Domaine Horgelus Sauvignon and Gros Manseng 2017

Forget Cloudy Bay, forget Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, this Horgelus Sauvignon/Gros Manseng blend costs almost half the price and delivers as much if not more. Typically it shows bright, lifted notes of lemon/lime, melon and grapefruit and a delicate herbaceous character. The Sauvignon Blanc element brings a classic nettle and elderflower zip, while the Gros Manseng gives a gorgeous tropical fruit depth. Endlessly quaffable. Drink from: the moment it's in your possession. Drink until: the bottle is empty.

Ciello Bianco Catarrato, Sicily 2017

We adore this white wine. It reminds us a bit of a spicy Viognier with peachy, apricot flavours, with a lovely hint of Sicilian lemon pith, with a nice salty tang, and some herbs. Unfiltered so it can be cloudy, but this is good! It's really extraordinarily good value. Like amazingly good.

Ortrugo Bonellii 2017

Ortrugo? No we hadn’t heard of it either, but turns out that this hidden gem of Emilia Romagna is downright delicious. Layers of lemon sorbet scrumptiousness make this a perfect party pairing – just throw in some crab canapes or a garlic prawn starter and you’ll be on the way to vinous heaven.

Alphabetical White Vin Blanc 2017

Another Saffer wine that sits firmly in, if not at the very summit of, the unbeatable-value midweek bottle category. If you are in one of those households where someone likes Sauvignon but someone else has gone off it, and you can't agree on what to drink, then try this. It’s a quite blindingly good wine for the price and is made from the rich, Rhone white variety Roussanne. A bona fide charmer that will add a lovely bit of character to your Chrimbo lunch or dinner - a scent of stone fruits here, a soupcon of mountain herbs there, and just the right amount of fruit character to complement a mahoosive variety of festive foods.

AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2018

The 2018 Secateurs wowed us with it's beautiful balance of weight and texture with a fine acidity that will quickly make this your go-to wine. It really separates it from the rafts of pub blackboard Chenins, and puts it in a category of more serious Chenin that often costs a lot more. This is really outstanding wine, and exceptionally good value - it could easily be twice the price and you wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Petit Chablis Louis Moreau 2017

Louis Moreau farms his 52 Ha of vinyeards sustainably, and lovingly tends his vines all year round. The Moreau family have run the estate for over 200 years. Lots of fruit and freshness - more generous than their Chablis with palate cleansing acidity and a wet stone finish.

Sauvignon de Touraine, Domaine de la Rochette 2017

Think of a delicate, floral Sancerre and then think of a better, brighter, more huggable world in which that wine is close to half the price. That’s what our Fleur de Printemps Touraine gives you. It’s as pretty as a snowflake on Christmas morn, with elderflower and white floral notes that pirhouette over a core of lemon sorbet, while there’s an intense streak of minerality that belies this wine’s lesser known appellation. This is a Sauvignon Blanc that even the anti- Sauvignon Blanc brigade can warm to. An absolute winner with grilled fish. A slurp for you and a glug for the baking dish, which would adjust the right amount of zest and refreshment.

Gutedel Weiler Schlipf, Weingut Claus Schneider, Baden 2016

For those of you daring to be different this Christmas, we bring you this delightful German curiosity. Here at Swig HQ we’re never ones to shy away from a weird grape variety, and this 100% Gutedel (known elsewhere as Chasselas) from our Baden Pinot Noir specialist, Claus Schneider, has jingled our bells good and proper. With crisp lemon with fresh green apple fruit, and a delicious core of minerality, it also has elements of hay and even almonds. It is wonderfully refreshing. Perfect for the adventurous Christmas bibber, and a fine pairing with any seafood.

Grillo 'Ariddu' Valdibella 2015 (Organic)

There is a hint of Viognier about it, with lovely vibrant aromatics, orangey fruit, a good texture but not weighty, with a good crisp, dry finish. It's perfect for crossing the divide, between those who don't like Chardonnay and those who don't like Sauvignon, yet far more interesting than Picpoul or Pinot Grigio. We love it.

