Cruz de Piedra Garnacha 2015

Bright, ripe brambly fruit with soft notes of sweetly spiced cherry and liquorice. Very much quaffable on its own but there's a bit of structure to it as well, meaning its pleasures will be amplified with food. This is going to marry well with anything from a juicy medium-rare ribeye to a robust central-heating-for-the-soul winter stew. I opted to drink it with stewed beef cheek and buttery garlic mashed potato, and felt like the cat's miaow in consequence.

Syrah Laurence de Veyrac 2017

How many nice wines have you had at Pizza Express, ASK or the equivalent establishment in the last decade? Quite. As the wine is poured to check it I put on a brave face and say yes, thank you, that’s very nice in order not so as not to spoil the evening and what is sometimes a half decent pizza. But house wine, and for that matter pretty much every wine these places sell, is unacceptable for the money they charge us. This is what they should be serving. It is spot on. It’s an ideal wine to crack open anytime, but you can be proud to serve it to your fussy wine friends

Soli Pinot Noir, Miroglio,Thracian Valley 2015

Stick your nose in this and you get that mouthwatering, autumn leaves, smoky sous bois, minerally pinot perfume, wild strawberry, red cherry, orange rind, sandalwood-clove hints. The palate is mellow and supple, orange-inflected red berry fruit, hint of vanilla wood spice, sweetly suggestive mercurial pinot style all the way, autumnal with soft tannins and a fine backbone of acidity. Yet again, a really moreish, impressive pinot from Bulgaria. Hats off.

Autocarro No 27 2016

Red fruits with a hint of something darker, Reminiscent of good Chianti Classico - with plums, red cherries, and raspberries. The tannins are gentle but assert themselves somewhat on the finish, providing a firm grip that is at once rustic and pleasing. While certainly gluggable, it's not forgettable, and definitely warrants the odd pause of appreciation. Superb with summer barbecue fare, on its own, or with bigger, meatier dishes, this is a great red to have around in case of need. 33% Aragonez, 33% Touriga Nacional and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A deep purple in the glass, there's something undeniably juicy, bitter sweet chocolatey and clove studded fruit laden about this. Dark chocolate dipped orange, a hint of menthol with a lovely warm earthiness- think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy Autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a grilled Barnsley chop cooked with rosemary and some whole baked garlic cloves. A great take on a Cape style Bordeaux blend.

La Valona 12 Meses, Finca La Valona, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla 2009

Appreciating mature wine is about appreciating the mellow charms of age, not the raucous noise of youth. This Tempranillo from La Mancha is in full bloom, soft and comfortable in its skin, it offers a rich array of savoury flavours supported by ripe and moreish blackcurrant acidity that coaxes the palate into craving another sip.

Gamay 'Fleur de Printemps' Domaine de la Rochette 2017

This is a joyful gamay, unpretentious, juicy and easy drinking from Touraine, central Loire. A slight pepperiness and a perfume of violet delicately emerges from the glass. The Gamay grape, so famous in Beaujolais, provides in the Loire a cleaner and sharper style. The tannins here are soft and smooth, giving an extremely refreshing style - drink it slightly cooled to express more intensely its youthful fruit character. Perfect with friends, sharing some charcuterie and cheese.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo MAB, Abbazia di Propezzano 2017

We found it a class above most of the wine in the region - fresh and vibrant with a juicy more-ishness that earned Paolo a big star next to his name in our tasting booklet. Not smothered in oak, which was the trend in recent years. Rather, it's comfortable in its shoes a lovely daily drink with pasta and grilled vegetables, meats and every day food.

Atlantico Garnacha Jardin de Luculo 2013 (Organic)

Fresh, pure Grenache/Garnacha from high altitude vineyards in the beautiful region of Navarra. Surprisingly deep in colour for Spanish Garnacha; the Navarra style can often be targeted at creating a lighter wine, perhaps due to the abundance of big, powerful reds from the rest of Spain. Think Spain’s answer to Pinot Noir (not that it should be seen as a replacement for wonderful Pinot Noir in any way!). This wine is full of squashy black cherry and blueberry character, with a dusting of dark cocoa powder; also a hint of violets. Rich and opulent, yet somehow still bright and fresh, it has a lovely firm tannic grip, making it a great partner to darker meats, such as roast pork and crackling or beef wellington. 14%. Mas Brunet Cuvee du Mazet, Domaine de Brunet 2015

A mix of the regions 5 permitted grape varities, this is a slightly more fruit forward take on the style with soft brambly fruit dancing with some lighter strawberries and undercurrents of liquorice and cola cubes. Some tannin but overall soft, light, with an autumn leaf detail which, combined with the cola cube, is suggestive of new world pinot.

