Winemaker's note: The Keermont Syrah 2013 has a lighter intensity cherry red colour. On the nose it exudes primary characters of fresh cut herbs, lavender and blueberries as well as more savoury vanilla notes. The wine is soft and elegant on entry with flavours of red apple, spicy fruit and a hint of stemminess. Dusty tannins and a fresh acidity hold the tension of the wine into a long, dry succulent finish. Drink 2016-2024.

Tasting Notes

To think of the vintage and the conditions that that Alex had to deal with in 2013, it is truly remarkable that this wine is so outstanding, let alone even produced! With 3 days of ferocious winds at the end of November, approx 60% of the crop were lost. With plenty of loving TLC and careful nursing, the vineyards recovered and here is the product. Syrah from 3 vineyards on the upper slopes of the estate, with 13% Mouvedre to amp up the palate and add some oomph. This wine spent 20 months maturing in seasoned 500 Litre French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration on 4 December 2014. Due to the very small crop we only produced 5147 bottles and 62 magnums.

Press Note:

SYRAH 12: MATTHEW JUKES WoW in Money week:"my top red wine from the recent South African expo ….""the greatest South African sensory experiences of my year "- 21 November 2014 "Relative newcomer Alex Starey (first official vintage was in 2007) has made a cracking Cornas-style Syrah. Big black fruit, dried flowers, meaty and smoky. It’s a big wine but has great balance and focus. I’d buy some any day of the week." Peter Dean, The Buyer

Robin's Note:

This is one of the new breeed of Syrahs (aka Shiraz) coming from Stellebosch, which has been more Cabernet territory. It's not as rich and sweet as Shiraz's from South Africa and Australia used to be. It comes from higher altitude vineyards that are exposed to cooling winds every day that help to keep the grapes fresh. It is quite full-bodied, but with more bitter herb notes than most of the bigger Shirazes tend to possess.
