Saint-Amant ‘Les Clapas’ comes from the highest vineyards in the whole of the Rhone, at 500 metres. Exceptionally perfumed, with a hint of violet, fresh berry fruits with amazing garrigues herbs

Tasting Notes

This is about delicacy and nuances rather than power, coming from a terroir much cooler than low lying vineyards. There is also no oak used on this wine. It is for drinking now. Drink with light summer food, barbeques, rabbit, chicken or lamb scented with herbs, sausages, pasta. This is beautifully made by Camille Nosworthy an architect who fell in love with making wine. It’s a 3.5 hectare vineyard of chalk and clay around the village of Suzette at 500 to 620m in the area of Beaumes de Venise in the spectacular Dentelles de Monmirail. These high vineyards and poor soil make the wine so different from those of the Rhone on the valley floor. Saint-Amant’s Les Clapas is not about weight; it’s about perfume, aromatics and vivacity. No fining, indigenous yeasts, natural malolactic fermentation and one year ageing.

Press Note:

"Lovely Syrah dominated violet and black peper nose. Lovely freshness, very clean and pure red fruit aromatics. Very lively and crunchy tannins, full of energy" - Matt Walls

Robin's Note:

This is seriously good. It’s fresh, but with depth and substance. It’s not showy, yet not too restrained, either. It has real Rhone integrity – there is nothing rushed or commercial tasting about this wine It has plenty of grip, and some tannins. The aromas captivate and impress, and the wine gradually develops showing you its full range. You can keep it going for a second day once opened, without any sign of deterioration. It has the high notes of Syrah, with the depth and oomph of Grenache. It’s the kind of wine I will turn to again and again over the winter. The wine is made from very low yields – just 25hl per hectare – which is what you expect from a much more expensive wine. It is perfectly suited to the market foods of Provence - cepes, truffles, rabbit, boar, sausages with herbes de provence, daube, pot roasted chicken with olive stuffing. Perfect for winter dinner parties.