SPECIAL 12 BOTTLE PRICE FOR NOVEMBER MONEY WEEK WINE CLUB - ONE MONTH ONLY 'There is a veritable ocean of Grüner out there and while it has certainly caught the eye of the UK consumer, I doubt that the average wine drinker realises that there is a gulf in quality from the lean, stripped, pithy wines bumping along the bottom of the wine pond and the serenely, gliding, stunners on the surface. A heavenly example of Austria’s most famous grape, it reeks class on the nose, palate and finish. Buitenverwachting Chardonnay 2017

The winery’s name may sound like a high voltage warning sign posted on the perimeter fence of a German power station, but don’t let that put you off. This is one of the best value Chardonnays on the planet, a full-bodied, concentrated wine full of tangy lime marmalade, green pear, juicy nectarine and toasty oak flavours. You seldom find Chardonnays at this price with so much verve and complexity. Our brief is to find wines that punch above their weight and this could put a few of The Cape’s heavyweights on the canvas.

Mas Cristine Le Grill White Cotes du Roussillon 2017

A delicious mix of sunkissed Roussillon Macabeu and Vermentino fruit, this is as fresh and fun a white as you could wish for, but which also offers more mouthfeel and complexity than its peers. There’s a bit of white peach, yuzu citrus, and a more-ish fleshiness to the palate. This would make a lovely apero or a dry white to complement a starter of smoked salmon with citrus dressing and horseradish cream. It’s worth noting what the winemaker says about this wine: “The 2017 is particularly good as the fruit that would normally go for our top Vermentino, Rock n’ Rolle, all went in here instead. Why? Well, winter 2017 saw our first frost in 60 years, and then, in the summer, the boar got to the fruit as well. There just wasn’t enough to bottle it on its own, so we added it to Le Grill.”

Little Beauty Sauvignon Blanc 2017

This is the most succulent, juicy, complex Sauvignon from Marlborough we've had in ages. It avoids being pungent but has wonderful aromas and flavours that make you remember why we all once fell in love with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. We have always done well with Greywacke but the volumes they’ve started to produce suggest it’ll be difficult for them to maintain the highest quality. So we started to look beyond to the next exciting producer – and there, like a guiding star over Bethlehem (which would make us wise men, so it must be right), we discovered Eveline Fraser’s Little Beauty. Eveline was the winemaker at Cloudy Bay back when it was good. Little Beauty is her own project, using a selection of the best fruit in some of Marlborough's prime vineyards located next to the excellent Dog Point. This is the most succulent, juicy, complex Sauvignon from Marlborough we've had in ages, and reminds you why we all once fell in love with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

Boina White, Portugal Boutique Winery 2017

Exciting things be happening in the Douro Valley. It’s no longer about Port and Bordeaux-imitating oaky, over-extracted table wines. Fresher, lower-alcohol wines showing off the region’s indigenous grape varieties now abound. They’re especially good at vibrant, mineral whites – as exemplified by this traditional Douro field blend (a co-fermentation of various interplanted white grape varieties) from one ofthe most exciting new names on the block. It has a core of stone fruits and green apple with the waxy, toasted nut intensity. On the palate, an almost Palomino-like, conference pear and white peach fruit profile, but what sets this apart from most wines at this price point is the intense minerality rounded off with a buttery finish and hint of toasted hazelnut. A serious festive winner!

Mas Cristine Blanc Cotes du Roussillon 2017

A field(s) blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Macabeu, Carignan Gris and occasionally a bit of Muscat Sec and Vermentino, it is fermented in both tanks and old oak. "2017 was absolutely brilliant for our whites - there is a jump and lift to them that brings a smile to my face, and balances the ripe, tropical notes that come from the Catalan sunshine with a bracing minerality and juiciness that brings it rushing from the glass. Age-worthy, but a delight in its youth, this is a rare wine that can pair with the most sublime of cuisine, think lobster with garlic butter, or just be enjoyed for itself."

Burja Zelen, Slovenia 2017

Ennui, is probably the most common sensation associated with the Christmas time. Avoid ennui entirely this festive season with a pure dose of vinous novelty in the shape of this extraordinary Slovenian white. This wine is not just a novelty, however, it’s a thrillingly, uniquely delicious wine. Zelen is a variety from the Vipava Valley in Slovenia. In the 1980s, there was only 1ha of it in existence. Now there’s around 80ha. ‘Zelen’ means ‘green in Slovenian – and indeed if wine made from this grape is left unfiltered, it will emerge with a distinct emerald green tint. Expect a delicately perfumed nose of white flowers, green apple, then jolts of grapefruit, lemon, apple and floral notes on the palate, and a racy, saline edge. This would be a wonderful wine to pair with oysters – or other shellfish for that matter. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Blank Bottle Rabbitsfoot, Stellenbosch 2017

Green-ness is fine for your Christmas tree, but not for your Sauvignon Blanc. Pieter Walser’s Rabbitsfoot is a ripe and exuberant interpretation of the variety made with fruit from Stellenbosch. It’s produced from only five rows of vines, grapes that are “usually eaten by the babboons”. Well not this year, my simian friends. Quoth Robin Davis: “It reminds me of a bit of Semillon on the nose, but it’s quite plump on the palate, although nicely taut. It’s aromatic, slightly grassy. Softer and more texture on the palate than Semillon. A bit of quince on the aroma, and paw paw, almost mango on the palate, and even white peach.”

