Alphabetical White Vin Blanc 2017

Another Saffer wine that sits firmly in, if not at the very summit of, the unbeatable-value midweek bottle category. If you are in one of those households where someone likes Sauvignon but someone else has gone off it, and you can't agree on what to drink, then try this. It’s a quite blindingly good wine for the price and is made from the rich, Rhone white variety Roussanne. A bona fide charmer that will add a lovely bit of character to your Chrimbo lunch or dinner - a scent of stone fruits here, a soupcon of mountain herbs there, and just the right amount of fruit character to complement a mahoosive variety of festive foods.

AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2018

The 2018 Secateurs wowed us with it's beautiful balance of weight and texture with a fine acidity that will quickly make this your go-to wine. It really separates it from the rafts of pub blackboard Chenins, and puts it in a category of more serious Chenin that often costs a lot more. This is really outstanding wine, and exceptionally good value - it could easily be twice the price and you wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Thelema Mountain Sutherland Chardonnay Elgin 2017

To have a wine that keeps you coming back from more, time after time, and has you discovering new things with each inhale, at this price point, is a thing of true beauty and rarity. At first you get a toasty, slighty smokey beurre noissette on the nose that opens into a vanilla tinted toffee apple and just a touch of that tangy citrus to draw it back in. The palate continues this incredible focus and taut minerality with chantilly cream served over a rich buttery apple tart injected with that vigour and exuberance of a flinty minerality.

Blank Bottle Moment of Silence, Wellington 2017

Stunning, all rounder there is nothing you can fault in this wine. The 2017 shows less intensity than the 2016, but is by no means any less delicious, maintaining all of it's style and swagger. Aromas of candied lemon, cooked apple and mango with a core of minerality. Soft and voluptuous, it has a lovely ripeness and a fleshy, creamy mouthfeel, which leads to a perfect tangy freshness giving some zip to its otherwise mellow feel.

Blank Bottle Offspring 2017

Darling Chenin blanc and Elgin Sémillon. 'Come November each year, my mind is mostly made up about which components in the cellar is destined for which wines - a thought (and tasting) process that takes months to complete. I know it’s hard to empathise with my situation, but the fact that we pick grapes from roughly 60 different vineyards all over the Western Cape really doesn’t make this an easy process. When the grapes come into the winery, each vineyard is made and kept separate in the winery - all unique in character - and then within each batch, every barrel has its very own personality. So the first step is to decide which components we don’t like. These we pump into a tank and sell off as bulk wine. We then set the single vineyard/varietal-specific wines aside. After this, we get to work on the blends. We taste in the mornings, we taste at night. We taste at full-moon and at new moon. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, less of this, more of that…In the end we bottle up to 17 different white wines in one year. When this process is complete, we always have components left. Components that have unique characteristics, but due to a clash in personalities did not make it into a blend. We then make up one last white blend of that year’s vintage: the offspring of the winery for the year. Like our kids, each offspring contributes in its own way to the family - a blend made up with no preconceived ideas or goals in mind.' Pieter Walser Winemaker

Blank Bottle Moment of Silence, Wellington 2018

With aromas of guava, pineapple, honeyed peach, and a hint of fynbos which melds with the faintest notes of classy old wood. It has a lovely generous texture but this is kept in check and it's not big. The Viognier comes through nicely, which I love. Balancing the full bodied feel in this vintage there is a lively clarity and freshness.

The Great SA Wine Co Great White 2017

'If you’re going to call your wine The Great White it had better be pretty bloody good. And it is. This cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Chenin Blanc from DeMorgenzon winemaker Carl van der Merwe is savoury, flinty and naturally fermented with textured lees and classy oatmeal and citrus fruit complexity. 2017-21'. – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 93/100

Blank Bottle Rabbitsfoot, Stellenbosch 2017

Green-ness is fine for your Christmas tree, but not for your Sauvignon Blanc. Pieter Walser’s Rabbitsfoot is a ripe and exuberant interpretation of the variety made with fruit from Stellenbosch. It’s produced from only five rows of vines, grapes that are “usually eaten by the babboons”. Well not this year, my simian friends. Quoth Robin Davis: “It reminds me of a bit of Semillon on the nose, but it’s quite plump on the palate, although nicely taut. It’s aromatic, slightly grassy. Softer and more texture on the palate than Semillon. A bit of quince on the aroma, and paw paw, almost mango on the palate, and even white peach.”

