Il Crutin is made with 100% Nebbiolo sourced from vines of the Castelletto and Gramolere vineyards in Monforte d’Alba. Because the winery has no ‘minor’ vineyards to use for an entry-level, approachable nebbiolo, the family decided to declassify parts of the Castelletto and Gremolere vineyard to make il Crutin. Il Crutin (‘small cellar’ in Piedmontese dialect) is an old house located on the Gremolere hill: hand-carved in the rock in the 1800’s, purchased by Giovanni Manzone in 2000. Dark plums, coffee beans and aniseed. Cranberries with a bit of leather and a long dry finish, with a berry tinted finish.

Robin's Note:

I’m very intrigued to see how this unfurls. I already get plenty from it now. It’s nice and dry and savoury with a bit of tannin, but there is plenty of Nebbiolo expression here. It is from three Barolo vineyards in Monforte and it’s from the same grapes that make the Barolo, the difference being this is on the skins for less time and in oak for six months, not 18 to 24 months. So in some respects it is more primary and needs more time in bottle to mature, but in other respects it’s more ready to go. This is a super Nebbiolo d’Alba; quite young, yes, but interesting wine.
