction to spice up your dinner party (“For some reason no one even touched the main course...”), but rather as an indicator that this is one of the brightest, most quaffable Portuguese reds ever likely to pass your lips. Touriga is known for producing big wines with lots of alcohol and tannin. Here it’s unoaked and as delicate as the dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, showing off the variety’s floral and hedgerow fruit notes.

Chianti Rufina 'Cedro' Lavacchio 2017 (Organic)

I've always loved 'Cedro'. But this is a new level. It's made only from Tuscan varieties. You get a lovely aroma of Sangiovese - cherries and ripe fruits, warmth, some herbs and earth. It's wonderful to have this much typicity, but also generosity, without it being in new oak or being overworked. It's such a pleasure when you raise a glass of wine to your nose and it fills you with good aromas and a sense of joy. It really does. I'm very impressed. Bravo!

Buro Vendimia Seleccionada, Bodegas Pascual, Ribera del Duero 2016

The 2016 is a reminder of how great this wine really is with an incredible complexity and finesse coming from the 50 year old vines. Intense cherry red, with bright blackberries and plums develop into a dark and brooding concoction with hints of spice, tobacco and toffee. Domaine Grand Ormeau, Lalande de Pomerol 2014

Lovely ripe plum and blackcurrant with cocoa dust, tobacco leaf, a touch of sandlewood. Very appealing. The palate is a fantastic contrast of those bright plum and currant fruits wrapped in dark secondaries – cigar box, dark chocolate and a bit of pipe tobacco. A producer just over the border from Pomerol, making wine, now with the help of the former winemaker of Petrus, Yannick Reyrel. Smooth for Bordeaux. I can see that you had the 2010 from us a few years ago. It has a lush Pinot character - effortless smoky summer fruits and gamey, orangepeel and sandalwood notes – with the beautiful balance and opulent texture this wine offers, frankly, it's a steal. 2016 was a warm year in Baden producing beautifully ripe fruit. This has translated to a an entry-level wine that is open and generous but easily capable of ageing too. Johannes told us he recently opened a bottle from 2008 that was drinking perfectly. This really is freakishly good-value!

There's no doubt that the market is overcrowded with New Zealand Pinot, so much so that we've started to get Pinot fatigue aka Fatnot - okay we'll work on that one! That was until we tasted the phenomenal Pinot from our favourite Sauvignon producer. This lures you in with it's pretty pastel floral wafts and then plunges you into a meatier, smokey and red fruit dominated pallat. Domaine Grand Ormeau, Lalande de Pomerol 2016

When it comes to Bordeaux finding quality at a decent price has been getting ever harder to attain. Like a lot of wine lovers, I’ve more or less turned my back. There are marvellous Bordeaux-style wines being made all over the world after all. Very occasionally though, there are glimmers of light in this money-benighted region, clarets that tickle you in all the appropriate places but that don't come with a bullying price tag. One such wine is Domaine du Grand Ormeau’s Lalande-de-Pomerol, whose vineyards are on excellent stony terroir, next-door to Pomerol (and indeed a short hop from the deified Petrus), Domaine Grand Ormeau is producing excellent wines without the silly price tags of their over-inflated neighbours.

Full Moon Grenache 2018

'These wines are inspired by the light yet complex and textured wines grown on volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. Since there’s no Nerello Cuppucio or Mascalese here in SA, Grenache is the next best thing and it works a charm. The grapes are from a farm of old bush vines outside Darling and were picked on 13 February: early enough to ensure a good, fresh tannin – but not quite as aggresive as the 2016 vintage(!). Grapes were handpicked, footstomped and fermented naturally. A gentle basket-press and then the wine left in a single old 500L barrel for a whole year. Minimal sulphur added before bottling, this is a lean, mean Grenache machine that is drinking superbly already. Whoop! 600 bottles made.' David Cope, Winemaker

This is really, really good. Beautifully crafted; we were blown away by the lightness of touch and incredible balance that keeps the big fruit flavours of this wine in check giving a full-bodied wine that feels like it could do a pirouhette. Rich in body, smooth in texture, with concentrated, oak-spiced dark fruits on the nose and palate and subtle herbal and floral (violets) notes. Ripe and powerful but well-rounded and supple. The cab gives it some freshness in the mid-palate, but you can still get a sense of the other two varieties - the herbal, liquorice notes of the Touriga, the inky depth and spiciness of the Aragonez.