A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Last year, we asked Adi, more hopefully than expectantly, whether he would consider making a red Papegaai to complement his deliriously popular Papegaai white blend. And he did it. No demure, no delay, no cheeky Badenhorst mind games. It was almost frighteningly straight-forward. To top it off, the wine he came up with, a 100% Cinsault, was utterly lovely: bright, light, clean and crunchily fruity, just a joy to drink - another gold star for the bird man of Kalmoesfontein and many happy, sated Swiggers. If only life could always be this way...A week or so ago, with bated breath, we had our first taste of the second vintage and, joy of joys, the man's gone and done it again!

Corbieres, Chateau de Durfort 2015

Comes across like a soft, ripe Bordeaux. Mocha notes, baking spices, vanilla and sous bois over dark, glossy cassis, creamy blueberry, strawberry compote and - after all, why not? - a burst of sweet, ripe blackberries. Now it's dark, smoky plum, liquorice and a hint of cough drop. That voluptuousness on the nose anticipates its satin texture. The tannins are very fine, more cocoa and sous bois, giving a delicious, moreish, bitter-savoury contrast to that sweet ripe fruit. It's a flawlessly harmonious blend. The texture is ethereal and overall the sense of balance is just very, very pleasing. Concentrated but not remotely heavy. Quaffable, even.

Cotes du Rhone 'Les Clapas', Domaine Saint Amant 2016

Prettily floral – violets – with peppery soft fruit. Plenty of regional typicity here. Delicate and spicy with a little grainy tannin. A great value CDR. This is about delicacy and nuances rather than power, coming from a terroir much cooler than low lying vineyards. There is also no oak used on this wine. It is for drinking now. Drink with light summer food, barbeques, rabbit, chicken or lamb scented with herbs, sausages, pasta. This is beautifully made by Camille Nosworthy an architect who fell in love with making wine. It’s a 3.5 hectare vineyard of chalk and clay around the village of Suzette at 500 to 620m in the area of Beaumes de Venise in the spectacular Dentelles de Monmirail. These high vineyards and poor soil make the wine so different from those of the Rhone on the valley floor. Saint-Amant’s Les Clapas is not about weight; it’s about perfume, aromatics and vivacity.

Chianti Rufina 'Cedro' Lavacchio 2016 (Organic)

'To prove that Swig can do traditional Tuscany as well as modern Tuscany, here is a stunning, budget Chianti from an estate which they introduced to me a few years ago. With a bright, red cherry and cranberry nose leading the way it seems that this wine might be a little slender, but it blossoms on the palate and rounds out to reward the drinker with juicy blackberry notes and even a touch of lavender and liquorice for good measure. Rote Kuvee Groszer Wein 2015

"Coming from Austria’s Burgenland, this handmade organic wine was discovered and promoted in the UK by Robin Davis. Primarily made from the Blaufränkisch grape, it is the second most popular red wine variety there. Owner Matthias Krön is so sure of the quality of his wines that he confidently puts them up against many of the leading wine producers in Bordeaux, the Rhone and Barolo. Despite its Baroque label, it is made in a modern style and given that 2015 was a textbook vintage, it will easily last for another decade." Bruce Palling, The Week

Mas Cristine Rouge Cotes du Roussillon 2016

Our flagship red is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan. The Syrah and Grenache come from near the sea, while the Carignan ripens later, a bit further to the north. When first bottled, the Grenache dominates the nose with purity of fruit that can astonish. With a year and a bit in bottle, the varieties have integrated. The Syrah gives blueberry, and a hint of black olive. The Grenache offers black cherry and flower petal. The Carignan, only about 15% of the blend, gives earthy, rain-on-hot-asphalt notes (petrichor) and brings a bright, crunchy, sinewy acidity on the palate. This is drinking so well right now, and is truly a wine for all seasons. Chill it now, and enjoy that juicy crunch along with the dusty tannins. It’ll open with decanting. Save a case for colder times. That richness and ripeness of the south of France will prove perfect with game dishes, the grandest of roasts or even a warming stew. It’s incredibly well integrated at the moment, though the tannins will soften if you fancy sticking it away for longer. At the moment, though, you get both berry and stone fruit, plus some savoury, leather-tar-bacon notes. There’s even a bit of squid ink in there. The terroir is so close to Collioure, and still heavily influenced by the schist soils, that you get a tight structure and mineral backbone you don’t often find from wines in the south.

