Domaine Horgelus Sauvignon and Gros Manseng 2017

Forget Cloudy Bay, forget Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, this Horgelus Sauvignon/Gros Manseng blend costs almost half the price and delivers as much if not more. Typically it shows bright, lifted notes of lemon/lime, melon and grapefruit and a delicate herbaceous character. The Sauvignon Blanc element brings a classic nettle and elderflower zip, while the Gros Manseng gives a gorgeous tropical fruit depth. Endlessly quaffable. Drink from: the moment it's in your possession. Drink until: the bottle is empty.

A A Badenhorst Papegaai White Blend 2017

Grown up doesn't mean boring! The 2017 rendition of our favourite Papegaai has more depth and layers - a crunchy poached and dried pear, quince, and lemon biscuit number. For those not familiar with bushvine Palomino (and when it's not made in to sherry,) it offers stunning subtle aromas of salted green apples - very fine and nuanced.

La Valse des Mansengs Domain Horgelus 2017

"This is the most exciting discovery I have made since I began writing this column — a true revelation! It soars from the glass with an extraordinary vitality and energy that belies its modest origins. It is drinking perfectly now, so I would merely enjoy it while it is so intense and delicious. There are traces of citrus and apricots in the background with floral notes from the small amount of Sauvignon Blanc grapes included. Made in the foothills of the Pyrenées, the owners only pick the grapes in the early hours of the day to preserve their aromatics. Fabulous." Bruce Palling, The Week

Alphabetical White Vin Blanc 2017

A blindingly good wine for the price made from one of my favourite grapes, roussanne, that you find in Northern and Southern Rhone blends, but in this case from South Africa. It is a masterful little wine that wont overtake proceedings but will add a lovely bit of character to a lunch or an evening - a scent here and there of stone fruits and mountain herbs as you lift the glass to your nose - with just the right amount of fruit and character for foods like fish, chicken, or fresh pasta with vegetables or riccota. It will be lovely with light starters like burrata and olives. It sits firmly in, if not at the very summit of, the unbeatable-value midweek bottle category. If you are in one of those households where someone likes Sauvignon but someone has gone off it, and you can't agree on what to drink then try this.

Pinot Blanc Portrait Philippe Zinck 2016

It has that handy thing of being neither Chardonnay or Sauvignon, so you’re not going to upset anyone, yet it appeals to people who like one or the other, but it’s no compromise; it happily replaces a Macon, Chablis or unoaked Chardonnays but has some of the aromatics and fruit of a generous Chenin. The aromas are a bit like ripe pear, melon and apples all in one with floral notes. It has good texture and the really expands and fills the mouth, with a nice light fresh tingle. Open a bottle and return to it 3 or 4 days later and it will still be delicious.

Bourgogne Blanc Domaine Thibert et Fils 2014

From the winner of the best young winemaker in Burgundy. “A treasure trove”… ‘Readers disowning white Burgundy because of prices…should really stock up on these wines” Neal Martin. Peaches and cream with a hint of nutmeg and orange flower water. Soft; gentle; inviting. The palate is a joyous mix of generous ripe, fleshy, white fruits – peach and nectarine, with hints of spice and Chantilly cream, all held tight with a perfectly balanced lemon sorbet acidity, that grips and checks that fleshiness, providing a racy, mineral freshness. It’s a beautifully poised Burgundy. Perfect for a lobster, scallops, roast chicken… or just sitting in the sun on with a bottle and good friends. 13% drink now – 2018

Bright light lemon zest and pith with wet stone, a touch of cheese rind and chalk dust on the nose. A fresh, cool summer’s morning. The palate is crisp; bracing; Sancerre-like in its energy. Electric citrus running over stones with a hint of creaminess to it. This is that sort of jolting, vibrant white that thrills on the palate – light, brilliant bottled sunshine. Invigorating. On the nose - cheese rind, crystallised pineapple and lemon biscuits. The nose gives a hint to the voluptuos and nuanced texture. Creamy notes swirl among delicate aromas of pale roses, lillies and that Chablis esque stone - gout de terroir as they'd say in French. It is intense, yet with soft flesh, perfume and mouth feel. Rich mouthfeel, yet a very fine acidity that guides it beautifully to a precise long finish. Note to self. Drink with Coquilles St Jacques, Not peanut butter. Weisser Burgunder AKA Pinot Blanc.

