Cruz de Piedra Garnacha 2015

Bright, ripe brambly fruit with soft notes of sweetly spiced cherry and liquorice. Very much quaffable on its own but there's a bit of structure to it as well, meaning its pleasures will be amplified with food. This is going to marry well with anything from a juicy medium-rare ribeye to a robust central-heating-for-the-soul winter stew. I opted to drink it with stewed beef cheek and buttery garlic mashed potato, and felt like the cat's miaow in consequence.

Syrah Laurence de Veyrac 2017

The Christmas story could have been very different. Had the three wise men been waylaid by a bottle of this Syrah on the way then they would certainly have chosen more exciting gifts! A super nose, full of lovely Syrah aromas, black currant, violet, licorice, a bit of pepper and spice with a good hearty juiciness. This is not a pricy Northern Rhone equivalent but it is the best £10 Syrah from the Languedoc we’ve had for many years.

Barbera Bonelli 2017

‘Cheap’ is not a word you often hear from wine merchants. Not publically anyway. But ‘cheap’ doesn’t always have to be followed by ‘nasty’. It might also be followed by ‘cheerful’. That’s a good thing to be and there should be no shame in saying so. ‘Cheap and nasty’ is a bargain-bucket Crazy Frog’s ‘Last Christmas’ EP, ‘cheap and nasty’ is a bumper roll of Poundland binbags. ‘Cheap and cheerful’ It’s also organic. Can’t say fairer than that, guv. Super with a bowl of pasta and tomato sauce.

Soli Pinot Noir, Miroglio,Thracian Valley 2016

'OK, this is the joker in the pack. I hold my hands up. You will have two bottles of this cheeky Pinot in your mixed case and you will not believe what’s happening when you dip your hooter into the glass. It is budget-priced, of course, but your expectations will undoubtedly be set low and then the surprise will build in your eyebrows, before making it down to your smile. Yes, this is Bulgaria’s hidden weapon – and who the hell would have guessed it would be a Pinot? Not me, that’s for sure.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

Autocarro No 27 2016

Red fruits with a hint of something darker, Reminiscent of good Chianti Classico - with plums, red cherries, and raspberries. The tannins are gentle but assert themselves somewhat on the finish, providing a firm grip that is at once rustic and pleasing. While certainly gluggable, it's not forgettable, and definitely warrants the odd pause of appreciation. Superb with summer barbecue fare, on its own, or with bigger, meatier dishes, this is a great red to have around in case of need. 33% Aragonez, 33% Touriga Nacional and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

Titos Garnacha, Familia Bastida 2015

"Such good value, I almost fell out of my chair" – Robin Davis. Yep, Spain really is a wellspring of vinous bargains these days: rich winemaking heritage, check; huge diversity of terroir, check; loads of gnarly old vines with the potential to produce high-quality fruit, plenty of interesting grape varieties, cheap land and production costs – check, check, checkeroo. This wine, with its quite serious structure and complex, oak-spiced dark berry fruit profile, is a prime example of the amazing value Spain offers, a wine whose charms would inevitably come with a heftier price tag were it made practically anywhere else in the world.

Gamay 'Fleur de Printemps' Domaine de la Rochette 2017

This is a joyful gamay, unpretentious, juicy and easy drinking from Touraine, central Loire. A slight pepperiness and a perfume of violet delicately emerges from the glass. The Gamay grape, so famous in Beaujolais, provides in the Loire a cleaner and sharper style. The tannins here are soft and smooth, giving an extremely refreshing style - drink it slightly cooled to express more intensely its youthful fruit character. Perfect with friends, sharing some charcuterie and cheese.

Mas Brunet Cuvee du Mazet, Domaine de Brunet 2015

Rhone varieties meet the Languedoc in this ethereally lovely red blend. Think along the lines of a classic Chateauneuf du Pape with a little added freshness from Mas Brunet’s location in the cool, garriguey limestone plateau of the Terrasses de Larzac (prime Languedoc winegrowing country, a short hop from the ‘Lafite of the Languedoc’, Mas de Daumas Gassac). This is Robin’s de facto house wine, a genuine portfolio classic which overdelivers like a hyperactive Santa.

