Apricots cascade off the palate into a heady blend of fresh pineapple chunks, stone fruits and dried mango with a hint of fresh almond. All that sweet tropical fruit is kept in check by a leesy, honey dew melon palate, dried mango, with a vibrant, almost peppery finish.

Blank Bottle Moment of Silence, Wellington 2019

Stunning, all rounder there is nothing you can fault in this wine. The 2019 shows less intensity than the 2018, but is by no means any less delicious, maintaining all of it's style and swagger. Aromas of candied lemon, cooked apple and mango with a core of minerality. Soft and voluptuous, it has a lovely ripeness and a fleshy, creamy mouthfeel, which leads to a perfect tangy freshness giving some zip to its otherwise mellow feel.

Keermont Terrasse White 2016

You’ve heard of the Miracle on 34th Street but what about the Miracle of Paradyskloof? That Keermont winemaker Alex Starey managed to produce a Terrasse White from the notoriously drought-plagued 2016 vintage and score 93 points from two top critics surely has to count as some kind of supernatural occurrence. This old-vine chenin-based blend is a nailed-on deliverer of joy.

Blank Bottle Nothing to Declare 2018

Like a Hunter S Thompson of South African winemaking – Pieter has scoured the Cape Winelands – from Paarl to Stellenbosch to Robertson and the Swartland – in search of complementary fruit to create this gorgeous, spicy, pithy, endlessly complex white blend. This is gonzo winemaking – a cuvée which makes use of all the out-there, uncommon varieties that Pieter has uncovered on his adventures. To make things even better this cuvée is delicious with olive tapenade on toast and with fish like red mullet served with olive tapenade, or even just some fish with fresh leaves and a squeeze of lemon. Pieter conceived this wine as a tribute to the vine smugglers of South Africa – the risk-takers who have provided winemakers like Pieter and others of the new generation in South Africa the foundation to take this South African wines to new heights.

Full Moon White 2018

'These wines are inspired by the light yet complex and textured wines grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. While driving around the Grenache vineyard our viticulturist friend mentioned a field blend vineyard planted in 1977 in the Paardeberg with 10 interplanted varieties. “Yes we’d love to buy a ton of that if we could!” And so it was. On 7 February the grapes were picked: Chenin Blanc, Palomino, Semillon, Semillon Gris, Colombard, Crouchen Blanc, Viognier, Muscat d’Alexandrie, Chardonnay; Sauv Blanc vines, all growing amongst each other. These were whole-bunch pressed and left to ferment naturally, then aged in one old 500L for a whole year. Naturally of various ripeness levels at picking time, the variation in flavour and acidity makes for an exceptionally interesting character, one that makes field blend like this so rewarding to make and so unique to drink. Cheers! 600 bottles made.' David Cope, Winemaker

Blank Bottle Orbitofrontal Cortex 2018

Orbitofrontal Cortex is named after the part of your brain where conscious decisions are made. It's fair to expect great things with a wine made as the consciously selected best of the best....! On the nose, we have layers of sun dried hay, tonnes of sweet conference pears, baked apples, even some fresh crunchy green apple acidity. It's an intricately put together number, but no fear, if you like your whites with texture, crunch, ripe fruit and with a story, then this is for you.

Hinterhofkabuff means backyard shack in Afrikaans. This wine was inspired by an interviewer who described Pieter Walser's office as that exact phrase - a shack! Instantly impressive. Immediate sense of powerful mineral core enveloped in citruses, nectarine, apricot and mellow floral notes, with buttercream and elegant whispers of vanilla. Lots packed in there. No overt oak, some vibrant herbaceous hints. Like Condrieu in parts. The palate is creamy and mineral, with suggestions of battonage with some very good lees, and further citrus inflections and fresh, dewy stonefruit. Texturally indulgent yet fresh and mouthwatering. Great for rich foods. The balance is impeccable. Great length. A wine that will age gracefully for a long while.

Restless River Ava Marie Chardonnay 2016

We’ve been working with Craig and Anne for 3 years now, and from the start fully expected their Cabernets and Chardonnays to achieve cult status. So they have. Demand is always high and volumes are very low. estless River’s Chardonnay vineyards are some of theoldest the cool-climate Hemel-en-Aarde valley. Tiny yields and looong, slow maturation produces some extraordinarily concentrated fruit.

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2017

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

Buitenverwachting Meifort 2017

The 2017 is the purest it's ever tasted. New lead winemaker Brad Paton, has kept out some of the more rustic tannins that could appear in this wine, and just selected better fruit, that might otherwise have gone into the top red, Christine. It is ridiculously good, and although it could do with a bit of time, it will age for 10 years, it is also drinking better than other young Meiforts and can most definitely be enjoyed now. A vineyard owner who sets up a trophy winery in the Helderberg would be happy to slap their top label on this and charge £25, easily.

