A tight and linear Chardonnay that is just starting to reveal its richer flavours now

Tasting Notes

Faced with an unfamiliar bottle, the shrewd wine drinker looks for clues on the back label. Take this Australian Chardonnay for example. Will it taste like a jar of honey that has been left in the sun or will it have the cutting edge of Australia’s new wave of winemakers? The clues to look out for are the alcohol content (a refreshing 12.5%), the region (the Mornington Peninsula is home to most of Australia’s Chardonnay pioneers) and the winery (Yabby Lake just won Australia’s most prestigious wine prize, the Jimmy Watson Trophy). This is a tightly-focused, hazelnut and citrus-infused Chardonnay. Drink now-2016.

Press Note:

David Williams, The Guardian 20 Best Whites for Christmas 2012 "The brilliant Yabby Lake are making some of Australia's finest pinot noir and chardonnay at the moment, in a restrained but luminous style that is just thrilling to drink. This blistering chardonnay, from their more affordable Red Claw second label, crackles with mineral acidity beneath some very generous, carefully oaked fruit." The Wine "I must say, the Chardonnays are the real deal – the absolute stand out of the range for me. The 2009 was a terrific vintage – very balanced. This wine is tight, limey, focused and long – full of vim and vigour" Matthew Jukes‚ 100 Best Australian Wines 2011 19 May 2011 2009 Red Claw Chardonnay He has done it again ace Tom Carson is on a roll (does he stop rolling?) at Yabby Lake. Red Claw, in 2009, has extraordinary minerality and depth which tightens its body, corseting the fruit into a drop dead gorgeous hourglass shape. The estate Chardonnay is one of the finest of its kind in the country and Block 6, sadly only available in miniscule quantities, is set to be a cult wine in no time at all, too.
