Spatburgunder Weiler Schlipf CS, Weingut Claus Schneider, Baden 2014

A wine with the dew still on it. Lovely youthful red cherry, strawberry and blackberry fruit and a subtle wisp of smoke, dried orangepeel, sandalwood, gamey, new leather (Johannes's CS range is partly matured in new barriques) notes emerging with time in the glass. I'm transported to Gevrey tasting this. On the palate, the tannins are present but fine enough for the wine to be very enjoyable now. Laying down would be wise, however. The wine is structured but subtly so, with a firm backbone of acidity - from a combination of the limestone soil and the cooler 2014 vintage - suggest ageability of ten years at least. Johannes management of the flavour profiles and the clear delineation of quality levels is remarkable.

For some of us, there can be no Christmas without a good drop of Burgundy. We would simply deny its reality. Here at Swig we put a lot of effort into choosing the right one for our Christmas list. It’s not just about choosing a great wine, it’s about choosing a great wine that represents fantastic, siren-wailingly good value. Thanks to the great vintage conditions in this under-appreciated appellation, this is one the best-value wines in Burgundy, a true Holy Grail wine. Given its increasingly insane pricing, red Burgundy is not something we often recommend. For the Maratray-Dubreuil Les Bons Ores 2016, we make an exception.

touch of oak. It is hugely enjoyable. The moment I lifted it to my nose it was full of joy. It's no surprise it came top of Best Value Burgundy Tasting in Decanter. It totally delivers. Lots of Burgundy is quiet and needs time but this is perfect for serving now, although this will keep improving over 3 - 5 years. With dinner parties and when you need something gorgeous and grand but not at a grand price, this is perfect.

Maison Blanche Montagne St Emilion 2014

After much research and tasting we’ve found this astonishingly classy Bordeaux from the hills overlooking St Emilion and Pomerol. We love its classical flavour of pencil lead, cedar and black fruits. There is something a bit like a Medoc wine that comes from the Cabernet Franc in the blend with Merlot (like Cheval Blanc) but also undeniably charming and drinkable as St Emilion should be. Being organic makes it even better. It tastes so pure.

Savage Thief In The Night 2017

'The wine shows a real individuality and personality with bright fragrant violet perfume, sappy spicy peppery raspberry and redcurrant confit complexity, hints of sun raisined cranberries, cured bresaola, boiled raspberry sweets and wild strawberry. The palate weight is soft and sensual, combining the best of both Grenache and Cinsault to form an impressively harmonious, silky soft sappy red blend. The wine seems to grow exponentially in the glass, unfurling and unravelling to reveal layers of strawberry jam, raspberry compote and Turkish delight all framed with bright crystalline acids that really amplify the wines purity, minerality and sense of place. Such a pretty wine with the sleekest and most polished tannins and a mellow fruit intensity. Despite its eminent drinkability in youth, this is no frivolous ‘vin de soif’ and could just maybe, over time, acquire a similar cult following to that of Duncan’s excellent Cinsault-dominated Follow The Line red blend from Darling. The 2015 represents a milestone for this wine - the 10th vintage Adi has made - and probably the best so far. You can overlook the Family Red in its youth but Adi's Family Red ages really well. It takes time to open up. So decant it and be patient.

A A Badenhorst Family Red 2016

'The 2016 Family Red Blend is a blend of 71% Shiraz, 13% Grenache, 11% Cinsault and 5% Tinta Barocca. It has a very pure bouquet, quite floral and intense, with dark cherries, black plum, warm gravel and light truffle scents, the 80% whole bunch completely disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grippy tannin. There is good backbone here, quite dense but well defined with a chalky, slight austere finish, partly because Adi now undertakes more aging in concrete. Give this a couple of years in bottle.' Savage Red Blend 2016

81% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, carefully selected "with love" from vineyards at altitude and with close to the coast. A 94-pointer for both Greg Sherwood MW and Christian Eedes. Sherwood describes it as “the most classically proportioned of all the Savage reds”, with a “beautifully complex nose of perfumed dried roses, black berry fruits, grilled herbs, cured meats, garrigue, fynbos and dusty granitic minerality”. Pretty much on the money, we think. The palate is full with fine tannin, soft spices and juicy cranberry and strawberry along with hints of dark berry fruits. For a slightly alternative Christmas meal, you might try pairing this with slow-cooked beef brisket with star anise and chilli. Yummm – with three ems.

Keermont Estate Reserve 2013

36% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 6% Syrah, 4% Petit Verdot from a selection of sites between 250 and 400 metres above sea level on the mountainous slopes above the Keermont cellar in the valley between the Keermont and Helderberg mountain ranges. This stunning blend spends nearly two years in oak and two years in bottle prior to release. It will keep for many a year but is looking superb; cranberries, a touch of sandalwood, cherry clafoutis and bruised herbs.

St Joseph 'Petit Pere' Aymeric Paillard 2015

The vineyards are near Tournon, opposite Hermitage. Aymeric Paillard worked at Delas, where he converted their Hermitage vineyard to organic, and did some work for Stephane Ogier, prior to finding a 4 hectare vineyard he farms organically. Concentrated, fresh and mineral, with taut compact fruit. There is super tight blackcurrant, licorice, savoury wood and garrigue notes and a hint of pepper. Beautiful, fine, old school style.