Sentits Blancs Bodegas Puiggros 2014

Honeysuckle, lemon pith, and clotted cream on the nose, with just a hint of struck match. There's orange flower water there too. This is definitely a "shove your nose in there a bunch of times because it'll be different with every sniff" sort of wine. The palate is a great combination of power and subtle nuance. There are some big flavours there - ripe tropical fruit notes, creamy touches, textured oak, but also lighter floral edges and gentle spice as well. This is quite awesome right now - a stonking mouth full of wine - but with age it will mellow a bit. Delicious now, but worth sticking down if you've got the patience. 13.5% Drink now - 2020

BK Wines 'Skin 'n' Bones' White, Adelaide Hills 2016

A new arrival from our favourite Adelaide Hills winery! This wine is 98% Savagnin (not to be confused with Sauvignon!), a lesser-seen variety whose best expression in its native France can be found in the Jura. The juice sits on its skins for one month before going into barrel for natural malolactic fermentation to occur. It retains wonderful freshness while delivering a fanfare of baked apples, honey-roast pears, camomile, dried apricots, orange peel, peaches and cream, and a decidedly herbal perfume of fresh oregano, sage and a hint of fennel. An uplifting, singing acidity adds brightness to the otherwise soft and round palate, making for a lip-smackingly good, dangerously gluggable summer gem. Resist the temptation to drink it all at once though - this wine demands good company and at leat one full evening of deep contemplation.

BK Wines 'One Ball' Chardonnay, Kenton, Adelaide Hills 2017

From grapes sourced in the Kenton Valley, this is one example of what these guys can do with Chardonnay: one moment rich and expressive, generously fleshy, the next minute exhilaratingly racy, with a gripping under current of cool, fresh minerality. Decanting recommended. Drink now - 2022. As this is a public website, we can't fully disclose the origin of the cuvee name, other than that it is in homage to the grower that owns the single vineyard that supplies the fruit... we'll let you fill in the blanks. Brendon and Kirsty don't own any vines themselves. Instead, they take advantage of Australia's "big wine" contraction - finding growers whose exceptional fruit gets lost in huge blends, whose contracts are up, and who want to work with winemakers that genuinely care about their grapes. Not only do Brendon & Kirsty care about the fruit, they also nurture great relationships with the growers and, as a mark of respect, they name all of their single vineyard cuvees after the owners of the vines.

Lovers of fine chardonnay, it's time to get excited and rub your thighs vigorously in anticipation of a modern great. This is a joyful gamay, unpretentious, juicy and easy drinking from Touraine, central Loire. A slight pepperiness and a perfume of violet delicately emerges from the glass. A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Last year, we asked Adi, more hopefully than expectantly, whether he would consider making a red Papegaai to complement his deliriously popular Papegaai white blend. And he did it. No demure, no delay, no cheeky Badenhorst mind games. It was almost frighteningly straight-forward. To top it off, the wine he came up with, a 100% Cinsault, was utterly lovely: bright, light, clean and crunchily fruity, just a joy to drink - another gold star for the bird man of Kalmoesfontein and many happy, sated Swiggers. Cotes du Rhone 'Les Clapas', Domaine Saint Amant 2016

Prettily floral – violets – with peppery soft fruit. Plenty of regional typicity here. Delicate and spicy with a little grainy tannin. A great value CDR. This is about delicacy and nuances rather than power, coming from a terroir much cooler than low lying vineyards. There is also no oak used on this wine. It is for drinking now. Drink with light summer food, barbeques, rabbit, chicken or lamb scented with herbs, sausages, pasta. This is beautifully made by Camille Nosworthy an architect who fell in love with making wine. It’s a 3.5 hectare vineyard of chalk and clay around the village of Suzette at 500 to 620m in the area of Beaumes de Venise in the spectacular Dentelles de Monmirail. These high vineyards and poor soil make the wine so different from those of the Rhone on the valley floor. Saint-Amant’s Les Clapas is not about weight; it’s about perfume, aromatics and vivacity.

Lovely ripe plum and blackcurrant with cocoa dust, tobacco leaf, a touch of sandlewood. Very appealing. Spatburgunder Weiler Schlipf Weingut Claus Schneider Baden 2015

Look at the pricing of your average village-level Burgundy from a respectable domaine. You will be required to spend £20 upwards, often closer to £30. You could do that, but you could give this wine a go instead. I can almost guarantee that you will never look back. Considering the lush Pinot character - effortless smoky summer fruits and gamey, orangepeel and sandalwood notes - the beautiful balance and opulent texture this wine offers, frankly, it's a steal. 2015 was an especially warm year in Baden producing beautifully ripe fruit. This has translated to a an entry-level wine that is open and generous but easily capable of ageing too. Johannes told us he recently opened a bottle from 2008 that was drinking perfectly. This really is freakishly good-value. However many bottles you buy of this wine, it will be too few.

Yantra Tenuta Sette Cieli 2016

'My wife Amelia, who is herself in the wine business, tipped off Swig to this epic estate and they grabbed the portfolio of incredible wines with greedy hands. Made high up in the hills overlooking Bolgheri, where fat Super-Tuscans lazily ripen in the haze, the wines from Sette Cieli combine vivacity and intensity with exquisite accuracy. This is my favourite newcomer to the Tuscan scene and this Merlot / Cabernet blend sees no oak whatsoever. It retains scintillating freshness and drive thank to its lofty, breezy position and also the ultra-organic attitude of their fearless team.
