Mercurey Vieilles Vignes, Chateau du Santenay 2016

touch of oak. It is hugely enjoyable. The moment I lifted it to my nose it was full of joy. It's no surprise it came top of Best Value Burgundy Tasting in Decanter. It totally delivers. Lots of Burgundy is quiet and needs time but this is perfect for serving now, although this will keep improving over 3 - 5 years. With dinner parties and when you need something gorgeous and grand but not at a grand price, this is perfect.

Spatburgunder Weiler Schlipf CS, Weingut Claus Schneider, Baden 2014

A wine with the dew still on it. Lovely youthful red cherry, strawberry and blackberry fruit and a subtle wisp of smoke, dried orangepeel, sandalwood, gamey, new leather (Johannes's CS range is partly matured in new barriques) notes emerging with time in the glass. I'm transported to Gevrey tasting this. On the palate, the tannins are present but fine enough for the wine to be very enjoyable now. Laying down would be wise, however. The wine is structured but subtly so, with a firm backbone of acidity - from a combination of the limestone soil and the cooler 2014 vintage - suggest ageability of ten years at least. Johannes management of the flavour profiles and the clear delineation of quality levels is remarkable.

Keermont Merlot 2015

This has some serious pizazz and sparkle – just the perfect way to amp up your Christmas fun! Effortlessly enticing on the nose it is packed full of rhubarb and deliciously concentrated raspberries with just a hint of smoky spice. On the palate expect more of that bright fruit and a gentle smoked pepper edge with a feather soft finish. Don’t put up with over-oaked, syrupy excuses for Rioja, instead reinvent your Christmas hunk of beef with this juicy, jiggle inducing and totally fresh version of everyone’s go to Christmas tipple.

Chorey-les-Beaune 'Les Bons Ores', Maratray-Dubreuil 2016

For some of us, there can be no Christmas without a good drop of Burgundy. We would simply deny its reality. Here at Swig we put a lot of effort into choosing the right one for our Christmas list. It’s not just about choosing a great wine, it’s about choosing a great wine that represents fantastic, siren-wailingly good value. Thanks to the great vintage conditions in this under-appreciated appellation, this is one the best-value wines in Burgundy, a true Holy Grail wine. Given its increasingly insane pricing, red Burgundy is not something we often recommend. For the Maratray-Dubreuil Les Bons Ores 2016, we make an exception.

Maison Blanche Montagne St Emilion 2014

After much research and tasting we’ve found this astonishingly classy Bordeaux from the hills overlooking St Emilion and Pomerol. We love its classical flavour of pencil lead, cedar and black fruits. There is something a bit like a Medoc wine that comes from the Cabernet Franc in the blend with Merlot (like Cheval Blanc) but also undeniably charming and drinkable as St Emilion should be. Being organic makes it even better. It tastes so pure. A really good Christmas day drop.

Barbera d'Alba 'Vigna Pozzo' Renato Corino 2016

In this Barbera there is beauty and generosity. It lights up your palate in the way that Renato’s smile lights up a room. It's known by his importers around the world as the best value wine from his cellar and it's always the first to disappear. It can impress just as well as any Barolo.

A A Badenhorst Family Red 2015

The 2015 represents a milestone for this wine - the 10th vintage Adi has made - and probably the best so far. You can overlook the Family Red in its youth but Adi's Family Red ages really well. It takes time to open up. So decant it and be patient.

Savage Red Blend 2016

81% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, carefully selected "with love" from vineyards at altitude and with close to the coast. A 94-pointer for both Greg Sherwood MW and Christian Eedes. Sherwood describes it as “the most classically proportioned of all the Savage reds”, with a “beautifully complex nose of perfumed dried roses, black berry fruits, grilled herbs, cured meats, garrigue, fynbos and dusty granitic minerality”. Pretty much on the money, we think. The palate is full with fine tannin, soft spices and juicy cranberry and strawberry along with hints of dark berry fruits. For a slightly alternative Christmas meal, you might try pairing this with slow-cooked beef brisket with star anise and chilli. Yummm – with three ems.

