No 16 in Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 for 2016 of best of the best after taking into account overall quality and value. Mullineux were also awarded Mullineux 'Winery of the Year'. This perfumed Syrah has notes of spicy citrus rind, refined black fruit, violets and lilies. The palate is elegant and restrained yet with good body and a silky texture balanced by a fresh, natural acidity. The finish is long with supple tannins. We recommend decanting if drunk within the first 3 to 5 years after bottling.

Tasting Notes

Ranked number 16, with a rating of 94 in the 2016 Wine Enthusiast 100 list. To date, this is the highest rated South African wine to appear in the magazine’s The Enthusiast 100 list.

Press Note:

Jamie Goode, 93 points, "From seven vineyards and three different soil types. Floral black cherries and sweet raspberries on the nose. The palate is sweetly fruited but fresh with lovely purity, and hints of pepper and olive and a lovely bright focus. Such a pure Syrah, this should age nicely." Decanter, 93 points 'Another absolute belter from the brilliant winemaking duo of Chris and Andrea Mullineux. It seems that this husband and wife team can do no wrong – certainly, there’s nothing not to like about this stunning effort which boasts a deep colour, intense aroma and a gorgeous fruit compote palate including bilberries, damsons, blackberries, coffee bean and vanilla. Moreover, the ensemble is topped off with richness, freshness and admirable length on the imperious finish.'

Robin's Note:

Grapes for our 2014 Mullineux Syrah come from seven sustainably farmed vineyard parcels in different parts of the Swartland: four parcels planted in the stony Shale and Schist based soils of the Kasteelberg; two parcels of dry-land, bush vines grown in the decomposed Granite of the Paardeberg; and one on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury. Vines are aged between 19 and 26 years. Half the grapes are whole bunch fermented with natural yeasts and the wine is aged 14 months in French oak 225L and 500L barrels and 2000L Foudre, 15% new.
