Marquesa de Atiza Blanco 2016

Do you know what Spain's number one grape variety is? You'd be forgiven for drawing a blank! It's Macabeo, and here is an example of that very grape variety. Being as popular as it is, this wine could so easily fall into step with a veritable ocean of generic Spanish whites. But you know that if it did, we wouldn't be listing it! This is a particularly clean example, exuding pretty floral notes and delivering a delightful roundness on the palate. Soft and peachy, with a bright acidity. It's not a world-beater, but it is outstanding value and very gluggable to boot.

Alphabetical White Vin Blanc 2016

The 2016 vintage of the Alphabetical white is a Roussane led little number, and what a fun wine it is. Ripe apricots, canteloupe melon, a stony palate and an elderflower driven acidity that makes it lively on the finish, fresh, and very very sippable.

Pinot Blanc Portrait Philippe Zinck 2016

It has that handy thing of being neither Chardonnay or Sauvignon, so you’re not going to upset anyone, yet it appeals to people who like one or the other, but it’s no compromise; it happily replaces a Macon, Chablis or unoaked Chardonnays but has some of the aromatics and fruit of a generous Chenin. The aromas are a bit like ripe pear, melon and apples all in one with floral notes. It has good texture and the really expands and fills the mouth, with a nice light fresh tingle. Open a bottle and return to it 3 or 4 days later and it will still be delicious.

Albarino, Nai e Senora, Terra de Asorei 2016

White flowers mingle with pear, peach, apple, a little tropical fruit and faint herbal notes. Deliciously quaff-worthy with refreshing, tangy citrus and tropical fruit on the palate. Lively acidity, nice palate-weight and a touch of sea salt minerality. It's perfect for crossing the divide between drinkers of Sauvignon and Chardonnay; it has the light pleasing freshness of Gavi, but with sunnier disposition and more interesting flavour without being over the top. A pretty perfect house wine!

Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc Kevin Judd , Marlborough 2016

Its deceptive lack of colour in the glass betrays a punchy, aromatic wine. Oodles of elderflower and gooseberry on the nose with an almost spicy tomato leaf end note. This gives way to riper gooseberry and citrus on the palate, edged with minerality and rounded off by a beautiful acidity. Great with goats cheese salad or seafood risotto. 13.5%

Alpha Estate Malagousia 2016

Torpor being the dominant sensation of most Brits during the festive season, here's a touch of zesty Greek exoticism to spice things up a little. This is a bright, summery white with a subtle muscat-y aromatic twist supporting a fruit profile of pear drop, orange sherbert, melon and pear. Hints of tropical sauvignon blanc. A bit herbal too. Frankly, there’s all sorts going on. On the palate, it has a bracing saline minerality giving a tingly, mouthwatering that compels another sip.

BK Wines 'Ovum' Gris, Adelaide Hills 2016

A note from Brendon: Custard cream with a green-apple bite. The last of the fruit to come off the vine followed by a luxuriously gentle fermentation has resulted in confectionary flavours atop a firm acidic plinth – pure pear drops. This is a wine that will lend itself exceedingly well to sumptuous, exotic dishes – Chinese sausage or fragrant Thai chicken rice would fit the bill.

BK Wines 'Skin 'n' Bones' White, Adelaide Hills 2016

A new arrival from our favourite Adelaide Hills winery! This wine is 98% Savagnin (not to be confused with Sauvignon!), a lesser-seen variety whose best expression in its native France can be found in the Jura. The juice sits on its skins for one month before going into barrel for natural malolactic fermentation to occur. It retains wonderful freshness while delivering a fanfare of baked apples, honey-roast pears, camomile, dried apricots, orange peel, peaches and cream, and a decidedly herbal perfume of fresh oregano, sage and a hint of fennel. An uplifting, singing acidity adds brightness to the otherwise soft and round palate, making for a lip-smackingly good, dangerously gluggable summer gem. Resist the temptation to drink it all at once though - this wine demands good company and at leat one full evening of deep contemplation.