Keermont Terrasse White 2015

Alex Starey’s 2015 Terrasse Chenin-based blend was the top-scoring white blend in WineMag ZA 2017 report – a 95-pointer, no less. The backbone of this blend is Chenin blanc from a 46 year old un-irrigated vineyard called ‘Riverside’. This is complemented by Chenin from two younger vineyards and smaller proportions of Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Viognier. It’s probably the most elegant Terrasse we’ve seen from Alex yet – with many-toned floral and stone fruit aromas and a wonderfully textured palate. It offers a level of complexity you’d expect from wines at double the price, and should be enjoyed with that special person in your life. If that special person is you, all the better – twice the pleasure!

Orbitofrontal Cortex is named after the part of your brain where conscious decisions are made. It's fair to expect great things with a wine made as the consciously selected best of the best....! On the nose, we have layers of sun dried hay, tonnes of sweet conference pears, baked apples, even some fresh crunchy green apple acidity. Thorne and Daughters "Rocking Horse" 2017

'Rocking Horse is our cornerstone wine and takes its name from a wooden rocking horse that we made for our daughters out of old oak barrel staves. This is our signature wine and it is where all our work comes together to make our most complete wine. The wine is composed from a number of carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape. The aromas are of lime leaf, white peach, exotic woods, and sweet dried herbs. In the mouth, the wine starts broad and rich, resolving into a keen line of acidity supported by a gentle tannin with flavours of burnt sugar, orange flower and rooibos leaf.' ***5* Platters Wine Guide 2019*** 'The 2017 Old Vines White is a blend of 65% Chenin Blanc, 10% Viognier, 10% Clairette Blanche, 13% Grenache Blanc and 2% Sémillon Gris. This has a lighter bouquet than the previous vintage, featuring touches of honeysuckle and peach skin with white flowers tucked just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and quite tensile, showing a subtle white pepper and marmalade note toward the precise finish. Very fine, although I have a soft spot for the hedonism shown by the 2016.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 91/100 ‘

Savage White Blend 2017

'The nose is already very expressive with complex aromatics of freshly baked apple crumble drizzled in honey, orange blossom, tangerine peel, yellow orchard fruits and a delicious passion fruit twist. But like many 2017 whites, there is a real clarity and focus to the wine along with a defined core of dusty granitic minerality. The entry on the palate reveals the tart, vibrantly fresh characteristics of the Sauvignon Blanc and the Semillon, that awaken the palate with zesty yellow grapefruit, lanolin, honied white peaches and Granny Smith apple puree notes. Classic higher altitude vineyard nuances ensure this wine retains incredible intensity together with a fleshy, creamy lemon pie concentration underpinned by a cool, dusty, stony minerality. Powerful without being brutish, linear and focused without being lean. This is another wonderful flagship white blend from the Savage winery that continues the great run of form for this cuvee. A A Badenhorst Family White 2016

A fine alternative to white Burgundy… Adi’s Family White is never less than headily, ecstatically delicious. There’s perhaps a hint more exoticism on the aromatic profile (it’s a Chenin-led blend including various proportions of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Verdelho, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Sémillon, Marsanne and Palomino), but there’s such an elegant, creamy toastiness and palateweight. It’s all supremely well balanced… white peach, yellow apple, heather and verbena notes which are still tightly coiled at the core and would open up with decanting. The Family White is Adi at his best – it’s one of the finest whites in South Africa, and a true Christmas cracker.

'The 2017 Golden Slopes Chenin Blanc comes from yellow granite soils at slightly higher elevation than Adi’s other Chenin and with a higher clay content. It has an intriguing, complex bouquet of Japanese yuzu, quince, lemon thyme and lemongrass, a little spicier than its fellow Chenin Blanc. Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Did you know that the collective noun for a group of parrots is a ‘pandemonium of parrots’? Worthy of inclusion as a Christmas cracker factlet, that one. Enjoy your own pandemonium of parrots by investing a case or two of Adi Badenhorst’s Papegaai (Afrikaans for ‘parrot’) Cinsault. The 2017 red uses the same high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines as the first vintage, but this one has a slightly deeper fruit profile thanks to a small proportion of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi, Eben Sadie and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. Joyous juice with more than a hint of Swartland swagger.