It's so refreshing to have a big style of red wine that doesn't tip the abv charts and with the 2018 Great SA red winemaker Carl has nailed it! Full Moon Grenache 2018

'These wines are inspired by the light yet complex and textured wines grown on volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily. Since there’s no Nerello Cuppucio or Mascalese here in SA, Grenache is the next best thing and it works a charm. The grapes are from a farm of old bush vines outside Darling and were picked on 13 February: early enough to ensure a good, fresh tannin – but not quite as aggresive as the 2016 vintage(!). Grapes were handpicked, footstomped and fermented naturally. A gentle basket-press and then the wine left in a single old 500L barrel for a whole year. Minimal sulphur added before bottling, this is a lean, mean Grenache machine that is drinking superbly already. Whoop! 600 bottles made.' David Cope, Winemaker

Blank Bottle Oppie Koppie 80.0000, Swartland 2017

'Shiraz and Cinsault from the Voor-Paardeberg, Swartland and Breedekloof. Back in 2014 I was walking through an organically-farmed Shiraz vineyard in the Voor-Paardeberg. It was close to brunchtime, so I picked a bunch of grapes and stripped the berries off the stem. I was left with a clean stem. I then ate the stem. Pure pepper spice! It immediately triggered an idea: if I ferment the wine without removing the stems (a.k.a. whole bunch fermentation), chances were that I could possibly extract some of that exciting spice. So I chucked 33.33333% of the total volume of grapes into a fermentation vessel (stems and all) and crushed it with my feet. With the balance of the grapes, I removed the stems using a de-stemmer and filled the tank. All the grapes then underwent spontaneous fermentation. After 4 weeks, I pressed the grapes and the wine aged in barrel for a year. When the time came for label design, I did a pencil drawing of an old-fashioned film camera taking a photo of a grape-stem. I blackened the camera lens in such a way that only one third of the stem was exposed to the camera. I then called the wine 33.3333. When it came to the 2017 vintage I decided that, in order for this wine to get to the next level, it needed more complexity. The only way to gain complexity is to add vineyards with flavour profiles that would enhance and add layers to the original wine. A little bit of Shiraz from the Swartland and a tad Cinsaut from the Breedekloof did the trick. Having had 80% whole cluster fermentation, I initially called the wine 80.0000 (referring to the percentage exposure to stems as in previous years), but this was confusing to my clients. I then changed the name to Oppie-Koppie, the name the farmer calls the vineyard - a 2017 Voor-Paardeberg Shiraz (my 4th vintage from this block of grapes). Northern Rhône-like in style, super spicy with nice grip. Ageing will only do this wine great but you can also drink it now.' Pieter Walser

A A Badenhorst Family Red 2016

'The 2016 Family Red Blend is a blend of 71% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 11% Cinsault and 5% Tinta Barocca. It has a very pure bouquet, quite floral and intense, with dark cherries, black plum, warm gravel and light truffle scents, the 80% whole bunch completely disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. There is good backbone here, quite dense but well defined with a chalky, slight austere finish, partly because Adi now undertakes more aging in concrete. Give this a couple of years in bottle.' Blank Bottle BIG Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Lovely BIG and smooth. A blend of 6 Cabernet vineyards from 3 different areas, ranging from 116m above sea level to 755m. Related to the Swartland Revolution where Rhone blends were taking over from the Bordeaux blends of Stellenbosch, cabernet suddenly became branded 'uncool.' Wines from each vineyard were vinified separately and bottled under each vineyard name and then the BIG blend was created to show the true character of a South Afircan Cabernet Sauvignon. With stunning black fruit, sweet peppery spice, fine tanning and good acidity, this is a very drinkable wine that shows complexity and liveliness. A wine where each sip stays as interesting as the first. Love this. The fruit from each site was fully destemmed fruit and separately (some of the fruit was still being picked while other batches had longsince been in barrel) went through wild yeast fermentation and ageing in a combination of 225l and 300l used oak barrels for 18 months.

Keermont Estate Reserve 2014

Really would not be surprised if I was told that this was left bank Bordeaux. Dense blackcurrant, mulberry, plum (though fresh – not over-ripe). Only possible doubt would be owing to the sense of sweetness to the fruit. On the nose, notes of toasty tobacco and graphite, wafts of something herbaceous, hints of undergrowth and the beginnings of a tertiary character. The palate is first savoury, then sweet, silky, plush fruits, dried cranberry and currant, and toast and dried herbs. The savoury-bitter tannins are beginning to melt and feel quite noble, gently materialising over a long, Mahler adagietto-invoking finish. Very impressive, just beginning to show mature notes and a must for lovers of South African claret-style wines.
