Chateau Gelineau, Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2016

To find a classy Bordeaux that has hints of all the things we like – sweet berries, cedar and spicy oak, with good body and concentration - at this price is rare. Note that this super-grand Grande Vin comes from the excellent 2016 vintage, which in this case has helped to propel a comparatively modest claret into the realm of Cru Classé. Drink with: rosbif!

Domaine Grand Ormeau, Lalande de Pomerol 2016

When it comes to Bordeaux finding quality at a decent price has been getting ever harder to attain. Like a lot of wine lovers, I’ve more or less turned my back. There are marvellous Bordeaux-style wines being made all over the world after all. Very occasionally though, there are glimmers of light in this money-benighted region, clarets that tickle you in all the appropriate places but that don't come with a bullying price tag. One such wine is Domaine du Grand Ormeau’s Lalande-de-Pomerol, whose vineyards are on excellent stony terroir, next-door to Pomerol (and indeed a short hop from the deified Petrus), Domaine Grand Ormeau is producing excellent wines without the silly price tags of their over-inflated neighbours.

Chateau Barraillots Margaux 2016

It's not every day that you get your hands on a little spot of Bordeaux royalty and certainly not at £25! Grown in vineyards that were owned by Chateau Palmer (£290 a bottle), just next door to Chateau Margaux (£500 a bottle) this wine has all of the pedigree you could want, but more importantly it tastes delicious!

Chateau Barraillots, Margaux 2014

From a family owned Estate, this has all of the classic notes of Margaux. It's elegant and pretty with high toned floral notes that dance over the top of the main body of dark cherries, spice and tobacco. And at stonkingly good value - what more could you ask for!

Maison Blanche Montagne St Emilion 2014

After much research and tasting we’ve found this astonishingly classy Bordeaux from the hills overlooking St Emilion and Pomerol. We love its classical flavour of pencil lead, cedar and black fruits. There is something a bit like a Medoc wine that comes from the Cabernet Franc in the blend with Merlot (like Cheval Blanc) but also undeniably charming and drinkable as St Emilion should be. Being organic makes it even better. It tastes so pure.

Chateau Marquis de Terme, Margaux 2010

"This is alluring, with the sappy feel of the kirsch, dark plum and loganberry fruit melded nicely to a charcoal spine. The long, smoldering finish reveals a singed iron note and features good grip. Should evolve nicely. Best from 2015 through 2030." Wine Spectator

Chateau Gombaude-Guillot Pomerol 2011

This wine costs quite a lot less the second wine of Vieux Chateau Certan, and it’s definitely a lot more delicious. And don’t even mention the cost of the first wines. Standing here you are just surrounded by the biggest names – Vieux Chateau Certan, Trotanoy, La Fleur, Clinet, Petrus. It’s really quite surreal. It doesn’t pretend to be a Petrus, or L’Eglise Clinet, but for this I like it all the more. And in a way, without all the polish and new oak of some of the buffed up wines of this most sought after appellation in the world, it is a truer reflection of the terroir. The soil is the same as for the other most famous producers in Pomerol - flint and gravel, with fine decomposed clay, on clay, with iron deposits (rich in orange crystals typical in Pomerol).
