Behold the Chablis of the Mediterranean

I have never forgotten the experience of rocking up at a seafood shack on the lagoon in Leucate (famous for its oyster beds), in the South of France, and the unutterable perfection of that food and wine experience. I ordered a platter full of oysters, clams, mussels - basically every bivalve they had. The platter could probably have fed 12. I was tout seul, but absolutely undeterred. When it came to the wine options, there was no option: it was Picpoul de Pinet or nothing. So I purchased a bottle, which was taken from a case of icy water and placed in front of me, all beaded with condensation and glinting in the sun. What followed could be seen too ways: either it was an unspeakable display of shellfish-based gluttony, or it was a prolonged moment of gastronomic ecstasy. I choose to see it as the latter.


 There can be few finer pleasures than sipping a chilled glass of picpoul with a few ice-cold oysters. It's especially good on a glittering sunshine-y day when the Med is within view but that's not a dealbreaker. In fact, neither are the oysters given this interminable lockdown scenario. Sunshine is a must though. 

With it's zingy, flinty, lemony freshness, Picpoul is the perfect response to sunny weather - and our Laurence de Veyrac Picpoul is a classic of the genre, the 'Chablis of the Med'.

This is absolutely the most refreshing white wine of summer we have found so far.
