FULL BOTTLES. Vanilla, crème caramel, acacia honey, apricot, oak, earth, the tiniest hint of the fresher aromatics of Semillon. Lovely viscosity, almost like Sauternes jelly, but it's not rich. What overwhelmingly comes across is the balance, making it sit in the mouth beautifully and giving it a long lingering finish. This balancing acidity will help it age for years, although it is truly beautiful now.
The 2001 of this wine came out ahead in a blind tasting by sommeliers of the legendary Yquem 2001. The 2009 is a is another great vintage. Is is made by hand-picking literally grape by grape (grain par grain).Chateau La Betrande is in Cadillac in Bordeaux, across the river from Sauternes. They only make 'Summum' in the best vintages, when the conditions are right for botrytis.
The 2013 exudes succulent, spiced aromas on the nose. Moringa flowers, crystallised stem ginger, baked apricots and frangipani. The palate is bold yet silky smooth – honeyed, with some baking spice, tarte tatin and vanilla . It will only take on more of a profile with time.