Keermont Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

First time they have done a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon now that the vines are older (25 years). Winemaker's note: Rich crimson red colour. The nose is a complex mix of savoury notes: crushed herbs, violets, sandalwood, leather and some lovely bright red fruit. The palate is fine and yet powerful. Lush spicy red fruit is complimented by blueberry and bramble notes. Powerful tight-knit tannin and a very linear acidity afford the wine a long succulent finish. Drink 2017-2030.

Chateauneuf du Pape L'Or de Line 2015

Can’t have Christmas without CNDP. Just can’t be. No sir. This year we’ve pulled a stonker from our Santa’s sack of goodies. From the generous, ripe and ready 2015 vintage, this organic Chateauneuf is certainly worthy of a place on your Christmas dinner table. Perhaps winemaker Gerard Jacumin’s secret ingredient is the Pink Clairette, a rare mutation of Clairette which adds a flavour of roses to the Grenache/Syrah-dominant blend, giving elegance to the palate and fragrance to the nose. A full-bodied Rhone red but with the finest of tannins and a rather impressive degree of elegance given the relatively hot, dry vintage.

Casal Santa Maria Ramisco, Colares 2006 - 50cl

This is one for the wine geeks out there. Glorious, frankly quite mad Portuguese red from 'the most ridiculous wine region in the World'. Think vineyards not more than 300m from the Atlantic ocean, in the sand dunes, on the westernmost tip of Continental Europe. No vine should survive here, but somehow a small number of Ramisco (red) and Malvasia de Colares (white) do, and they produce some insanely brilliant wines.

Indaco, Tenuta Sette Cieli, Tuscany 2014

Indaco is from Tenuta Sette Cieli, an up and coming producer on the next hillside to the famous Sassicaia. It is a blend of the Bordeaux varieties. They are just out of the Bolgheri zone, on the Tuscan coast, South of Livorno, but if Bolgheri was re-drawn, they would almost certainly be within it. It is higher altitude than all but the highest of Sassicaia’s original vineyard, so the style tends to be a bit fresher than some of the more typical Bolgheri wines. They are a producer to look out in the future. They share the viticulture team with Ornellaia.

Clos du Clocher, Pomerol 2011

Truly gorgeous Pomerol from a producer next to Trotanoy, Vieux Chateau Certan and La Fleur Petrus who has stepped up their quality and is now making wines of very high quality but it's still available at a very fair price. Gorgeous ripe aromas, cassis, plums and chocolate and smart wine-soaked oak, open knit, generous and classy but not too much; full and smooth and mouth-filling on the palate. This is divine wine that is very much to be enjoyed and drunk now. Of course, you can cellar it too, for 5 to 10 more years, but there is so much to enjoy now and in the next few years. Made from 77.5% Merlot / 22.5% Cabernet franc. 14.3% alc.

Saurwein Nom Pinot Noir 2017

Goose. Need we say more? Oh all right then. Pinot Noir and goose. The Ur gastronomic combo of the festive season, the quintessence of Christmas. Jessica Saurwein’s Nom Pinot grows more assured with every new vintage. Cotes de Nuits in style, from the mighty Kaaimansgaat vineyard in Elandskloof, this is from the fiendishly dry 2017 vintage, which has given this wonderfully complex pinot intense aromatics, hints of orange rind, concentrated red berry and plum fruit, and a lick of wood spice. Gorgeous on its own, nigh-on transcendent with a crispy-skinned goose and cranberry sauce.

Keep Carignan, California 2015

With dark fruits, olives, herbs, balsamic and something Italian - this is a super find. Starts with a lovely fragrance, a hint of rose and brambles - not heavy but signs of depth. As it opens in the glass (or decant it) you begin to get dark fruits, nicoise black olives, herbs and balsamic. It develops and fleshes out becoming like a lovely Southern Rhone crossed with slightly Italian notes. This is a unique, truly fabulous wine. Jack Robert's mentor is Steve Matthiason, one of the big names in California who is encouraging a move a way from the big rich wines to more traditional styles.

