A A Badenhorst Papegaai White Blend 2018

80% Chenin with a splash each of Palomino, Roussane, Verdelho and Grenache Blanc. You simply don't get more personality in a wine for this price. We absolutely love it. You can have the most expensive winemaking equipment in the world, but to what end if the final result is neutral and dull? This is no-frills winemaking at its best, and the end result blows other wines in the same price category out of the water! On the nose it has ripe stone fruits, which follows through to the palate, with a light citrus zing, plenty of texture and a mineral verve that takes it to a long finish.

Alphabetical White Vin Blanc 2018

Another Saffer wine that sits firmly in, if not at the very summit of, the unbeatable-value midweek bottle category. If you are in one of those households where someone likes Sauvignon but someone else has gone off it, and you can't agree on what to drink, then try this. It’s a quite blindingly good wine for the price and is made from the rich, Rhone white variety Roussanne. A bona fide charmer that will add a lovely bit of character to your lunch or dinner - a scent of stone fruits here, a soupcon of mountain herbs there, and just the right amount of fruit character to complement a mahoosive variety of foods.

AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2019

Apricots cascade off the palate into a heady blend of fresh pineapple chunks, stone fruits and dried mango with a hint of fresh almond. All that sweet tropical fruit is kept in check by a leesy, honey dew melon palate, dried mango, with a vibrant, almost peppery finish.

Blank Bottle Offspring 2017

Darling Chenin blanc and Elgin Sémillon. 'Come November each year, my mind is mostly made up about which components in the cellar is destined for which wines - a thought (and tasting) process that takes months to complete. I know it’s hard to empathise with my situation, but the fact that we pick grapes from roughly 60 different vineyards all over the Western Cape really doesn’t make this an easy process. When the grapes come into the winery, each vineyard is made and kept separate in the winery - all unique in character - and then within each batch, every barrel has its very own personality. So the first step is to decide which components we don’t like. These we pump into a tank and sell off as bulk wine. We then set the single vineyard/varietal-specific wines aside. After this, we get to work on the blends. We taste in the mornings, we taste at night. We taste at full-moon and at new moon. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, less of this, more of that…In the end we bottle up to 17 different white wines in one year. When this process is complete, we always have components left. Components that have unique characteristics, but due to a clash in personalities did not make it into a blend. We then make up one last white blend of that year’s vintage: the offspring of the winery for the year. Like our kids, each offspring contributes in its own way to the family - a blend made up with no preconceived ideas or goals in mind.' Pieter Walser Winemaker

Blank Bottle Moment of Silence, Wellington 2018

We like what you are doing to us, BB M of S 2018. We like it a lot. On the nose you're spoiling us, ambassador, with your mellifluous aromas of guava, pineapple, honeyed peach and your cultured hints of fynbos. The way in which you meld these seamlessly with the faintest notes of classy old wood makes us smile both inwardly and outwardly, and wish to make the world a better place. Your lovely generous texture, which suggests full-ness without appearing 'big' or boozy, makes us want to go skipping over a mountain glade flying a big, brightly coloured kite, while the gentle viognier efflorescences of your dewy fresh personality has us practicing iambic pentameter so we might pen doating sonnets to your unutterable perfection.

Keermont Terrasse White 2016

You’ve heard of the Miracle on 34th Street but what about the Miracle of Paradyskloof? That Keermont winemaker Alex Starey managed to produce a Terrasse White from the notoriously drought-plagued 2016 vintage and score 93 points from two top critics surely has to count as some kind of supernatural occurrence. This old-vine chenin-based blend is a nailed-on deliverer of joy.

