The ageing potential of Touriga Nacional is comparable to infamous Napa Cabernet Sauvignon or opulent Barossa Shiraz – the profound depth of flavour, bold tannins and palate coating richness that softens beautifully with age. It takes oak well, often developing in to aromas of toasted marshallow, baking spice – vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. What a colour - that's a real glass stainer! Intense all the way to the rim, purple black with a hint of magenta. Incredible concentration on palate to match that extraordinary colour - turkish spices, a touch of juniper, bacon fat, rose petals and goji berries. Smooth and rounded, with a rich, deep, fruit rippling palate.

Tasting Notes

From Pinhão, in the heart of the Douro Valley. Terraced vineyards, rolling hills and old, old vines! Brother and sister duo Antonio and Joanna Maçanita have been working together since 2011. The venture started, like all good sibling projects, with a dare. During her time working in the area Joanna, a viticulturist, stumbled across “her dream” vineyard and challenged her wine-making brother to join forces and with her and produce wines with their own name and stamp on them. Their joint talent and enthusiasm is instrumental in producing this outstanding wine. Their wish was for this bottle of wine to summarise the laughs, discussions and experiences they both had in the process of making it. 90% Touriga Nacional, 10% Sousão - another native Portuguese grape used in port production. 70% of the fruit is from one single old vineyard, planted pre 1930’ – unirrigated, naturally low yielding producing fruit of exceptional quality. The wine spends 12 months in oak – 50% new. Under 8000 bottles made. At present, it is incredibly concentrated – Turkish spices, juniper, bacon fat with rose petals and goji berries. The palate is rich, deep, and rippling with glossy dark fruits and violets. ‘With 50% new oak ageing, this is a rich and spicy wine that also has layers of dense toastiness. Black currants and blackberries come together with the structure and fine acidity to give a rich, concentrated wine that should still age further. Drink from 2018.’ The Wine Enthusiast on the 2013
