Cruz de Piedra Garnacha 2015

Bright, ripe brambly fruit with soft notes of sweetly spiced cherry and liquorice. Very much quaffable on its own but there's a bit of structure to it as well, meaning its pleasures will be amplified with food. This is going to marry well with anything from a juicy medium-rare ribeye to a robust central-heating-for-the-soul winter stew. I opted to drink it with stewed beef cheek and buttery garlic mashed potato, and felt like the cat's miaow in consequence.

Stick your nose in this and you get that mouthwatering, autumn leaves, smoky sous bois, minerally pinot perfume, wild strawberry, red cherry, orange rind, sandalwood-clove hints. The palate is mellow and supple, orange-inflected red berry fruit, hint of vanilla wood spice, sweetly suggestive mercurial pinot style all the way, autumnal with soft tannins and a fine backbone of acidity. Yet again, a really moreish, impressive pinot from Bulgaria. Hats off.

A deep purple in the glass, there's something undeniably juicy, bitter sweet chocolatey and clove studded fruit laden about this. It is said that the first sign of maturity is discovering that the volume knob also turns to the left. Equally, appreciating mature wine is about appreciating the mellow charms of age, not the raucous noise of youth. This Tempranillo from La Mancha is in full bloom, soft and comfortable in its skin, it offers a rich array of savoury flavours supported by ripe and moreish blackcurrant acidity that coaxes the palate into craving another sip. Medium- to full-bodied with fine-grained woody tannins and a sense of relaxed opulence, it’s a wonderfully satisfying red that goes perfectly with roast beef. 13.5% alc.

Atlantico Garnacha Jardin de Luculo 2013

Fresh, pure Grenache/Garnacha from high altitude vineyards in the beautiful region of Navarra. Surprisingly deep in colour for Spanish Garnacha; the Navarra style can often be targeted at creating a lighter wine, perhaps due to the abundance of big, powerful reds from the rest of Spain. Think Spain’s answer to Pinot Noir (not that it should be seen as a replacement for wonderful Pinot Noir in any way!). This wine is full of squashy black cherry and blueberry character, with a dusting of dark cocoa powder; also a hint of violets. Rich and opulent, yet somehow still bright and fresh, it has a lovely firm tannic grip, making it a great partner to darker meats, such as roast pork and crackling or beef wellington. 14%. Alheit Flotsam and Jetsam Cinsault 2016

This is one of our most wonderful, delicious wines. It's blissfully light but full of character, with the lifted red fruit aromas. It could almost be Pinot Noir, with an earthiness and rusticity from Cinsault that gives it some oomph. It's excellent red to go with fish, but will also be brilliant with meats. We're saving some for Christmas, as it will be superb with turkey as well as cold cuts.

A rich, inky colour, this wine jumps out of the glass at you with excitement and flavour. The nose is full of dark plums, fresh, juicy blackcurrants and cherry cordial. This lifted by savoury spice, a splash of tamarind and a touch of mint. The palate is surprisingly light with medium tannins, despite its full colour. Fresh and concentrated autumnal fruits predominate - more hedgerow blackcurrants and damsons - and just a hint of spice.

From the 2013 vintage, back when this cuvée's name took a 'Le'. Ah, great times. This lovely number is a little more concentrated than the 2014 and has been aged in oak barrels for 13 months. One gulp and I'm pedalling under the sun-dappled shade of the plane trees along the Canal-du-Midi, with a baguette, some rillettes and a bottle of this in my pannier for fuel.

Domaine Terre des Chardons "Marginal" 2014

Marginal is their 80% Syrah, 20% Grenache blend. Beautiful herby, spicy Syrah - cassis, dark chocolate dipped orange peel with concentrated black fruits, a whisp of herbs, tobacco, rocks and garrigue. The freshness is incredible, one wonders how it delivers such delicacy and precision with such a deep and intense core. No oak used here - in fact, the only barrels you'll see in the winery are there for ornamental reasons. Nothing mucked about with these wines - they're very low intervention with the smallest amounts of sulphur used in fermentation and before bottling. Picking, racking and bottling are all carried out in accordance with the phases of the moon. Perhaps that why you get such a wonderful expression of the fruit, and such lifted, floating aromas.

