A A Badenhorst Papegaai White Blend 2017

Grown up doesn't mean boring! The 2017 rendition of our favourite Papegaai has more depth and layers - a crunchy poached and dried pear, quince, and lemon biscuit number. For those not familiar with bushvine Palomino (and when it's not made in to sherry,) it offers stunning subtle aromas of salted green apples - very fine and nuanced.

Alphabetical White Vin Blanc 2017

A blindingly good wine for the price made from one of my favourite grapes, roussanne, that you find in Northern and Southern Rhone blends, but in this case from South Africa. It is a masterful little wine that wont overtake proceedings but will add a lovely bit of character to a lunch or an evening - a scent here and there of stone fruits and mountain herbs as you lift the glass to your nose - with just the right amount of fruit and character for foods like fish, chicken, or fresh pasta with vegetables or riccota. It will be lovely with light starters like burrata and olives. It sits firmly in, if not at the very summit of, the unbeatable-value midweek bottle category. If you are in one of those households where someone likes Sauvignon but someone has gone off it, and you can't agree on what to drink then try this.

AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2017

Golden aromas of ripe, oven baked apricots, fresh pineapple chunks and wall climbing magnolia. The nose conjures up balmy evening sitting on the terrace (or in South Africa - the stoep) and as the sun goes down, the air filling with a heavenly, sweet fragrance of the flowers - gardenias perhaps, climbing up the trellis and walls. All that sweet tropical fruit is kept in check by a leesy, honey dew melon palate, dried mango, witha vibrant, almost peppery finish.

Thelema Mountain Sutherland Chardonnay Elgin 2017

To have a wine that keeps you coming back from more, time after time, and has you discovering new things with each inhale, at this price point, is a thing of true beauty and rarity. At first you get a toasty, slighty smokey beurre noissette on the nose that opens into a vanilla tinted toffee apple and just a touch of that tangy citrus to draw it back in. The palate continues this incredible focus and taut minerality with chantilly cream served over a rich buttery apple tart injected with that vigour and exuberance of a flinty minerality.

Blank Bottle Moment of Silence, Wellington 2017

Stunning, all rounder there is nothing you can fault in this wine. The 2017 shows less intensity than the 2016, but is by no means any less delicious, maintaining all of it's style and swagger. Aromas of candied lemon, cooked apple and mango with a core of minerality. Soft and voluptuous, it has a lovely ripeness and a fleshy, creamy mouthfeel, which leads to a perfect tangy freshness giving some zip to its otherwise mellow feel.

The Great SA Wine Co Great White 2015

Lemongrass, grapefruits, white lillies, hints of honey and white peach notes. The acidity is long and fine, giving a refreshing length to the wine. Barrel ferment Sauvignon has such a charm to it, and the Semillon is just beginning to assert itself. Beautifully composed with a generous and ambrosial palate.

Smells like luscious turkish delight and crystallised pineapple bashed with quartzy stones. Tangerine fruited with juicy white peaches, honey blossom, with a lifted spiced finish reminiscent of the steep hillsides of Condrieu. Though not, it's not Viognier. 100% Fernao Pires from one 51 year old vineyard planted in sandy soils on the Darling side of the Swartland.

Blank Bottle Orbitofrontal Cortex 2016

Orbitofrontal Cortex is named after the part of your brain where conscious decisions are made. It's fair to expect great things with a wine made as the consciously selected best of the best....! On the nose, we have layers of sun dried hay, tonnes of sweet conference pears, baked apples, even some fresh crunchy green apple acidity. It's an intricately put together number, but no fear, if you like your whites with texture, crunch, ripe fruit and with a story, then this is for you.

Thorne and Daughters "Rocking Horse" 2016

This multi-regional white blend takes its name from the wooden rocking horse that John lovingly made for his daughters out of old oak barrel staves. "John Seccombe has been producing some lovely, quite cerebral wines since his debut in 2013, cut from a similar cloth as his friend Chris Alheit (both winemakers are members of the Zoo Biscuit collective). These are not meant to seduce you with overt, conspicuous flavors. They are more textural, subtle wines whose attributes seem to creep up on you. Quantities are extremely small, but they are very reasonably priced considering the care and quality that goes into them." Neal Martin Tasting note: Honeysuckle, sweet meadow herbs, pear and fennel. Leesy, creme anglaise and tangerine peel. Totally entrancing.

Restless River Ava Marie Chardonnay 2015

The boutique winery of Restless River is located in Hemel-en-Aarde where winemakers Craig and Anne Wessels are carefully making two Restless River wines. Established in 1999 in this very young wine region, the Restless River’s Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay vineyards represent some of the oldest in all of the valley. The fruit, sourced from tiny yields from vines planted on extremely diverse soils and located only 5km from the Atlantic Ocean, struggles to ripen in this particularly cold climate and lingers on the vine long into autumn, often harvested as late as May. All wines produced from Restless River are unfined as well as unfiltered.