Blank Bottle Rabbitsfoot, Stellenbosch 2018

It reminds me of a bit of Semillon on the nose, but it’s quite plump on the palate, although nicely taut. It’s aromatic, slightly grassy. Softer and more texture on the palate than Semillon. A bit of quince on the aroma, and paw paw, almost mango on the palate, and even white peach. Robin Davis

Blank Bottle Kortpad Kaaptoe, Swartland 2018

Kortpad Kaaptoe means quickest route in Afrikaans. This wine is named for just that, following on from an occasion when Pieter had to get back to Cape Town in a great hurry. He was told to drive past the Carignan and Shiraz vines, and then turn left after the Fernao Pires. Pieter, firstly astounded not to have heard of this grape, and then having to drive past said weird vines that he couldn't stop at was determined to go back to visit this old vineyard in the Swartland. The wine is therefore named for the shortcut he took back to Cape, that occasion discovering this grape and this amazing vineyard that he had never heard of!

Full Moon White 2018

'These wines are inspired by the light yet complex and textured wines grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. While driving around the Grenache vineyard our viticulturist friend mentioned a field blend vineyard planted in 1977 in the Paardeberg with 10 interplanted varieties. “Yes we’d love to buy a ton of that if we could!” And so it was. On 7 February the grapes were picked: Chenin Blanc, Palomino, Semillon, Semillon Gris, Colombard, Crouchen Blanc, Viognier, Muscat d’Alexandrie, Chardonnay & Sauv Blanc vines, all growing amongst each other. These were whole-bunch pressed and left to ferment naturally, then aged in one old 500L for a whole year. Naturally of various ripeness levels at picking time, the variation in flavour and acidity makes for an exceptionally interesting character, one that makes field blend like this so rewarding to make and so unique to drink. Cheers! 600 bottles made.' David Cope, Winemaker

Blank Bottle Orbitofrontal Cortex 2018

Orbitofrontal Cortex is named after the part of your brain where conscious decisions are made. It's fair to expect great things with a wine made as the consciously selected best of the best....! On the nose, we have layers of sun dried hay, tonnes of sweet conference pears, baked apples, even some fresh crunchy green apple acidity. It's an intricately put together number, but no fear, if you like your whites with texture, crunch, ripe fruit and with a story, then this is for you.

Lourens Family Wines Lindi Carien 2018

"A beautifully complex wine from Franco Lourens with plenty of opulence and allure ... The nose is ripe and expressive, slightly lactic and creamy, brimming with exotic yellow pastille, tinned pineapple, vanilla pod spice and rock candy notes. The palate has laser-like freshness and crisp, polished precision. Texturally very fine and focused with wound spring tension, underpinned by bristling acids and a tart pineapple and white citrus vivacity ... Lovers of serious Cape white wines will find this new release hard to resist!" Greg Sherwood MW, Wine Safari

Blank Bottle Im Hinterhofkabuff, Elgin 2018

Hinterhofkabuff means backyard shack in Afrikaans. This wine was inspired by an interviewer who described Pieter Walser's office as that exact phrase - a shack! Not wanting to draw attention to this faux pas Pieter named a wine after it ... The wine itself is made from Riesling and has an incredibly pretty floral nose with a more savoury stone fruit and spiced citrus palate

A A Badenhorst Family White 2016

A fine alternative to white Burgundy… Adi’s Family White is never less than headily, ecstatically delicious. There’s perhaps a hint more exoticism on the aromatic profile (it’s a Chenin-led blend including various proportions of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Verdelho, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Sémillon, Marsanne and Palomino), but there’s such an elegant, creamy toastiness and palateweight. It’s all supremely well balanced… white peach, yellow apple, heather and verbena notes which are still tightly coiled at the core and would open up with decanting.

Restless River Ava Marie Chardonnay 2016

We’ve been working with Craig and Anne for 3 years now, and from the start fully expected their Cabernets and Chardonnays to achieve cult status. So they have. Demand is always high and volumes are very low. estless River’s Chardonnay vineyards are some of theoldest the cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde valley. Tiny yields and looong, slow maturation produces some extraordinarily concentrated fruit.

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2017

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Did you know that the collective noun for a group of parrots is a ‘pandemonium of parrots’? Worthy of inclusion as a Christmas cracker factlet, that one. Enjoy your own pandemonium of parrots by investing a case or two of Adi Badenhorst’s Papegaai (Afrikaans for ‘parrot’) Cinsault. The 2017 red uses the same high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines as the first vintage, but this one has a slightly deeper fruit profile thanks to a small proportion of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi, Eben Sadie and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. Joyous juice with more than a hint of Swartland swagger.

