A A Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault 2016

"Ramnasgras Cinsault 2016 is a serious wine, not simply charming – very pure and linear, with some dry tannic structure. Pretty aromas and flavours, but not much complexity." Tim James, www.grape.co.za

Keermont Pondok Rug Cabernet Franc 2014

From a block planted on Stellenbosch Mountain in 2006, this is a new wine from Keermont. The fact that it’s packaged in a Burgundy bottle gives a clue to the style of the wine: floral and savoury with notes of dried herbs, graphite and a wild unruliness that seems to come with the site.

Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2016

A wine with a more than unique history and story. The small village of Tesselaarsdal in the Overberg, 24km North East of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is named for East India Company settler Johannes Tesselar. On his death in 1810, he bestowed the land to his freed slaves and owner/winemaker Berene herself is a descendant on one of those very slaves. If you look closely at the label, you can make out 2 people walking across the mountain. This is Berene and her Grandmother.

Keermont Steepside Syrah 2012

Planted in 2005 on the steep midslopes of the Helderberg Mountain range, Steepside Syrah sits at an elevation of 300m. Vines grow in rich red clay loam soils with high levels of iron and quartzite originating from the peaks above. The combination of these deep granitic soils and the intensity of the sunshine on the North facing ridge allows the vineyard to produce wines with power and structure, while the spicy herbal aromatics can be attributed to the elevation and the pristine fynbos flora that surround it. All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 20 months maturing in 2'nd fill French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration on 25 November 2013. Only 867 bottles were produced.

Porseleinberg Syrah 2015

Since their 2010 maiden vintage, this Syrah has had a meteoric rise to fame. Owned by Boekenhoutskloof's Marc Kent and with incredible winemaker Callie Louw at the helm, this has been dubbed as a “Cape Cornas” by Tim Atkin – it’s an extremely special and age worthy wine. Every year, the scores seem to get higher and higher, with the 2014 being chosen as the top SA red of the year by Neal Martin and given 96 points. I’ve got a tiny drop of the ’15 in my glass right now and it’s pretty spectacular with an incredible fruit concentration laden with blackberries and soft spice and mallow. Probably the most concentrated so far, with that incredible schist and slight oyster shell character coming through as well. This is one to age, that will bring you joy for many years to come.

Mullineux Family Schist Syrah 2013

Out of the single vineyard series, the Schist has the most structure to it. Red and black fruit, fynbos and lavender plus a touch of white pepper on the nose. Excellent fruit purity, fresh acidity and a nicely grippy finish. Intense but not weighty, intricate and refined, extraordinary long on the finish – truly memorable.

Leeu Passant Dry Red Wine 2015

The Cinsault portion of this wine comes from a vineyard in Wellington planted in 1900. At 117 years of age, it is the oldest red grape vineyard in South Africa. This is blended with more cinsault from a positively youthful 91-year-old vineyard block in Franschhoek, along with some embryonic Helderberg Cabernet Sauvignon (36 years old) and some twinkle-in-its-father's-eye Helderberg Cabernet Franc (20 years old). The label pays homage to the revered South African wines of the 50s, 60s ad 70s, and uses fonts recognisable from wines like Rustenberg and Libertas.