This wine brims over with aromas of juicy sour cherries, plum and blackberries, accented with a crushed black pepper note and a hint of a game. On the palate, there's really excellent structure, that classic Eisenberg spiciness and a concentrated yet fine dark fruit profile. Plenty of presence. Mouthwatering with a distinct minerality, giving a lingering impression of mineral salts. Compelling, quaffable and a superb introduction to a very special grape. I can't believe this quality of wine exists but we hadn't come across it before. The aromas and flavours draw you in. They are so intriguing. The wine has a lovely feel, slightly inky, something I associate with very good wines indeed. I was genuinely moved tasting and drinking this. I've never tried a wine quite like that has such satisfying all round aromas and flavours; all my favourite wines blended into one. You can sip it all night long and not get bored. It also keeps for several days once opened, which is super handy.

BK Wines Cult Syrah, Lobethal, Adelaide Hills 2013

Deep and inky nose with black olive tapenade, toasted blueberries, wet stone, flint and pepper. Brooding. Decant this. Maybe twice. The palate certainly sits firmly on the Syrah side of the Shiraz/Syrah divide. The texture is sinewy, with cocoa-laced tannins wrapped taught around those black olives and, blueberries. Both dusty and fresh, this is a bottle of contradictions that reveals something new with every glass; every sip. Violently decant twice – let it breathe deep for it has quite the story to tell. 14.5% drink now - 2022

Riposte 'The Dagger' Pinot Noir by Tim Knappstein 2016

Darned delectable! This has a lovely rich nose, packed full of fresh, ripe cherries that ooze their juice as you bite into them and unctuous raspberries. This fruit salad is lifted by a touch of green peppercorns and just the faintest hint of cardamon and coriander. The palate continues this theme with lots of bright cranberry and raspberry, a hint of blackcurrant skin and black pepper on the finish.

Spatburgunder Weiler Schlipf, Weingut Claus Schneider, Baden 2015

Look at the pricing of your average village-level Burgundy from a respectable domaine. You will be required to spend £20 upwards, often closer to £30. You could do that, but you could give this wine a go instead. I can almost guarantee that you will never look back. Considering the lush Pinot character - effortless smoky summer fruits and gamey, orangepeel and sandalwood notes - the beautiful balance and opulent texture this wine offers, frankly, it's a steal. 2015 was an especially warm year in Baden producing beautifully ripe fruit. This has translated to a an entry-level wine that is open and generous but easily capable of ageing too. Johannes told us he recently opened a bottle from 2008 that was drinking perfectly. This really is freakishly good-value. However many bottles you buy of this wine, it will be too few.

While Barolo may be the king of Piedmont, its little brother, Barbera, cavorts around the region like a playboy prince, constantly reinventing itself and turning up in a variety of unexpected disguises. It’s a fiendishly difficult grape to pin down and we have tasted it in all it forms, from the very dark and brooding, to the light and ethereal. This one clearly looks up to its big brother, displaying similar flavour characteristics of warm plum skins, loose tea, leather, kirsch, tomato leaves and cherry wood. Where Barolo has muscle and power, this capers more nimbly, with its naturally high acidity carrying those delicious autumnal flavours within a lighter and more forgiving frame. 14% alc. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet, this isn't a Priorat that beats you around the chops with its alcohol and tannin. No, this Priorat gently envelops you in its blackcurranty hug. Its alluring, fresh, dark fruits draw you in, tinged with notes of nutmeg and vanilla. The palate completes this assault of loveliness with big, ripe blackberries picked straight from the hedgerow, that stain your lips black as you squelch into them. This is lifted by more grown up notes of buttery, lightly smoked oak that open into sun-dried fruits and more of those wonderful baking spices and cocoa.

Domaine Grand Ormeau, Lalande de Pomerol 2014

Lovely ripe plum and blackcurrant with cocoa dust, tobacco leaf, a touch of sandlewood. Very appealing. The palate is a fantastic contrast of those bright plum and currant fruits wrapped in dark secondaries – cigar box, dark chocolate and a bit of pipe tobacco. A producer just over the border from Pomerol, making wine, now with the help of the former winemaker of Petrus, Yannick Reyrel. Smooth for Bordeaux. Mull over it in a decanter and you can keep it for another 4 or 5 years, and get the tertiary flavours of mature Bordeaux.