Lukas Van Loggerenberg 'Kameraderie' Chenin Blanc 2016

With an impressively bad stroke of luck, Lukas broke his kneecap just before the start of the first vintage of Van Loggerenberg Wines, and was out of commission having to undergo major knee surgery during harvest. Thankfully his mates and family members mucked in to help in the cellar while he was laid up in hospital – hence the decision to name his old-vine Paarl chenin Kamaraderie. Just four barrels made following tiny yield in the 2016 vintage. This wine is all about the quality of the fruit, and an object lesson in the ‘less is more’ winemaking ethos. It’s a bona fide stunner – pure, peachy, hypnotic hints of white flowers and soft green herbs, textured so that it’s impossible to spit out (as we’re supposed at tastings…), with a delicate savoury spiciness coming from the old French barrels it’s aged in. Really mindblowing for a wine he effectively made from his hospital bed.

Condrieu 'Les Vallins', Domaine Blanc Christophe 2016

It's more restrained than the 2014 when we first encountered it, in Spring 2016, but with a few more months it will develop richer flavours. I think the 2016 is a finer wine than the 2014, and overall a better balanced wine, and its evolution will be slower meaning it will keep for longer. Delicate at first, but as you swirl the glass the aromas of apricot, peach, herbs and pollen notes begin to come out and captivate. As it opens the fruits become more pronounced on the palate. The texture (think finest down pillow) and concentration, a bit like a fine Barsac, is sufficient that you feel the density in your mouth, the beautiful lingering stone fruit flavours. It will develop in richness and flavour over the next 12 months, but retain its freshness and purity. I'll be sneaking a bottle for Christmas but it will probably be at its best from summer 2018 for 2 to 3 years.

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A deep purple in the glass, there's something undeniably juicy, bitter sweet chocolatey and clove studded fruit laden about this. Dark chocolate dipped orange, a hint of menthol with a lovely warm earthiness- think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy Autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a grilled Barnsley chop cooked with rosemary and some whole baked garlic cloves. A great take on a Cape style Bordeaux blend.

This is one of our most wonderful, delicious wines. It's blissfully light but full of character, with the lifted red fruit aromas. It could almost be Pinot Noir, with an earthiness and rusticity from Cinsault that gives it some oomph. It's excellent red to go with fish, but will also be brilliant with meats. If you like freshness, florals, prettiness and perfume in your wines, then look no further. Chorey-les-Beaune 'Les Bons Ores', Maratray-Dubreuil 2016

Chorey-Les-Beaune is a pretty modest appellation, underrated in the firmament of Burgundy’s vineyards, but this is precisely the kind of wine that can score big in great years. In Chorey-Les-Beaune ‘Les Bons Ores’ Maratray-Dubreuil we have a wine made by a brilliant winemaker that punches above its weight every year. This is one the best-value wines in Burgundy. Lukas Van Loggerenberg 'Breton' Cabernet Franc 2016

It’s telling that Lukas references cool-climate Old World wine with his Cab Franc. ‘Breton’ is in fact the local Loire name for the grape. Lukas has made just three barrels of it from a couple of rows of vines in the Polkadraai Hills, just outside of Stellenbosch. Most Cape cab franc is made in the Bordelais mould, but here there’s more affinity with Anjou or Touraine – the grapes are picked early, giving an ]eminently quaffable 12.5% alcohol. Winemaking is very hands-off. Natural ferment, neutral barrels, no racking until bottling with no additives except a little SO2 at bottling. Pure, vibrant juice, wonderfully self-assured, low in alcohol but with the tannic structure and acidity to work really well with food - and to age.

Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2016

A wine with a more than unique history and story. The small village of Tesselaarsdal in the Overberg, 24km North East of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is named for East India Company settler Johannes Tesselar. On his death in 1810, he bestowed the land to his freed slaves and owner/winemaker Berene herself is a descendant on one of those very slaves. Domaine Terre de Mistral 'Rosalie' Sainte Victoire, Cotes de Provence 2016

Rosé, schmozé I hear you cry, what makes this one so special? What makes this stand out from the crowd, other than its seriously delicious red fruit profile and oh so delicate touch, is the addition of the secret ingredient, Rolle a.k.a. Vermentino. When added to the Syrah and Grenache, this adds a little oomph in the form of a tremendous mouth feel making it round, unctuous, and elegant, separating this from many in the market today, and that’s all apart from the fact it comes from what’s considered to be the best terroir in Provence, Sainte Victoire, which allows the grapes to ripen beautifully.