Classy nose, redcurrant, and gentle herb notes. Incredibly easy to drink and enjoy but with class and finesse. Super charming yet smart. Amazing value. Lovely Sunday wine and dinner party bottle. Yet again, amazing value. Lovely for drinking now, with no hard edges. But as with all Thelema wines they age well, so you don’t have to rush it. Blank Bottle Sigh of Relief, Stellenbosch 2017

'In October 2012, a very well-known viticulturist and winemaker was walking through his little Merlot vineyard on the upper high slopes of the Helderberg (past Cordoba farm, to the very end of the road…), when he noticed something very strange. Halfway to the top of the vineyard, at a specific point, the growth points of the vine-shoots, in the morning sunlight, showed an abrupt change in colour - from green to bronze. And there’s only one varietal that does that. And it’s NOT Merlot… Now on paper and according to the government, the previous owner had planted that whole block as Merlot and had been making wine from it for 13 years. Cabernet Franc, however, has this unique characteristic of showing bronze growth points (in the morning sun) only a few days of the year while the shoots are more or less 5 - 8 cm long. And it just happened to be on one of those mornings that the winemaker went for his morning walkabouts in his vineyard… So it turned out that the top part of the vineyard is in fact Cabernet Franc, NOT Merlot! The only explanation for this is that there must have been a mix-up when the little vines were distributed from the nursery.'

Savage Red Blend 2015

'. This dark horse has always been backward and restrained, broody and slightly sulky, but bearing in mind it comes from one of the best red vintages in the Cape in a generation, it can be forgiven for being initially shy and ungiving. With some coaxing, the nose slowly starts to reveal its secrets, showing notes of salty red liquorice spice, aniseed root, cassis leaf, grenadine, blood oranges and vermouth botanicals. The palate is taut and very precise, linear and crisply textured with vivacious notes of tangerine, naartjie peel, ruby grapefruit, sour red cranberry and earthy red plums, all dusted with a liberal dose of crushed black peppercorns and mineral graphite spice. Tantalisingly complex, it is almost impossible to unravel the intricacies of this classy red and identify traits of individual varieties. With the extra aging, the tannins are starting to become a little more supple and pliable, yet continue to lend great textural gravitas, power and focus to this blend. I’d say it has been worth the wait… but just don’t wait to put in your order for this impressive red blend as it signals the end of one era and the dawning of a new and exciting chapter in the history of the Savage winery. Drink on release and age this beauty for 10 to 15+ years comfortably.' 96/100 Greg Sherwood

Savage Thief In The Night 2017

'The wine shows a real individuality and personality with bright fragrant violet perfume, sappy spicy peppery raspberry and redcurrant confit complexity, hints of sun raisined cranberries, cured bresaola, boiled raspberry sweets and wild strawberry. The palate weight is soft and sensual, combining the best of both Grenache and Cinsault to form an impressively harmonious, silky soft sappy red blend. The wine seems to grow exponentially in the glass, unfurling and unravelling to reveal layers of strawberry jam, raspberry compote and Turkish delight all framed with bright crystalline acids that really amplify the wines purity, minerality and sense of place. Such a pretty wine with the sleekest and most polished tannins and a mellow fruit intensity. Despite its eminent drinkability in youth, this is no frivolous ‘vin de soif’ and could just maybe, over time, acquire a similar cult following to that of Duncan’s excellent Cinsault-dominated Follow The Line red blend from Darling. Wonderful purity and clarity are always hallmarks of this wine as are the radiant fresh acids and bright, crunchy, sappy red berry fruits. Once again, this wine is the epitome of elegance, walking quite lightly, shimmering all the way to the finish with illuminated brilliance. This really is an exceptional, mouth-watering delight. 81% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, carefully selected "with love" from vineyards at altitude and with close to the coast. A 94-pointer for both Greg Sherwood MW and Christian Eedes. Sherwood describes it as “the most classically proportioned of all the Savage reds”, with a “beautifully complex nose of perfumed dried roses, black berry fruits, grilled herbs, cured meats, garrigue, fynbos and dusty granitic minerality”. Pretty much on the money, we think. The palate is full with fine tannin, soft spices and juicy cranberry and strawberry along with hints of dark berry fruits.
