Savage Red Blend 2016

81% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, carefully selected "with love" from vineyards at altitude and with close to the coast. A 94-pointer for both Greg Sherwood MW and Christian Eedes. Sherwood describes it as “the most classically proportioned of all the Savage reds”, with a “beautifully complex nose of perfumed dried roses, black berry fruits, grilled herbs, cured meats, garrigue, fynbos and dusty granitic minerality”. Pretty much on the money, we think. The palate is full with fine tannin, soft spices and juicy cranberry and strawberry along with hints of dark berry fruits. For a slightly alternative Christmas meal, you might try pairing this with slow-cooked beef brisket with star anise and chilli. Yummm – with three ems.

Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch 2015

'The second vintage of this Stellenbosch release is every bit as good as the 2014. Sourced from three parcels on the Helderberg, all of them on sandstone soils, it’s a sweet, plush, scented Cabernet with stylish oak, plenty of grassy perfume and good underlying structure and concentration. 2020-29.' Keermont Pondok Rug Cabernet Franc 2014

From a block planted on Stellenbosch Mountain in 2006, this is a new wine from Keermont. The fact that it’s packaged in a Burgundy bottle gives a clue to the style of the wine: floral and savoury with notes of dried herbs, graphite and a wild unruliness that seems to come with the site.

A A Badenhorst Raaigras Grenache 2017

'20% whole-bunch fermentation. Cherry, wild strawberry, earth and white pepper on the nose. The palate is rich and broad yet not without freshness – dense fruit and fine but simultaneously grippy tannins. Impactful without being gauche.' Winemag.co.za

A A Badenhorst Sk'windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca 2017

'The 2017 Sk’Windjiesvlei Tinta Barocca comes from a seven-hectare unpronounceable vineyard whose name means “gusty wind,” planted in 1962, when this Portuguese variety was becoming increasingly popular in the Capelands. It has a very pure blackberry and briar bouquet with hints of pressed iris and later, just a hint of canned prune. The palate is medium-bodied with black plum, blackberry and light white pepper notes, intriguingly almost Barolo-like in tannic structure, with gentle grip on the finish. Superb.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100

Restless River Wanderlust Grenache 2017

The Vrede vineyard is one of the great sites in the Walker Bay area, but it’s better known for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay than Grenache. This one off is a curiosity, made with fruit from the southern side of each row and fermented with whole bunches. Light, pale and fragrant, with alluring cherry and strawberry fruit. Drink: 2019-2024. – Tim Atkin MW, 92/100

Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2018

A wine with a more than unique history and story. The small village of Tesselaarsdal in the Overberg, 24km North East of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is named for East India Company settler Johannes Tesselar. On his death in 1810, he bestowed the land to his freed slaves and owner/winemaker Berene herself is a descendant on one of those very slaves. If you look closely at the label, you can make out 2 people walking across the mountain. This is Berene and her Grandmother.

Restless River Le Luc Pinot Noir 2016

The first release from young vineyards. 20% whole-bunch fermentation before 14 months in old oak. Red fruit, herbs, earth and a hint of musk on the nose. The palate is again light bodied with really snappy acidity and nicely grippy tannins, making for a very dry finish. – Christian Eedes

Porseleinberg Syrah 2015

Since their 2010 maiden vintage, this Syrah has had a meteoric rise to fame. Owned by Boekenhoutskloof's Marc Kent and with incredible winemaker Callie Louw at the helm, this has been dubbed as a “Cape Cornas” by Tim Atkin – it’s an extremely special and age worthy wine. Every year, the scores seem to get higher and higher, with the 2014 being chosen as the top SA red of the year by Neal Martin and given 96 points. I’ve got a tiny drop of the ’15 in my glass right now and it’s pretty spectacular with an incredible fruit concentration laden with blackberries and soft spice and mallow. Probably the most concentrated so far, with that incredible schist and slight oyster shell character coming through as well. This is one to age, that will bring you joy for many years to come.

A A Badenhorst Secateurs Rose 2018

'The 2018 Secateurs Swartland Rosé is a straight Cinsault bottled in mid-April. It has a pretty red cherry and light grapefruit bouquet, touches of strawberry developing in the glass. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, nice weight (perhaps more than previous vintages) and lovely, pure red cherry and strawberry toward the finish. Excellent.' Neal Martin, Vinous.com

Mullineux Family Straw Wine 2017 (37.5cl)

A five-star wine in Platter’s, South Africa’s leading wine guide, a 97-pointer for Wine Advocate in the US, this is a bar-setting South African sweet wine of quite outstanding depth and length. The grapes are dried outside in the shade until they are half raisined, concentrating flavours, acidity and sugar into a super intense, but balanced treat. Fermentation is in old French barrels with indigenous yeasts and can last up to a year. The naturally high acid in Chenin Blanc gives this wine great lift and focus. A vinous marvel.

Mullineux Family Straw Wine 2018 (37.5cl)

'The 2018 is a touch richer than the 2017 due to the drought. The flavor profile is quite normal - marmalade, almonds, marzipan, dried apricots, and ginger. The 2018 has more intensity all round - weight, aromatics and also acidity, so just a more engaging experience!' Chris Mullineux