Domaine Terre des Chardons Bien Lune 2016

Sweet and seductive spiced cherry and stewed strawberry fruit, with a lifted floral element. Violets. The palate is reminiscent of sticking your finger in the dish when you're making a Summer pudding. It's all about that intense fragrance. Again, produced in line with the lunar calendar. Supple, juicy and immensely quaffable, with a surprising lightness of touch for such a hot-climate wine. Slides down almost too easily.

Rote Kuvee Groszer Wein 2015

Normally £16.95 'Made from the excellent Austrian red grape Blaufränkisch blended with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this is a beautiful wine, showcasing the very best this country has to offer at a fighting price. The depth of plum and berry fruit, cut with cinnamon spice and pink peppercorns, is astounding. It is a claret-shaped wine with an entirely modern and enthralling outlook. Not only that, I love the label and the whole atmosphere surrounding the ritual of opening and drinking this wine. A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Did you know that the collective noun for a group of parrots is a ‘pandemonium of parrots’? Worthy of inclusion as a Christmas cracker factlet, that one. Enjoy your own pandemonium of parrots by investing a case or two of Adi Badenhorst’s Papegaai (Afrikaans for ‘parrot’) Cinsault. The 2017 red uses the same high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines as the first vintage, but this one has a slightly deeper fruit profile thanks to a small proportion of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi, Eben Sadie and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. Joyous juice with more than a hint of Swartland swagger.

Chateau Gelineau, Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2015

That touch of Pauillac, that fragrance of Margaux, that charm of St Emilion... ah, yes, I remember it well! Good Bordeaux at this price is as rare as a hen harrier sighting. We’ve not found better at this price for many years. It also happens to come from the excellent 2015 vintage, which can help propel a comparatively modest Bordeaux to heights of a more expensive wine. Our friend in Bordeaux who works with a few Chateaux and is not supposed to favour any particular one, did say, ‘Ah, nice choice – it’s a bit of a secret’. Very good with roasts.

Corbieres, Chateau de Durfort 2015

SUPER SPECIAL MONEY WEEK WINE CLUB PRICE FOR MARCH 'I remember buying the 2010 vintage of this wine back in 2012 and it was almost identical to this 2015 vintage in richness, gloss and length. The flavour defies belief not least because it is made from Syrah and Grenache but it looks more like a swaggering claret than it does an earthy Corbières. L'Appel des Sereines Syrah, Francois Villard, N Rhone 2016

'I’ll never forget visiting this chap for the first time back in the early nineties. I nicknamed Villard and his two neighbours, Gaillard and Cuilleron, the Three Musketeers in my notes. They were young, outspoken, daring and made expressive, honest wines. Fastforward 25 years and they’re still heroes in the Northern Rhône, but only one makes a budget Syrah like this one. This is, hands down, one of the most fragrant, juicy and bargain-priced Syrahs on earth. I adore the iodine-tinged nose and blackberry palate – it is the definition of this grape and I heartily commend it to you.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

Thelema Mountain Merlot 2015

Classy nose, redcurrant, and gentle herb notes. Incredibly easy to drink and enjoy but with class and finesse. Super charming yet smart. Amazing value. Lovely Sunday wine and dinner party bottle. Yet again, amazing value. Lovely for drinking now, with no hard edges. But as with all Thelema wines they age well, so you don’t have to rush it. Cotes du Rhone 'Les Clapas', Domaine Saint Amant 2016

Prettily floral – violets – with peppery soft fruit. Plenty of regional typicity here. Delicate and spicy with a little grainy tannin. A great value CDR. This is about delicacy and nuances rather than power, coming from a terroir much cooler than low lying vineyards. There is also no oak used on this wine. It is for drinking now. Drink with light summer food, barbeques, rabbit, chicken or lamb scented with herbs, sausages, pasta. This is beautifully made by Camille Nosworthy an architect who fell in love with making wine. It’s a 3.5 hectare vineyard of chalk and clay around the village of Suzette at 500 to 620m in the area of Beaumes de Venise in the spectacular Dentelles de Monmirail. These high vineyards and poor soil make the wine so different from those of the Rhone on the valley floor. Saint-Amant’s Les Clapas is not about weight; it’s about perfume, aromatics and vivacity.

