Domaine Horgelus Sauvignon Blanc & Gros Manseng 2018

Forget Cloudy Bay, forget Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, this Horgelus Sauvignon/Gros Manseng blend costs almost half the price and delivers as much if not more. Typically it shows bright, lifted notes of lemon/lime, melon and grapefruit and a delicate herbaceous character. The Sauvignon Blanc element brings a classic nettle and elderflower zip, while the Gros Manseng gives a gorgeous tropical fruit depth. Endlessly quaffable. Drink from: the moment it's in your possession. Drink until: the bottle is empty.

Domaine Lispaul Val de Loire 2018

A brilliant buy. Perfect for daily drinks, suppers and fish, as well as dinner parties, when you can regale your friends with the background of this wine. I can imagine this being championed as an upmarket but well-priced and very well-chosen house wine at a top Michelin-restaurant. But for now – we’ve got our name on 50 cases just for Swiggers.

Picpoul de Pinet Laurence de Veyrac 2018

Picpoul and fresh oysters: I’m not sure how it happened, but this invigorating, seafresh combo has become a Christmas Eve tradition in my family home. Which is strange considering we live in one of the most landlocked places in Britain. It’s a tradition I heartily recommend nevertheless. With its shellfish-loving, flinty stonefruit and citrus charms, our Veyrac is a classic of the Picpoul genre.

La Valse des Mansengs Domaine Horgelus 2017

"This is the most exciting discovery I have made since I began writing this column — a true revelation! It soars from the glass with an extraordinary vitality and energy that belies its modest origins. It is drinking perfectly now, so I would merely enjoy it while it is so intense and delicious. There are traces of citrus and apricots in the background with floral notes from the small amount of Sauvignon Blanc grapes included. Made in the foothills of the Pyrenées, the owners only pick the grapes in the early hours of the day to preserve their aromatics. Fabulous." Bruce Palling, The Week

Sauvignon de Touraine, Domaine de la Rochette 2018

Think of a delicate, floral Sancerre and then think of a better, brighter, more huggable world in which that wine is close to half the price. That’s what our Fleur de Printemps Touraine gives you. It’s as pretty as a picture, with elderflower and white floral notes that pirhouette over a core of lemon sorbet, while there’s an intense streak of minerality that belies this wine’s lesser known appellation. This is a Sauvignon Blanc that even the anti- Sauvignon Blanc brigade can warm to. An absolute winner with grilled fish. A slurp for you and a glug for the baking dish, which would adjust the right amount of zest and refreshment.

Sauvignon Blanc Vin de France ‘Abstraction #2’ 2018

It’s the passion project of a Muscadet producer - he only has a small vineyard of Sauvignon that he makes for himself really, but a little of it has made its way into the UK. Because it is that little bit cooler in Muscadet than Sancerre, you get a wine that is super delicate and pretty and an absolute delight, but with a great core of minerality and a lemon sherbet flavour that I just couldn’t get enough of. Plus, as an added bonus, it's about half the price of a Sancerre of this quality, just because it doesn't have that added 'fame factor'.

Bourgogne Blanc Domaine Thibert et Fils 2016

From the winner of the best young winemaker in Burgundy. “A treasure trove”… ‘Readers disowning white Burgundy because of prices…should really stock up on these wines” Neal Martin. Peaches and cream with a hint of nutmeg and orange flower water. Soft; gentle; inviting. The palate is a joyous mix of generous ripe, fleshy, white fruits – peach and nectarine, with hints of spice and Chantilly cream, all held tight with a perfectly balanced lemon sorbet acidity, that grips and checks that fleshiness, providing a racy, mineral freshness. It’s a beautifully poised Burgundy. Perfect for a lobster, scallops, roast chicken… or just sitting in the sun on with a bottle and good friends.

Mas Cristine Blanc Cotes du Roussillon 2017

A field(s) blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Macabeu, Carignan Gris and occasionally a bit of Muscat Sec and Vermentino, it is fermented in both tanks and old oak. "2017 was absolutely brilliant for our whites - there is a jump and lift to them that brings a smile to my face, and balances the ripe, tropical notes that come from the Catalan sunshine with a bracing minerality and juiciness that brings it rushing from the glass. Age-worthy, but a delight in its youth, this is a rare wine that can pair with the most sublime of cuisine, think lobster with garlic butter, or just be enjoyed for itself."

Saumur Blanc, Les Fresnettes, Chateau de Targe 2015

Decanter "Top Five Dry Loire Whites of 2015" - 94 points “A really fascinating nose of lime leaf, polished citrus fruit and white peach that has great elegance infused with greengage and wild flowers. There is plenty of alcohol here but with impressive, pithy substance which is set up very well for the cellar. Drink 2017-2025” There's something absolutely ‘a point’ about a rich Loire Chenin at this time of year. Maybe it’s those lovely butterscotch and gingery spice hints. Whatever it is, it’s a winner. Chateau de Targé’s ripe and sumptuous 2015 has loads of texture and spice on the palate. It’s rich and toasty but not remotely overcooked, with plenty of mouthfilling buttery stone fruit and that signature zingy Chenin acidity. Class!

Artisan Vignoble du Reveur 2018

A blend of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer with 10 days of skin contact, making an orange wine. It is arguably our first orange wine at Swig, considering this for quite sometime we wanted to be sure to find the right one. Artisan brings us to a different universe of flavours! It is definitely spicy and exotic, slightly hoppy and freshly grounded white pepper, pink grapefruits, mandarin as well and mango skin and lychee flavours. Fresh and flavoursome as we like it, this wine is original and addictive. To be consumed slightly chilled.

