A A Badenhorst Piet Bok se Bos Chenin Blanc 2017

'The 2017 Piet Bok Se Bos Steen, which is named after the original farmer of Adi's estate, comes from vines planted in 1968. This is the first time it has not been blended into the Secateurs Chenin Blanc. It has a well-defined bouquet of yellow plum, white flower and light wax resin aromas that unfold beautifully in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a pithy core of yellow stone fruit, a fine bead of acidity and a waxy-textured, quite persistent finish. Superb.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100

A A Badenhorst Family Red 2016

'The 2016 Family Red Blend is a blend of 71% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 11% Cinsault and 5% Tinta Barocca. It has a very pure bouquet, quite floral and intense, with dark cherries, black plum, warm gravel and light truffle scents, the 80% whole bunch completely disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. There is good backbone here, quite dense but well defined with a chalky, slight austere finish, partly because Adi now undertakes more aging in concrete. Give this a couple of years in bottle.' St Joseph 'Petit Pere' Aymeric Paillard 2015

The vineyards are near Tournon, opposite Hermitage. Aymeric Paillard worked at Delas, where he converted their Hermitage vineyard to organic, and did some work for Stephane Ogier, prior to finding a 4 hectare vineyard he farms organically. Concentrated, fresh and mineral, with taut compact fruit. There is super tight blackcurrant, licorice, savoury wood and garrigue notes and a hint of pepper. Beautiful, fine, old school style.

A A Badenhorst Sk'windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca 2017

'The 2017 Sk’Windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca comes from a seven-hectare unpronounceable vineyard whose name means “gusty wind,” planted in 1962, when this Portuguese variety was becoming increasingly popular in the Capelands. It has a very pure blackberry and briar bouquet with hints of pressed iris and later, just a hint of canned prune. The palate is medium-bodied with black plum, blackberry and light white pepper notes, intriguingly almost Barolo-like in tannic structure, with gentle grip on the finish. 'The 2017 Ramnasgras Cinsault comes from vines planted in 1964, the most productive vineyard yet still producing just 3,500 bottles. It includes some 60% whole-bunch fruit and was matured in 4,000-liter foudres. The winsome bouquet features red currant, cranberry and wild rose petal scents, very well defined and pure - oddly enough, almost Burgundy-like in style. The palate is well balanced with fresh red cherry and cranberry fruit and hints of pomegranate, quite mineral-driven and again, very Burgundy-like on the poised finish. Indaco, Tenuta Sette Cieli, Tuscany 2014

This is becoming not just a top Tuscan wine but an Italian first growth, but still really is a wine for those in the know. A Bordeaux blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The pedigree is there in the vineyard. From the next hillside over, you can see Sassicaia’s legendary first vineyard, and Ornellaia, where they make Massetto. Tenuta Sette Cieli also sits above the famous vineyard Ca’Marcanda of Angelo Gaja!. But the best thing is the price remains sane as it’s not actually in the Bolgheri appellation, as no one thought when they drew the Bolgheri boundary that someone would be crazy enough plant above the woods, that are above Gaja’s vineyard. But they have!

Ombrone Cupano 2016

From the outstanding 2016 vintage; this is a Super-Tuscan, made from Cabernet and Merlot. You're getting a sort of Tuscan Pomerol, or St Emilion, but it ages with the grace of the Brunello. It’s the first vintage that has had a small amount of Cabernet Franc added, for a bit of aromatic complexity, freshness and roundness. I suspect Lionel planted Cabernet Franc after his friend, the winemaker from the great Chateau Cheval Blanc, visited. It’s a very accomplished wine, and really superb price for a wine of this quality. This vintage is special, and as usual, the wine will give huge pleasure soon after arriving. For people who have never known great wine, this is the bottle to convince them that there is such a thing, and that there is value in spending up, without spending a fortune.

Italy's finest expression of Syrah. This is gorgeous, classy, old-school in some ways - so that if you like Bordeaux, Rhone and Burgundy, you would enjoy this, yet it expresses the joy of Sicily. The terroir is in Melilli, an extinct volcano - south of Etna - with limestone, marine fossils. Made by wine legend Peter Vinding-Diers.

Barbaresco Gaja Sorì Tìldìn 2016

'The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a fabulous, incredibly complete wine that soars out of the glass with explosive structure and vertical lift. The tannins are very much present, but also matched beautifully by the wine's aromatic intensity and overall drive. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, plum and mocha add darker shades of nuance. In 2016, Sorì Tildìn is a bit more brooding and bigger than it often is, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. It is quite simply a majestic wine of real grandeur and total class, but it is not obvious. Sorì Tildìn will appeal most to readers who understand what the truest essence of Nebbiolo is all about. La Bota Oloroso # 78, Equipo Navazos (37.5cl)

The selected cask for this wine belongs to a solera of 12 butts known as Vintage 1809, which has not been in the market for many decades. Documents from the last years of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century mention this Oloroso as one of the oldest and best (and, therefore, expensive) wines of the house. It had a place of priviledge together with other legendary wines, as well as with the “younger” (but now disappeared) Vintage 1820 and Vintage 1840. La Bota de Oloroso 78 “Bota NO” is a wonderfully aged and concentrated wine, but still fine and very dry. A true meditation draught.
