95 points, 5 Stars ***** - Decanter's only 'Outstanding Champagne' in January issue 2014. OUTSTANDING “Deutz (2006) heads the pack for its gentle, fresh, aromatic character.” "A very fine elegant expression of 2006… The balance of ripeness and sustaining acidity is spot-on.” - Michael Edwards "

Tasting Notes

An outstanding vintage champagne, which spent its early years maturing in the limestone cellars dug deep beneath the Deutz estate, before bursting onto the scene like a champagne supernova, scooping top honours in Decanter Magazine’s Vintage Champagne panel tasting. There’s something on the nose that evokes the chalky dust that kicks up from these vineyards when the wind blows from the east, combined with a pure apple and white pear freshness and a sprinkle of spring flowers. Dense and vital. It does exactly what a great champagne should do, it gives you a little frisson, an impulse to unwind, and then it lifts you a couple of inches off the ground. 12% alc. Drink now-2020.

Press Note:

Decanter: “The 2006 vintage in Champagne has abundant charm and ripeness, thanks to a warm summer that suited Pinot Noir. Deutz heads the pack for its gentle, fresh, aromatic character, a fine-drawn structure and a minerality that comes from balancing grand cru Chardonnay to energise the Pinot in the blend. A great wine for luxurious sauced shellfish such as lobster, or roast turbot with grilled mushrooms.” 95 points, 5 Stars ***** Swig: “An outstanding vintage champagne, which spent its early years maturing in the limestone cellars dug deep beneath the Deutz estate, before bursting onto the scene like a champagne supernova, scooping top honours in Decanter Magazine’s Vintage Champagne panel tasting. Long, very well-sustained finish. Has real class. Showed to perfection how to extract the best of the 2006 vintage. In a year known primarily for the quality of the Pinot Noir, Deutz has created a wine where the Chardonnay really sings out. It wouldn’t surprise me if this were still going strong when other 2006s are beginning to flag. Drink 2014–2020” 95 points Ronan Sayburn MS (Decanter): “An excellent Champagne that was delicate on the nose, expressing a floral, pot pourri character. The balanced palate was both refreshing in acidity but with weight of some ripe, toasty fruit. It’s agood all-round Champagne that wouldwork as an aperitif as well as it would with food.” 95 points Jancis Robinson: “My favourite. Dense and fresh. Very fresh. Putty. Drink 2013-2020” 17.5 points Wine Enthusiast: “This is a wine that balances maturity with a light, fresh style. It’s elegant and immediately attractive with a straight line of acidity cutting through the apple and lemon flavours. It is ready to drink now, but likely to improve for several more years. Drink through 2020.” 93 points Wine Spectator: “A smoky, minerally undertow supports the flavours of black currant, kumquat, honey, toasted brioche and baked apple in this firm version, with an intense and lively bead. Best from 2015 through 2026.” 92 points Michael Edwards: “A very fine, elegant expression of 2006, a Pinot Noir year. The balance of ripeness and sustaining acidity is spot-on.”
