Golden aromas of ripe, oven baked apricots, fresh pineapple chunks and wall climbing magnolia. The nose conjures up balmy evening sitting on the terrace (or in South Africa - the stoep) and as the sun goes down, the air filling with a heavenly, sweet fragrance of the flowers - gardenias perhaps, climbing up the trellis and walls. All that sweet tropical fruit is kept in check by a leesy, honey dew melon palate, dried mango, witha vibrant, almost peppery finish.

Tasting Notes

Kevin and Perry, Simon and Garfunkel, SWiG and Secateurs Chenin Blanc. Duos throughout history that you can not help but think of the other when you think of one! The 2017 vintage incorporates many parcels on the Kalmoesfontein farm, with the oldest planted in 1957! The majority, though are planted between '66 and '76. Adi is replanting the whole time with young vines, because, as we all know, old vineyards can not last forever. In the words of fellow Swartland winemaker Eben Sadie, "you can land on the moon but you can't plant an old vineyard." His aim looks beyond his lifetime - he's thinking ahead 40 years or so - for his children to be walking through vineyards that he's planted in the last 10 years, that are then thought of to be old. Looking across the hillsides from one vineyard, I remember Adi pointing across to a bare, rocky patch of land and telling me how one day, his son would sit in the shade there. Terribly romantic and Kipling-esque. For the first time, the 2017 does now incoporate about 15% skin contact. After a recent trip to Abruzzo and having spent several days with the legend Emidio Pepe, he felt inspired to introduce this. Not enough to be orange, or darker in colour, but just enough to give the wine that extra bit of texture and grip. Like all Badenhorst wines, there's no additions (none of those fancy designer yeasts, acids or stabilising agents) and no fining. Really outstanding, and exceptionally good value.

Press Note:

Jancis Robinson MW: "Broad and tangy. Just the job for a party white. Crunchy with masses of personality. Lightly and attractively bitter on the end." "Sweet lovely, pure apple, with touch of vanilla pod, juicy lemon freshness shines brightly. Quite delicate frame, with perfectly balanced structure and generous, ripe fruit. " Victoria Daskal 92 "A lovely wine, with a crystalline citrus-fruit character, good acidity and appealing spiciness. Some apple and pear notes, with great tension. There’s a hint of sweetness, but this balances the acidity really well." Jamie Goode 95 "Pale gold, fine haunting pear fruits and a lovely drift of honeyed richness: very enticing. Poised, fresh lively, and elegant, with a clean line of acidity, and with sustained araomatic interest on the palate, as well as the nose. Excellent Chenin of a softer balance than some. A fine aperitif." Andrew Jefford 90