David & Nadia Topography Pinotage 2018

From vines planted in 1991 and 1998 reaching altitudes of 240m, where the soils are pure granite, while lower down the granite is decomposed. The fruit is partially destemmed, and around 20% is whole-bunch fermented, which takes place in a mixture of concrete and vertical foudres. It's a lovely expression of Pinotage, displaying a creamy, sweet and ripe nose of red fruits. In the mouth it has fine-grained tannic grip, framing some lovely fragrant cherry fruit alongside black pepper spice and wood notes. A hint of pomegranate and raspberry appear on the mid-palate and hang around on the finish. An elegant wine.

Full Moon Grenache 2018

'These wines are inspired by the light yet complex and textured wines grown on volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. Since there’s no Nerello Cuppucio or Mascalese here in SA, Grenache is the next best thing and it works a charm. The grapes are from a farm of old bush vines outside Darling and were picked on 13 February: early enough to ensure a good, fresh tannin – but not quite as aggresive as the 2016 vintage(!). Grapes were handpicked, footstomped and fermented naturally. A gentle basket-press and then the wine left in a single old 500L barrel for a whole year. Minimal sulphur added before bottling, this is a lean, mean Grenache machine that is drinking superbly already. Whoop! 600 bottles made.' David Cope, Winemaker

If you like freshness, florals, prettiness and perfume in your wines, then look no further. Somewhat reminiscent of the wines of the Terrasses du Larzac, with its Pinot Noir like weight and high toned perfume. Very supple palate with juicy blackberries, rasberry leaf, even a little savoury herbal touch. Pop this in the fridge for half an hour and pour liberally. With bbq grub, with friends. 'Possessing a youthful red plum translucent colour, this wine has all the perfume lift and exuberance you would expect from old vine Cinsault. The nose is aromatically charged, brimming with fresh violets, cherry blossom, rose water, lychee skins, sun dried cranberries, potpourri and an exotic touch of Turkish delight. Wonderful purity and clarity are always hallmarks of this wine as are the radiant fresh acids and bright, crunchy, sappy red berry fruits. Once again, this wine is the epitome of elegance, walking quite lightly, shimmering all the way to the finish with illuminated brilliance. This really is an exceptional, mouth-watering delight. Didn’t realise cinsault could be this good. There’s a richness and generosity to the cherry-blueberry pie fruit. A certain creaminess. Some carbonic here? Beautiful floral notes – like a pot pourri or a big bouquet of blue, purple and red flowers. Mallow, a hint of tarragon… A silky, supple palate but with firm tannins at the end. Generous yet ethereal, quaffable yet serious. More than anything else: very, very enjoyable to drink. Maintains interest to the last drop.

'The 2016 Family Red Blend is a blend of 71% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 11% Cinsault and 5% Tinta Barocca. It has a very pure bouquet, quite floral and intense, with dark cherries, black plum, warm gravel and light truffle scents, the 80% whole bunch completely disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. There is good backbone here, quite dense but well defined with a chalky, slight austere finish, partly because Adi now undertakes more aging in concrete. Give this a couple of years in bottle.' Blank Bottle BIG Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Lovely BIG and smooth. A blend of 6 Cabernet vineyards from 3 different areas, ranging from 116m above sea level to 755m. Related to the Swartland Revolution where Rhone blends were taking over from the Bordeaux blends of Stellenbosch, cabernet suddenly became branded 'uncool.' Wines from each vineyard were vinified separately and bottled under each vineyard name and then the BIG blend was created to show the true character of a South Afircan Cabernet Sauvignon. With stunning black fruit, sweet peppery spice, fine tanning and good acidity, this is a very drinkable wine that shows complexity and liveliness. A wine where each sip stays as interesting as the first. Love this. The fruit from each site was fully destemmed fruit and separately (some of the fruit was still being picked while other batches had longsince been in barrel) went through wild yeast fermentation and ageing in a combination of 225l and 300l used oak barrels for 18 months.