Keermont Terrasse White 2015

Alex Starey’s 2015 Terrasse Chenin-based blend was the top-scoring white blend in WineMag ZA 2017 report – a 95-pointer, no less. The backbone of this blend is Chenin blanc from a 46 year old un-irrigated vineyard called ‘Riverside’. This is complemented by Chenin from two younger vineyards and smaller proportions of Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Viognier. It’s probably the most elegant Terrasse we’ve seen from Alex yet – with many-toned floral and stone fruit aromas and a wonderfully textured palate. It offers a level of complexity you’d expect from wines at double the price, and should be enjoyed with that special person in your life. If that special person is you, all the better – twice the pleasure!

Saumur Blanc, Les Fresnettes, Chateau de Targe 2015

As much a Christmas comfort as a pair of Rudolf slippers or the Muppet’s Christmas Carol on the box – there’s something absolutely ‘a point’ about a rich Loire Chenin at this time of year. Maybe it’s those lovely butterscotch and gingery spice hints. Whatever it is, it’s a winner. Chateau de Targé’s ripe and sumptuous 2015 has loads of texture and spice on the palate. It’s rich and toasty but not remotely overcooked, with plenty of mouthfilling buttery stone fruit and that signature zingy Chenin acidity. Class!

BK Wines 'One Ball' Chardonnay, Kenton, Adelaide Hills 2017

Lordy lordington, this is a good Chardonnay. A serious Chardonnay too. Symphonic. One moment rich, expressive, and generously fleshy, the next minute exhilaratingly racy, with a gripping undercurrent of cool, fresh minerality. Fresh cashews, a hint of toast, melon, peach, cream and a saline touch - there’s a lot packed into this wine so decanting is recommended. We’re not allowed to fully disclose the origin of the cuvée name, other than to say that it is in homage to the grower that owns the single vineyard that supplies the fruit... we'll let you fill in the blanks. An eminently fine alternative to white Burgundy for your Christmas dinner table.

A A Badenhorst Family White 2016

A fine alternative to white Burgundy… Adi’s Family White is never less than headily, ecstatically delicious. There’s perhaps a hint more exoticism on the aromatic profile (it’s a Chenin-led blend including various proportions of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Verdelho, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Sémillon, Marsanne and Palomino), but there’s such an elegant, creamy toastiness and palateweight. It’s all supremely well balanced… white peach, yellow apple, heather and verbena notes which are still tightly coiled at the core and would open up with decanting. The Family White is Adi at his best – it’s one of the finest whites in South Africa, and a true Christmas cracker.

Ladoix 1er Cru 'Les Grechons', Maratray-Dubreuil 2016

If we had to pick one white wine to see us through the many challenges and traumas of the Christmas period, it would be this yawningly gorgeous Ladoix prem cru. The 'Les Grechons' vineyard is an extension of the famous Corton-Charlemagne sites and so is the holy grail of Burgundy – but without the silly prices. It's one of those wines for people really in the know. Elegantly expressive, full of lovely rich stone fruit and melon character with hints of dried fruits and spice, toasted hazelnuts and hints of butterscotch. There's also a firm line of flinty minerality, and that delicious combination of texture, body and fresh acidity that the whites around Corton do so well. ‘Cheap’ is not a word you often hear from wine merchants. Not publically anyway. But ‘cheap’ doesn’t always have to be followed by ‘nasty’. It might also be followed by ‘cheerful’. Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. "Such good value, I almost fell out of my chair" – Robin Davis. Yep, Spain really is a wellspring of vinous bargains these days: rich winemaking heritage, check; huge diversity of terroir, check; loads of gnarly old vines with the potential to produce high-quality fruit, plenty of interesting grape varieties, cheap land and production costs – check, check, checkeroo. Enjoy your own pandemonium of parrots by investing a case or two of Adi Badenhorst’s Papegaai (Afrikaans for ‘parrot’) Cinsault. The 2017 red uses the same high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines as the first vintage, but this one has a slightly deeper fruit profile thanks to a small proportion of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi, Eben Sadie and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. Chateau Gelineau, Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2015