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A deep purple in the glass, there's something undeniably juicy, bitter sweet chocolatey and clove studded fruit laden about this. Dark chocolate dipped orange, a hint of menthol with a lovely warm earthiness- think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy Autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a grilled Barnsley chop cooked with rosemary and some whole baked garlic cloves. A great take on a Cape style Bordeaux blend.

A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Last year, we asked Adi, more hopefully than expectantly, whether he would consider making a red Papegaai to complement his deliriously popular Papegaai white blend. And he did it. No demure, no delay, no cheeky Badenhorst mind games. It was almost frighteningly straight-forward. To top it off, the wine he came up with, a 100% Cinsault, was utterly lovely: bright, light, clean and crunchily fruity, just a joy to drink - another gold star for the bird man of Kalmoesfontein and many happy, sated Swiggers. If only life could always be this way...A week or so ago, with bated breath, we had our first taste of the second vintage and, joy of joys, the man's gone and done it again!

Boekenhoutskloof Chocolate Block 2016

I sipped some some of this new vintage the winery sent over at lunch time on Wednesday and realised right away that it was a new chapter in life of The Chocolate Block. I've just been off the phone to the super talented and super kind winemaker, Gottfried Mocke, who has crafted this wine with its originator, Marc Kent, also the the founder of Boekenhoutskloof, and a few other great winemakers. The result is beautiful. It is a Chocolate Block that floats on your palate like never before, with not one hard edge, with beautiful perfumed berry fruit, with a lovely sensual texture and what I can only describe as very yummy flavour indeed. Gottfried explained to me that the fruit in the 2016 is better than ever before, with the Syrah coming mainly from Porseleinberg in Swartland. There is more Grenache, less Cabernet with the attendant requirement for new oak. A wee hint of Viognier adds aroma and a bit of gentle fruit and flesh.

Donovan Rall has done a good job with his 2015 from Darling fruit. On the nose, it shows raspberry through black cherry, some olive and a little scrub. If you like freshness, florals, prettiness and perfume in your wines, then look no further. Somewhat reminiscent of the wines of the Terrasses du Larzac, with its Pinot Noir like weight and high toned perfume. First time they have done a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon now that the vines are older (25 years). Winemaker's note: Rich crimson red colour. Lukas Van Loggerenberg 'Breton' Cabernet Franc 2016

It’s telling that Lukas references cool-climate Old World wine with his Cab Franc. ‘Breton’ is in fact the local Loire name for the grape. Lukas has made just three barrels of it from a couple of rows of vines in the Polkadraai Hills, just outside of Stellenbosch. Most Cape cab franc is made in the Bordelais mould, but here there’s more affinity with Anjou or Touraine – the grapes are picked early, giving an ]eminently quaffable 12.5% alcohol. Winemaking is very hands-off. Natural ferment, neutral barrels, no racking until bottling with no additives except a little SO2 at bottling. Pure, vibrant juice, wonderfully self-assured, low in alcohol but with the tannic structure and acidity to work really well with food - and to age.

From a block planted on Stellenbosch Mountain in 2006, this is a new wine from Keermont. The fact that it’s packaged in a Burgundy bottle gives a clue to the style of the wine: floral and savoury with notes of dried herbs, graphite and a wild unruliness that seems to come with the site.

Keermont Steepside Syrah 2012

Planted in 2005 on the steep midslopes of the Helderberg Mountain range, Steepside Syrah sits at an elevation of 300m. Vines grow in rich red clay loam soils with high levels of iron and quartzite originating from the peaks above. The combination of these deep granitic soils and the intensity of the sunshine on the North facing ridge allows the vineyard to produce wines with power and structure, while the spicy herbal aromatics can be attributed to the elevation and the pristine fynbos flora that surround it. All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 20 months maturing in 2'nd fill French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration on 25 November 2013. Only 867 bottles were produced.

Porseleinberg Syrah 2015

Since their 2010 maiden vintage, this Syrah has had a meteoric rise to fame. Owned by Boekenhoutskloof's Marc Kent and with incredible winemaker Callie Louw at the helm, this has been dubbed as a “Cape Cornas” by Tim Atkin – it’s an extremely special and age worthy wine. Every year, the scores seem to get higher and higher, with the 2014 being chosen as the top SA red of the year by Neal Martin and given 96 points. I’ve got a tiny drop of the ’15 in my glass right now and it’s pretty spectacular with an incredible fruit concentration laden with blackberries and soft spice and mallow. Probably the most concentrated so far, with that incredible schist and slight oyster shell character coming through as well. This is one to age, that will bring you joy for many years to come.