St Romain Sous Le Chateau Domaine Buisson 2017

Considered the warmest Saint-Romain chardonnay site the Buissons own, Sous le Chateau produces a wine with the richness of Sous la Velle if not the same power and concentration. A nice amount of delicate wood spice. Tasting notes: I’ve heard of this cuvée being compared to Puligny in the past. Creamy white butter and elegant white flower and bright nectarine, white peach, vanilla and citrus on the nose. A plump mid-palate, and perhaps a little mellower than Sous le Velle. A nice amount of delicate wood spice.

Pouilly-Fuisse 'Les Vignes Blanches' Domaine Thibert et Fils 2015

The first thing that hits you is that lovely nutty, toasty, beurre noisette oak that wraps around the white peaches and cream core. Once you've managed to stop inhaling this delicious scent and take a sip (or two) you are delighted with a baked peach tart in buttery shortcrust pasty swamped in vanilla custard. Layer upon layer of stone fruit and baking spice deliciousness. Amazing wine. Very few white Burgundies last this long, let alone well.

Chateau Gelineau, Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2016

To find a classy Bordeaux that has hints of all the things we like – sweet berries, cedar and spicy oak, with good body and concentration - at this price is rare. As rare as a sighting of a sleigh-riding Santa in the sky. Though not quite so sibiliant. Note that this super-grand Grande Vin comes from the excellent 2015 vintage, which in this case has helped to propel a comparatively modest claret into the realm of Cru Classé. Drink with: rosbif!

L'Appel des Sereines Syrah, Francois Villard, N Rhone 2016

'I’ll never forget visiting this chap for the first time back in the early nineties. I nicknamed Villard and his two neighbours, Gaillard and Cuilleron, the Three Musketeers in my notes. They were young, outspoken, daring and made expressive, honest wines. Fastforward 25 years and they’re still heroes in the Northern Rhône, but only one makes a budget Syrah like this one. This is, hands down, one of the most fragrant, juicy and bargain-priced Syrahs on earth. I adore the iodine-tinged nose and blackberry palate – it is the definition of this grape and I heartily commend it to you.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

Mas Brunet Cuvee Tradition, Domaine de Brunet 2016

This vintage excites me as much as the first one we had. It is absolutely beautiful with ethereal, almost Pinot Noir aromas of wild strawberries, and then you catch the Syrah notes of violet flowers, with a hint of garrigue herbs. It's so graceful. As it opens up over a few hours, and days the wine seems to get deeper and more intense, and even more beautiful. If made in the New World, or in a classical region of France would easily be £25 or over. It will also age quite a few years, getting better, which is rare at this price. Beautiful with fish, as well as saucisson, pate and terrines, wild mushrooms on toast, as well as with light game, chicken, lamb and beef. Although it's so supple, I'd aim decant it, to get as much expression from it as possible.

‘That has to be the most fragrant and yummy Beaujolais I've had. I cooled it a little on Saturday night then just had to open it with a mate who needed cheering up. It rocked. Domaine Grand Ormeau, Lalande de Pomerol 2014

Lovely ripe plum and blackcurrant with cocoa dust, tobacco leaf, a touch of sandlewood. Very appealing. The palate is a fantastic contrast of those bright plum and currant fruits wrapped in dark secondaries – cigar box, dark chocolate and a bit of pipe tobacco. A producer just over the border from Pomerol, making wine, now with the help of the former winemaker of Petrus, Yannick Reyrel. Smooth for Bordeaux. Mull over it in a decanter and you can keep it for another 4 or 5 years, and get the tertiary flavours of mature Bordeaux.

Domaine Grand Ormeau, Lalande de Pomerol 2016

When it comes to Bordeaux finding quality at a decent price has been getting ever harder to attain. Like a lot of wine lovers, I’ve more or less turned my back. There are marvellous Bordeaux-style wines being made all over the world after all. Very occasionally though, there are glimmers of light in this money-benighted region, clarets that tickle you in all the appropriate places but that don't come with a bullying price tag. One such wine is Domaine du Grand Ormeau’s Lalande-de-Pomerol, whose vineyards are on excellent stony terroir, next-door to Pomerol (and indeed a short hop from the deified Petrus), Domaine Grand Ormeau is producing excellent wines without the silly price tags of their over-inflated neighbours.

Cote de Brouilly Guy Breton 2018

One of the famed ‘Gang of Four’ (Breton, Jean Foillard, Jean-Paul Thevenet and Marcel Lapierre) credited with starting the natural wine movement around the village of Villié-Morgon in the 1980s, Guy Breton is rightly considered one of the most important Beaujolais producers in recent history. Sure, natural wine has become trendy McTrendy, but we prefer to concentrate on the intrinsic quality of the wines. From just 3ha around the cru of Morgon, Breton’s Beaujolais are possessed of a fruity vibrancy, ethereality and tension that are a marvel to behold, and show what can be done when natural winemaking is allied to obsessively careful vineyard management and a deep understanding of the entire winemaking process. It’s the combination of old vines, rigorous sorting of the grapes, low (or no) sulphur additions and a refusal to chaptalise or filter which gives these wines their arresting character. In Beaujolais terms, Breton remains a bona fide don.
