Some words from winemaker Toby Owen about the special location that these vines are grown in. "Immediately in front of the vineyard is the highest and nearest of the mountains, Monte Amiata (1734m). Its high slopes of dense deciduous forest have a cooling effect and a pronounced diurnal temperature excursion, especially during the period of ripening: In late summer at sunset, chilled air from the summit of the mountain starts descending into our vineyards cooling the maturing grapes and preserving acidity. These conditions tend to provide us with grapes that are rich, not only in sugars and flavour, but also polyphenols (tannin, colour) and acidity giving naturally concentrated, firm, elegantly structured wines that can age with grace while also drinking well when relatively young. The protective presence of the graceful wooded massif of Monte Amiata lends perfect growing conditions to the patchwork of vines, olives, cherry and chestnut nestled in the high tributaries of Tuscany's great Val d'Orcia. Enchanting and remote, it's a place where man and nature live in harmony. Birds, mammals, plants and insects abound in a glorious springtime riot of colour, texture and sound. Just as did the vineyards of the Etruscan culture 2000 years before, our scattered plots of vines take their nourishment from the fresh mountain springs and the vital soils of limestone and lava heaved up and spewed out by Amiata's tumultuous volcanic past. Protected by the altitude and cool wooded slopes from the excesses of summer rain and heat, our grapes ripen slowly to reach perfect maturity and bestowing us with vibrant wines of intense fruit, elegant acidity and sweet tannin."

Tasting Notes

Maturity wise it has reached perfection so it's a wine you can open any time you feel like a bit of smooth, mellow, generous luxury. Warm Tuscan fruits and flavours fill the senses both on the nose and the palate. The fruit is ripe but it doesn't get too big or rich. Just next to Mont Amiata the nights are cooler which keeps the growing season longer and the wine fresh and elegant, while carrying that lovely Tuscan flavour of fruit that has seen the sun.