That touch of Pauillac, that fragrance of Margaux, that charm of St Emilion... ah, yes, I remember it well! Good Bordeaux at this price is as rare as a hen harrier sighting. We’ve not found better at this price for many years. It also happens to come from the excellent 2015 vintage, which can help propel a comparatively modest Bordeaux to heights of a more expensive wine. Look at the pricing of your average village-level Burgundy from a respectable domaine. You will be required to spend £20 upwards, often closer to £30. You could do that, but you could give this wine a go instead. I can almost guarantee that you will never look back. Considering the lush Pinot character - effortless smoky summer fruits and gamey, orangepeel and sandalwood notes - the beautiful balance and opulent texture this wine offers, frankly, it's a steal. 2015 was an especially warm year in Baden producing beautifully ripe fruit. This has translated to a an entry-level wine that is open and generous but easily capable of ageing too. Johannes told us he recently opened a bottle from 2008 that was drinking perfectly. This really is freakishly good-value. However many bottles you buy of this wine, it will be too few.

It’s not just about choosing a great wine, it’s about choosing a great wine that represents fantastic, siren-wailingly good value. Thanks to the great vintage conditions in this under-appreciated appellation, this is one the best-value wines in Burgundy, a true Holy Grail wine. Given its increasingly insane pricing, red Burgundy is not something we often recommend. For the Maratray-Dubreuil Les Bons Ores 2016, we make an exception.

Maison Blanche Montagne St Emilion 2014

After much research and tasting we’ve found this astonishingly classy Bordeaux from the hills overlooking St Emilion and Pomerol. We love its classical flavour of pencil lead, cedar and black fruits. There is something a bit like a Medoc wine that comes from the Cabernet Franc in the blend with Merlot (like Cheval Blanc) but also undeniably charming and drinkable as St Emilion should be. Being organic makes it even better. It tastes so pure. A really good Christmas day drop.

Barbera d'Alba 'Vigna Pozzo' Renato Corino 2016

In this Barbera there is beauty and generosity. It lights up your palate in the way that Renato’s smile lights up a room. It's known by his importers around the world as the best value wine from his cellar and it's always the first to disappear. It can impress just as well as any Barolo.

Il Piccolo Vinding Montecarrubo 2017

Interesting chap, Peter Vinding-Diers. After a career as a war correspondent in Vietnam, Aden, Malaya, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Nigeria, he started making wine - first in South Africa, then in Bordeaux, Brazil, Kenya of all places, Spain, Chile, and Hungary. Playing a pivotal role in revitalising regions from Graves in the '80s and Tokaj in the early '90s, he then influenced his nephew Peter Sisseck to set up the renowned Pingus in Ribera del Duero. Now he’s in Sicily, making stunning Syrah from massal selection Cote Rotie vines at his Monte Carrubo estate. Il Piccolo is his second wine and is as special as it is singularly expressive of Sicily’s volcanic terroir.

Savage Red Blend 2016

81% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, carefully selected "with love" from vineyards at altitude and with close to the coast. A 94-pointer for both Greg Sherwood MW and Christian Eedes. Sherwood describes it as “the most classically proportioned of all the Savage reds”, with a “beautifully complex nose of perfumed dried roses, black berry fruits, grilled herbs, cured meats, garrigue, fynbos and dusty granitic minerality”. Pretty much on the money, we think. The palate is full with fine tannin, soft spices and juicy cranberry and strawberry along with hints of dark berry fruits. For a slightly alternative Christmas meal, you might try pairing this with slow-cooked beef brisket with star anise and chilli. Yummm – with three ems.

Chateau Moulin Pey-Labrie Canon Fronsac 2009

Until Pomerol became famous, many of the wines of Canon-Fronsac, which is just to the west, used to sell for more. This is a good example of why. It is extraordinarily delicious, deep, rich, and fabulously mature. This is glorious wine to settle down into with a grand meal. Now that the sheen has gone from some of the famous names of Bordeaux that have been very overpriced, this is where to park you money. And it’s a 2009, to boot! Absolutely scrumptious.

St Joseph 'Petit Pere' Aymeric Paillard 2015

Concentrated, but not overly so, fresh and mineral, with taut compact fruit. The aromas are quite closed, but there is super tight blackcurrant, licorice, savoury wood and garrigue notes and a hint of pepper. The palate is firm but supple.