Can’t have Christmas without CNDP. Just can’t be. No sir. This year we’ve pulled a stonker from our Santa’s sack of goodies. From the generous, ripe and ready 2015 vintage, this organic Chateauneuf is certainly worthy of a place on your Christmas dinner table. Perhaps winemaker Gerard Jacumin’s secret ingredient is the Pink Clairette, a rare mutation of Clairette which adds a flavour of roses to the Grenache/Syrah-dominant blend, giving elegance to the palate and fragrance to the nose. A full-bodied Rhone red but with the finest of tannins and a rather impressive degree of elegance given the relatively hot, dry vintage.

A A Badenhorst Sk'windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca 2017

'The 2017 Sk’Windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca comes from a seven-hectare unpronounceable vineyard whose name means “gusty wind,” planted in 1962, when this Portuguese variety was becoming increasingly popular in the Capelands. It has a very pure blackberry and briar bouquet with hints of pressed iris and later, just a hint of canned prune. The palate is medium-bodied with black plum, blackberry and light white pepper notes, intriguingly almost Barolo-like in tannic structure, with gentle grip on the finish. Indaco, Tenuta Sette Cieli, Tuscany 2014 (available in wood when 6 bottles)

This is becoming not just a top Tuscan wine but an Italian first growth, but still really is a wine for those in the know. A Bordeaux blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The pedigree is there in the vineyard. From the next hillside over, you can see Sassicaia’s legendary first vineyard, and Ornellaia, where they make Massetto. Tenuta Sette Cieli also sits above the famous vineyard Ca’Marcanda of Angelo Gaja!. But the best thing is the price remains sane as it’s not actually in the Bolgheri appellation, as no one thought when they drew the Bolgheri boundary that someone would be crazy enough plant above the woods, that are above Gaja’s vineyard. But they have!

Jessica Saurwein’s Nom Pinot grows more assured with every new vintage. Cotes de Nuits in style, from the mighty Kaaimansgaat vineyard in Elandskloof, this is from the fiendishly dry 2017 vintage, which has given this wonderfully complex pinot intense aromatics, hints of orange rind, concentrated red berry and plum fruit, and a lick of wood spice. Gorgeous on its own, nigh-on transcendent with a crispy-skinned goose and cranberry sauce.

Renato Corino Barolo Arborina 2013

An amazing cru that sits a few metres to the east of Rocche and just above it on the hillside. You get, from the slightly more easterly exposure compared to the fully south exposed Rocche, a slightly more lifted aroma with brighter aromatics and a hint more savoury and spice. This is exceptional wine that ages really, really well. I enjoy drinking Arborina on release, but it continues to reveal more complexity, depth and class over the years. Probably at it's peak 2022-2025.

Amarone Monte Santoccio Nicola Ferrari 2013

Using grapes that have been partially dried on mats from harvest until January and aged for 30 months in French and American 500l oak barrels, we think this is one of the most complex wines produced in Italy. It is not like the massive more porty versions of Amarone, which can also be lovely, rather it shows real elegance. As it ages you really get a sense the terroir and the grapes of Valpolicella, which can be masked by the sweetness and power of the more powerful, 'modern' styles.

Ombrone Cupano 2012 (Organic)

Behind many of the great figures of the past, stands a famous mentor. Behind Brahms, stood Beethoven; behind Boswell, stood Dr. Johnson. Lionel Cousin, the winemaker at Cupano, was fortunate enough to be mentored by the man regarded by many as the greatest winemaker of all time, the late, great Henri Jayer whose Burgundies, if you can find them, sell for more than those of Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Privileged to hold such a unique legacy, Lionel continues to pursue Jayer’s legendary attention to detail in the vineyards. Indeed, if Lionel Cousin isn’t chasing wild boar off his land (they love his Sangiovese!), he is attending to each bunch of grapes with a pair of nail scissors. Working organically and using a horse to plough between the rows, Cousin is making some of the most honest and authentic wines in Montalcino.

James Suckling - Published on 11 Jan 2017 This has a sense of brooding depth about it and is the most powerful and imposing of the three 2015 single-block releases from Yabby Lake. It has darker cherry and blueberry aromas and some cassis, too. The palate's energetic and really surges in with plenty of fleshy red- and purple-cherry fruits. The tannins wrap and compress before the finish expands upwards. Give this time; best from 2019. Raing: 96

As good as the profound 2010 was, this incredible 2011 has us utterly smitten. We cannot remember a Brunello tasting this delicious this young. It is a triumph of a wine. It is perhaps the best example we've tasted of the late Henri Jayer's impact on Lionel's winemaking. Though the fruit and character are all Montalcino, there's an elegant soul of great Burgundy that runs throughout. For those that bought the amazing 2010, this is one to crack into while you're waiting for that to hit its peak. "The prettiest Brunello I've ever tasted. I had the opportunity to taste several Brunello di Montalcinos from 2011, and to a bottle they paled in comparison to this tremendous wine from Cupano." - Richard Bray, Swig Wines
