David is known as a grand master of Chardonnay in California, where he has clocked up years of service and collaborations with some of the great producers. Until now the key wines for his own 'Ramey' bottlings were ‘Hyde’ and ‘Hudson’ and ‘Ritchie’, as well as the wine ‘Platt’ that we used to get exclusively, but this fruit is no longer available to him. It would not surprise me to see 'Rochioli', a top Sonoma site, surpass all of these.

Tasting Notes

Press Note:

Greg Sherwood MW "Like the best Ramey wines, this Chardonnay combines delicious lemon citrus aromatics, subtle toasty oak and seductive minerality in a most complete package. Plenty of Burgundian influence, intensity and concentration make for a very, very fine Chardonnay and definitely an inspired addition to the iconic Ramey range. But I guess when you make wines as premium as the Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay, any decision to add a new vineyard to the range is going to be based on supreme quality potential. This wine has such depth, bristling lemony / limey acids and a long, long finish with just the most subtle kiss of butterscotch oak. Wow, I’m bowled over by this profound, delicious beauty." Drink from release until 2035+.'

Robin's Note:

I had an amazing experience in 1991. I was off to California and an influential friend made some amazing introductions and I drove around having the most incredible time, visiting the winemakers at Ridge, Frog's Leap and Bonny Doon, where we did some blending. I drove up US Pacific Highway 1. It was phenomenal. But if I was to pinpoint one experience where the winemaker was on a trajectory that would take California to a new level of understanding and quality of a wine, it was David Ramey. I spent a day with him trying out his experiments with Chardonnay in different barrels and different lees stirring techniques. He was ahead of his time.
