Last year, we asked Adi, more hopefully than expectantly, whether he would consider making a red Papegaai to complement his deliriously popular Papegaai white blend. And he did it. No demure, no delay, no cheeky Badenhorst mind games. It was almost frighteningly straight-forward. To top it off, the wine he came up with, a 100% Cinsault, was utterly lovely: bright, light, clean and crunchily fruity, just a joy to drink - another gold star for the bird man of Kalmoesfontein and many happy, sated Swiggers. If only life could always be this way...A week or so ago, with bated breath, we had our first taste of the second vintage and, joy of joys, the man's gone and done it again!


Tasting Notes

The Papegaai 2017 red uses the same super high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines, but this time it has a slightly darker, deeper fruit profile thanks to the addition of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi (it's a component in his red blend and his rosé), Eben Sadie (his excellent varietal Tinta Barocca, Treinspoor) and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. It's a delicious development of the Papegaai Red label which makes us more pleased with ourselves than ever that we broached the idea to Adi in the first place. It's as compellingly quaffable a South African red blend as you will find. Joyous juice with more than a hint of Swartland swagger.
