Marquesa de Atiza Blanco 2016

Do you know what Spain's number one grape variety is? You'd be forgiven for drawing a blank! It's Macabeo, and here is an example of that very grape variety. Being as popular as it is, this wine could so easily fall into step with a veritable ocean of generic Spanish whites. But you know that if it did, we wouldn't be listing it! This is a particularly clean example, exuding pretty floral notes and delivering a delightful roundness on the palate. Soft and peachy, with a bright acidity. It's not a world-beater, but it is outstanding value and very gluggable to boot.

Domaine Horgelus Sauvignon and Gros Manseng 2017

Forget Cloudy Bay, forget Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, this Horgelus Sauvignon/Gros Manseng blend costs almost half the price and delivers as much if not more. Typically it shows bright, lifted notes of lemon/lime, melon and grapefruit and a delicate herbaceous character. The Sauvignon Blanc element brings a classic nettle and elderflower zip, while the Gros Manseng gives a gorgeous tropical fruit depth. Endlessly quaffable. Drink from: the moment it's in your possession. Drink until: the bottle is empty.

Pecorino, Linea Miru, Vinicola Carassanese 2017

Gentle ripe fruit, unfettered by oak. As easy-going as you like. Sweet floral apples – a Golden Delicious and Red Delicious sort of vibe – with pear drops and melon and a hint of jasmine. It’s generously fruity but with a palate-cleansing minerality at the end, that ultimately makes it a very refreshing wine

A A Badenhorst Papegaai White Blend 2017

Grown up doesn't mean boring! The 2017 rendition of our favourite Papegaai has more depth and layers - a crunchy poached and dried pear, quince, and lemon biscuit number. For those not familiar with bushvine Palomino (and when it's not made in to sherry,) it offers stunning subtle aromas of salted green apples - very fine and nuanced.

Thelema Mountain Sauvignon Blanc 2017

This has a very pretty aroma, more blackcurrant than the herbaceous gooseberry styles you can get. The palate is lovely, floaty, elegant and pretty. Refreshing but not at all sharp or aggressive. I really like it, reminding me of what it was like at its best. Refreshing but not overtly so. A lovely drink. Many Sauvignons from anywhere in the world cost a lot more but few are more enjoyable.

Alphabetical White Vin Blanc 2017

A blindingly good wine for the price made from one of my favourite grapes, roussanne, that you find in Northern and Southern Rhone blends, but in this case from South Africa. It is a masterful little wine that wont overtake proceedings but will add a lovely bit of character to a lunch or an evening - a scent here and there of stone fruits and mountain herbs as you lift the glass to your nose - with just the right amount of fruit and character for foods like fish, chicken, or fresh pasta with vegetables or riccota. It will be lovely with light starters like burrata and olives. It sits firmly in, if not at the very summit of, the unbeatable-value midweek bottle category. If you are in one of those households where someone likes Sauvignon but someone has gone off it, and you can't agree on what to drink then try this.

Dolinebrune 'Roc Blanc' Mas Brunet, Domaine de Brunet 2016

A ray of sunshine from the south of France. The blend of Viognier, Vermentino, and Grenache Blanc hits the nose with hay, a touch of lavender, rose petal and the richness of quince or membrillo. The palate has a textured gristiness - it's fleshy and balanced with juicy tropical fruits and remarkable drinkability. This was made to slake thirsts in one of France's hottest regions. Here's hoping we have a summer that warrants its liberal application!

AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2017

Golden aromas of ripe, oven baked apricots, fresh pineapple chunks and wall climbing magnolia. The nose conjures up balmy evening sitting on the terrace (or in South Africa - the stoep) and as the sun goes down, the air filling with a heavenly, sweet fragrance of the flowers - gardenias perhaps, climbing up the trellis and walls. All that sweet tropical fruit is kept in check by a leesy, honey dew melon palate, dried mango, witha vibrant, almost peppery finish.

Pinot Blanc Portrait Philippe Zinck 2016

It has that handy thing of being neither Chardonnay or Sauvignon, so you’re not going to upset anyone, yet it appeals to people who like one or the other, but it’s no compromise; it happily replaces a Macon, Chablis or unoaked Chardonnays but has some of the aromatics and fruit of a generous Chenin. The aromas are a bit like ripe pear, melon and apples all in one with floral notes. It has good texture and the really expands and fills the mouth, with a nice light fresh tingle. Open a bottle and return to it 3 or 4 days later and it will still be delicious.

Stadt Krems Gruner Veltliner Lossterrassen 2017

I love this wine. I came across it in a room full of Austrian whites and thought it was the best value in the room yet still full of Gruner character - but this grape has become so hot, everyone wants it, you can easily spend £20 plus for a similar example. With a verve that starts at the beginning and takes you to the end of every sip, keeping it lively and refreshing, and its lovely mouthfilling fruit with flavours of white currants and citrus and then classic Gruner white pepper notes it's the perfect wine to have in your fridge, and will be far more interesting than your average daily sipper.

Albarino, Nai e Senora, Terra de Asorei 2017

There is a special sort of malaise that is liable to overtake one during the summer months when, feeling a sudden thirst, one realises he is without that supremely dependable, pure, crisp and flavoursome white wine which would make his life complete. One can see it in one's mind's eye, sure enough - chilled, with a fine frosting of condensation on the bottle, conjuring images of waves lapping the shore, iridescent sea spray and great teeming platters of massive prawns, but upon opening the fridge door: nothing, vacant space, an accusatory absence which no other beverage can remedy. You may not realise it, but that void in your life is albariño-shaped.