Hortulanus Tuscany 2011

Some words from winemaker Toby Owen about the special location that these vines are grown in. "Immediately in front of the vineyard is the highest and nearest of the mountains, Monte Amiata (1734m). Its high slopes of dense deciduous forest have a cooling effect and a pronounced diurnal temperature excursion, especially during the period of ripening: In late summer at sunset, chilled air from the summit of the mountain starts descending into our vineyards cooling the maturing grapes and preserving acidity. These conditions tend to provide us with grapes that are rich, not only in sugars and flavour, but also polyphenols (tannin, colour) and acidity giving naturally concentrated, firm, elegantly structured wines that can age with grace while also drinking well when relatively young. The protective presence of the graceful wooded massif of Monte Amiata lends perfect growing conditions to the patchwork of vines, olives, cherry and chestnut nestled in the high tributaries of Tuscany's great Val d'Orcia. Enchanting and remote, it's a place where man and nature live in harmony. Birds, mammals, plants and insects abound in a glorious springtime riot of colour, texture and sound. Just as did the vineyards of the Etruscan culture 2000 years before, our scattered plots of vines take their nourishment from the fresh mountain springs and the vital soils of limestone and lava heaved up and spewed out by Amiata's tumultuous volcanic past. Protected by the altitude and cool wooded slopes from the excesses of summer rain and heat, our grapes ripen slowly to reach perfect maturity and bestowing us with vibrant wines of intense fruit, elegant acidity and sweet tannin."

Planella Joan d'Anguera, Montsant 2016

The first thing that hits you on the nose is the purity of the fruit. Like they've squeezed a blackcurrant into it, extracting the very essence of the fruit. Dancing over the top are violets in raspberry shoes. From that pure and pretty nose, that palate plunges you into spicy, smokey, bramble fruit layers of deliciousness with a core of minerality that would put even the most flinty Chablis to shame. This is a thing of beauty and joy and will give you shivers of delight for at least the next five to eight years.

Spatburgunder Weiler Schlipf Weingut Claus Schneider Baden 2015

Look at the pricing of your average village-level Burgundy from a respectable domaine. You will be required to spend £20 upwards, often closer to £30. You could do that, but you could give this wine a go instead. I can almost guarantee that you will never look back. Considering the lush Pinot character - effortless smoky summer fruits and gamey, orangepeel and sandalwood notes - the beautiful balance and opulent texture this wine offers, frankly, it's a steal. 2015 was an especially warm year in Baden producing beautifully ripe fruit. This has translated to a an entry-level wine that is open and generous but easily capable of ageing too. Johannes told us he recently opened a bottle from 2008 that was drinking perfectly. This really is freakishly good-value. However many bottles you buy of this wine, it will be too few.

Yantra Tenuta Sette Cieli 2016

'My wife Amelia, who is herself in the wine business, tipped off Swig to this epic estate and they grabbed the portfolio of incredible wines with greedy hands. Made high up in the hills overlooking Bolgheri, where fat Super-Tuscans lazily ripen in the haze, the wines from Sette Cieli combine vivacity and intensity with exquisite accuracy. This is my favourite newcomer to the Tuscan scene and this Merlot / Cabernet blend sees no oak whatsoever. It retains scintillating freshness and drive thank to its lofty, breezy position and also the ultra-organic attitude of their fearless team. Rully Chaponniere, Domaine Ninot 2014

Burgundy vignerons and tonneliers since the 14th century, the Ninot family have done more than most to establish the quality wine credentials of a region that has been described as the 'undernourished country cousin' of the Côte d'Or. Sister and brother team Erell and Flavien have run the show since 2005, Erell making the wine while her brother maintains the vineyards. This is a hugely respected winemaking family and one central to the establishment of the Rully appellation as we now know it. Their grandfather, René, in particular, is regarded as a trailblazer in the region. The current generation remain totally committed to the finest expression of their Chalonnaise terroir, led by the formidable talent of winemaker Erell, who won the Trophée de Jeune Talent, Burgundy's best young winemaker award, just three years after she and her brother took over the estate from their father, Pierre-Marie. Latterly, France's top wine publication, La Revue du Vin de France, presented her with the Coup du Coeur - one of its most coveted winemaking awards.

Spatburgunder Weiler Schlipf CS, Weingut Claus Schneider, Baden 2014

A wine with the dew still on it. Lovely youthful red cherry, strawberry and blackberry fruit and a subtle wisp of smoke, dried orangepeel, sandalwood, gamey, new leather (Johannes's CS range is partly matured in new barriques) notes emerging with time in the glass. I'm transported to Gevrey tasting this. On the palate, the tannins are present but fine enough for the wine to be very enjoyable now. Laying down would be wise, however. The wine is structured but subtly so, with a firm backbone of acidity - from a combination of the limestone soil and the cooler 2014 vintage - suggest ageability of ten years at least. Johannes management of the flavour profiles and the clear delineation of quality levels is remarkable.