Chianti Rufina 'Cedro' Lavacchio 2016 (Organic)

'To prove that Swig can do traditional Tuscany as well as modern Tuscany, here is a stunning, budget Chianti from an estate which they introduced to me a few years ago. With a bright, red cherry and cranberry nose leading the way it seems that this wine might be a little slender, but it blossoms on the palate and rounds out to reward the drinker with juicy blackberry notes and even a touch of lavender and liquorice for good measure. This is a beautiful wine and it is drinking perfectly already.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

Cotes du Rhone Prieure, Chateau Gigognan 2017 (Organic)

SPECIAL MONEY WEEK WINE CLUB PRICE FOR MARCH 'This powerful Rhône lacks something found in most – tannin. It is rather oddly missing, which is great news. Youthful, vibrant and stuffed with plum and mulberry fruit, there is a decent lick of acidity here which brings tension to the finish, but there is no austerity, dryness, astringency or oakiness. This makes Vignes du Prieuré a goddess in the glass with no hard edges and I would drink it with duck or venison for a beautiful combination. The holy grail of winemaking - this is both rich and sumptuous and light and delicate. How do they do it? We'll never know, but gosh are we happy to drink the end result! The nose is like a hug in wine form - autumnal fruits, nutmeg spice and a touch of pretty perfume. Domaine Terre des Chardons "Marginal" 2015

Picture this - a grotty disused sports hall-esque exhibition space 20 minutes out of Marseille, crammed full of organic winemakers, international buyers and a few weary, stained tooth members of team SWiG. Trust us, there's nothing glamorous about wine trade fairs. However, when you discover brilliant new wines, it makes it all worthwhile. May we introduce Terre des Chardons - the land of the thistles - authentic, organic wines from the Costieres de Nimes. After 30 years of producing vegetables, in 2000, owner Jerome decided to convert some of their apricot and fruit orchards to vineyards. From day one, they have been working in a biodynamic way, with Jerome stating, “it was the only way we wanted to go.” Despite being part of the Languedoc, these wines have somewhat of a Rhone character to them. These are the sort of wines you take a sniff of, and you are forced, like a magnet to take another - such perfume and poise. Eye opening wines! In fact, I think they might be the prettiest pair we have.

A blend of Carmenere, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon / 13% alc This is harmonious, restrained and very well balanced. Mas Cristine Rouge Cotes du Roussillon 2016

Our flagship red is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan. The Syrah and Grenache come from near the sea, while the Carignan ripens later, a bit further to the north. When first bottled, the Grenache dominates the nose with purity of fruit that can astonish. With a year and a bit in bottle, the varieties have integrated. The Syrah gives blueberry, and a hint of black olive. The Grenache offers black cherry and flower petal. The Carignan, only about 15% of the blend, gives earthy, rain-on-hot-asphalt notes (petrichor) and brings a bright, crunchy, sinewy acidity on the palate. This is drinking so well right now, and is truly a wine for all seasons. Chill it now, and enjoy that juicy crunch along with the dusty tannins. It’ll open with decanting. Save a case for colder times. That richness and ripeness of the south of France will prove perfect with game dishes, the grandest of roasts or even a warming stew. It’s incredibly well integrated at the moment, though the tannins will soften if you fancy sticking it away for longer. At the moment, though, you get both berry and stone fruit, plus some savoury, leather-tar-bacon notes. There’s even a bit of squid ink in there. The terroir is so close to Collioure, and still heavily influenced by the schist soils, that you get a tight structure and mineral backbone you don’t often find from wines in the south.

Spatburgunder Weiler Schlipf Weingut Claus Schneider Baden 2015

Look at the pricing of your average village-level Burgundy from a respectable domaine. You will be required to spend £20 upwards, often closer to £30. You could do that, but you could give this wine a go instead. I can almost guarantee that you will never look back. Considering the lush Pinot character - effortless smoky summer fruits and gamey, orangepeel and sandalwood notes - the beautiful balance and opulent texture this wine offers, frankly, it's a steal. 2015 was an especially warm year in Baden producing beautifully ripe fruit. This has translated to a an entry-level wine that is open and generous but easily capable of ageing too. Johannes told us he recently opened a bottle from 2008 that was drinking perfectly. This really is freakishly good-value. However many bottles you buy of this wine, it will be too few.
