This is one for the wine geeks out there. Glorious, frankly quite mad Portuguese red from 'the most ridiculous wine region in the World'. Think vineyards not more than 300m from the Atlantic ocean, in the sand dunes, on the westernmost tip of Continental Europe. No vine should survive here, but somehow a small number of Ramisco (red) and Malvasia de Colares (white) do, and they produce some insanely brilliant wines.

Tasting Notes

"Though Casal Santa Maria is a new project, it seems to quite easily have tapped into the soul and history of its tiny, but storied wine region. The first mention of Colares wine appears in documents dating to 1148. In the 15th and 16th century, the Colares wines were consumed by royalty and aristocrats. "The ships that 'discovered' Brazil and parts of Asia carried Colares wines," says Santos, though he is unwilling to vouch for what shape they were in by the time they reached the end of their voyages." -, Alder Yarrow

Press Note:

"Light ruby in the glass this wine has a remarkable aroma of garrigue, sandalwood, red fruit, and a hint of barnyard. In the mouth, gorgeous dried flowers, raspberries, and redcurrants mix with wet stones and a bit of mint. Faint, sandpapery tannins wrap around the edges of mouth. Orange and other citrus notes linger in the finish. Aged in Brazilian mahogany barrels. Quite unique and remarkable. 13% alcohol. Score: between 9 and 9.5" -, Alder Yarrow "I was really fascinated by this wine because it has essentially the same base material as the 2006 Ramsico from Adega Colares which I’d tasted earlier in the day. It had very high volatile acidity which Rosa Santos overcame by blending in 15% of another vintage. So it’s much fruitier than the Adega’s 2006 with a nice concentration of sour maraschino cherries and vivid pomegranate fruit threaded with mineral, slightly smoky, clove tannins. Casal Santa Maria’s 800 bottles were aged at Casal Santa Maria for the last one and a half years and it was fined and filtered prior to bottling. Very good." - Sarah Ahmed, the Wine Detective