Timo Mayer 'The Doktor' Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley 2017

This Pinot Noir will take you to Cloud Nine! It's so very beautiful, silky, textured. It's one of the best New World Pinot Noirs we've ever come across. Finesse and class with amazing aromatics and flavours. "Ludicrously delicious, fine feeling wine here, savouriness to the fore, structure and bones, delicate yet with tension to the max. Renato Corino Barolo Arborina 2013

An amazing cru that sits a few metres to the east of Rocche and just above it on the hillside. You get, from the slightly more easterly exposure compared to the fully south exposed Rocche, a slightly more lifted aroma with brighter aromatics and a hint more savoury and spice. This is exceptional wine that ages really, really well. I enjoy drinking Arborina on release, but it continues to reveal more complexity, depth and class over the years. Probably at it's peak 2022-2025.

Amarone Monte Santoccio Nicola Ferrari 2013

Using grapes that have been partially dried on mats from harvest until January and aged for 30 months in French and American 500l oak barrels, we think this is one of the most complex wines produced in Italy. It is not like the massive more porty versions of Amarone, which can also be lovely, rather it shows real elegance. As it ages you really get a sense the terroir and the grapes of Valpolicella, which can be masked by the sweetness and power of the more powerful, 'modern' styles.

Barolo Rocche dell Annunziata Renato Corino 2013

Considered a Grand Cru of the commune of La Morra. It’s completely South facing and is typically the fullest and ripest tasting of Renato Corino’s wines. It’s usually delicious when young, but this is a bit more reticent and closed than in some years. I think that’s no bad thing and a reflection of using less new oak than normal. It will develop in complexity and richness over the years. It really does need another 4 or 5 years to open up, but it’s special and a great wine from Renato, from this excellent vintage.

Yabby Lake Single Block Release, Block 1 Pinot Noir 2015

James Suckling - Published on 11 Jan 2017 A lighter rendering, but one that still has inherent power and assetiveness. Yabby Lake, Block 6 Pinot Noir 2015

James Suckling - Published on 11 Jan 2017 This has a sense of brooding depth about it and is the most powerful and imposing of the three 2015 single-block releases from Yabby Lake. It has darker cherry and blueberry aromas and some cassis, too. The palate's energetic and really surges in with plenty of fleshy red- and purple-cherry fruits. The tannins wrap and compress before the finish expands upwards. Give this time; best from 2019. Raing: 96

Scipio Tenuta Sette Cieli 2013

This is a micro-cuvée only made in the best years – just 300 cases – to see what they can do with 100% Cabernet Franc. It’s pretty damned lovely – like Indaco, it needs more time – and you can tell by it being open for 24/48 hours that it’s got excellent potential, and it will just get better and better. It’s a bit more ‘right-bank’ St-Emilion style perhaps than the ‘left-bank’ Médoc. Like Indaco, it’s also another very special wine.

Sami-Odi 'Mahé & Ribo' 2015, Barossa Valley, Australia

A word from winemaker Fraser: "A composition of our most poignant and superlative casks and a birth year celebration of our cheeky and joyous twin boys Mahé & Ribo - 15 Burgundian pieces. 79 week elevage. Bottles were filled without filtration, fining or sparging (the removal of naturally occurring oxygen & C02) and all transfer’s were completed via gravity prior to bottling. A decadent wine which feels both lavish and congenial and whilst immediately offering enjoyment is pleading for some peaceful cellar time. It should be fascinating to ponder over the coming decades." 4398 bottles were filled

Brunello di Montalcino Cupano 2011 (Organic)

As good as the profound 2010 was, this incredible 2011 has us utterly smitten. We cannot remember a Brunello tasting this delicious this young. It is a triumph of a wine. It is perhaps the best example we've tasted of the late Henri Jayer's impact on Lionel's winemaking. Though the fruit and character are all Montalcino, there's an elegant soul of great Burgundy that runs throughout. For those that bought the amazing 2010, this is one to crack into while you're waiting for that to hit its peak. "The prettiest Brunello I've ever tasted. I had the opportunity to taste several Brunello di Montalcinos from 2011, and to a bottle they paled in comparison to this tremendous wine from Cupano." - Richard Bray, Swig Wines