Thelema Mountain Sutherland Chardonnay Elgin 2017

To have a wine that keeps you coming back from more, time after time, and has you discovering new things with each inhale, at this price point, is a thing of true beauty and rarity. At first you get a toasty, slighty smokey beurre noissette on the nose that opens into a vanilla tinted toffee apple and just a touch of that tangy citrus to draw it back in. The palate continues this incredible focus and taut minerality with chantilly cream served over a rich buttery apple tart injected with that vigour and exuberance of a flinty minerality.

Riesling Richard Bocking Mosel 2016

Riesling of this quality at this price is unheard of. It comes from the steep (30% to 60%) Taubenhaus vineyard overlooking Trabach in the Mosel and next to some of Germany's most famous vineyards . A light, fresh bouquet of blooming flowers characterizes this delicate, by-the-glass Riesling. Made using grapes from Böcking's own Taubenhaus vineyard, this is vinified in stainless steel and made for immediate drinking pleasure. Entry-level wine doesn't get much vibrant and enlivening than this. An ethereal nose of fresh, blooming white flowers with white peach and green apple notes. Dry to off-dry but with the classic riesling acidity it's all about refreshment. A breakfast wine if ever there was one.

Riesling Stefan Winter 2016

'Today is the day that you order your very first case of German Riesling. Believe me, this wine is worth it and this is because it is truly dry, magically tangy and citrusy and also the proud possessor of a stunning perfume. While I was tasting this wine my cousin and her pal rocked up and they both grabbed a glass – they were so shocked at the flavour I wish I had taken a photograph to capture the pleasure on their faces. Boina White, Portugal Boutique Winery 2017

A traditional Douro field blend (a co-fermentation of various interplanted white grape varieties) this has a core of stone fruits and green apple with the waxy, toasted nut intensity that often comes from seriously old vines. On the palate, an almost palomino conference pear and white peach fruit profile, but what sets this apart from almost all wines at this price point is the intense minerality rounded off with a buttery finish and hint of toasted hazlenut. This is a serious winner!

Blank Bottle Moment of Silence, Wellington 2017

Stunning, all rounder there is nothing you can fault in this wine. The 2017 shows less intensity than the 2016, but is by no means any less delicious, maintaining all of it's style and swagger. Aromas of candied lemon, cooked apple and mango with a core of minerality. Soft and voluptuous, it has a lovely ripeness and a fleshy, creamy mouthfeel, which leads to a perfect tangy freshness giving some zip to its otherwise mellow feel.

Domaine Castera Jurancon Sec 2017

There are certain wine regions you know are capable of producing sensational and distinct wines but for one reason or another they have not really reached that level. Jurancon is just such a region where over half the wine is made by the coop and most of the rest is made by producers who have not really caught up with the market. At a wine fair in Montpellier recently I hit upon a very special producer. Frank Lihour is a young, fifth generation winemaker from Monein, who has lit a fire under this sleepy region with wines that sing with Jurancon purity and terroir. Franck has made wines for over 10 years around the world (including, it turns out, at our friends at Beaumont winery in South Africa) where he picked up many ideas to improve the quality of wine back home. He gingerly introduced them to his father, and now has taken over full throttle, and wow, these wines are superb!

Artisan Vignoble du Reveur 2016

A blend of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer with 10 days of skin contact, making an orange wine. It is arguably our first orange wine at Swig, considering this for quite sometime we wanted to be sure to find the right one. Artisan brings us to a different universe of flavours! It is definitely spicy and exotic, slightly hoppy and freshly grounded white pepper, pink grapefruits, mandarin as well and mango skin and lychee flavours. Honeysuckle, lemon pith, and clotted cream on the nose, with just a hint of struck match. There's orange flower water there too. This is definitely a "shove your nose in there a bunch of times because it'll be different with every sniff" sort of wine. The palate is a great combination of power and subtle nuance. There are some big flavours there - ripe tropical fruit notes, creamy touches, textured oak, but also lighter floral edges and gentle spice as well. Turner Pageot Les Choix 2012

If the La Rupture (their crazy Sauvignon Blanc) has gone a bit punk, this is writhing on its back and air-guitaring to the Ramones with an oversized safety pin through its nose. This Marsanne is left on its skins for several weeks during and after ferment, giving it a warm gold/bronze hue. The nose is heady, gloriously oxidative with dried peaches, apricots, cloves and cinnamon. Smells a bit like proper bread pudding. The palate is extraordinary – there’s real grip there and beautiful texture – it’s all like proper, waxy honeycomb with the richness of sweetness but totally dry. I think this would beat a fair few Palo Cortado when paired with good Pata Negra. What an amazing and interesting wine. 14% Drink now - 2025

This is very impressive. Very much in the buttery Burgundian mould. Rich but refined white-butter notes on the nose, seamlessly melding into something quite savoury and mealy. A hint of toast. BK Wines 'Skin 'n' Bones' White, Adelaide Hills 2016

A new arrival from our favourite Adelaide Hills winery! This wine is 98% Savagnin (not to be confused with Sauvignon!), a lesser-seen variety whose best expression in its native France can be found in the Jura. The juice sits on its skins for one month before going into barrel for natural malolactic fermentation to occur. It retains wonderful freshness while delivering a fanfare of baked apples, honey-roast pears, camomile, dried apricots, orange peel, peaches and cream, and a decidedly herbal perfume of fresh oregano, sage and a hint of fennel. An uplifting, singing acidity adds brightness to the otherwise soft and round palate, making for a lip-smackingly good, dangerously gluggable summer gem. Resist the temptation to drink it all at once though - this wine demands good company and at leat one full evening of deep contemplation.
