A A Badenhorst Papegaai White Blend 2017

Grown up doesn't mean boring! The 2017 rendition of our favourite Papegaai has more depth and layers - a crunchy poached and dried pear, quince, and lemon biscuit number. For those not familiar with bushvine Palomino (and when it's not made in to sherry,) it offers stunning subtle aromas of salted green apples - very fine and nuanced.

Thelema Mountain Sauvignon Blanc 2017

This has a very pretty aroma, more blackcurrant than the herbaceous gooseberry styles you can get. The palate is lovely, floaty, elegant and pretty. Refreshing but not at all sharp or aggressive. I really like it, reminding me of what it was like at its best. Refreshing but not overtly so. A lovely drink. Many Sauvignons from anywhere in the world cost a lot more but few are more enjoyable.

Alphabetical White Vin Blanc 2017

Another Saffer wine that sits firmly in, if not at the very summit of, the unbeatable-value midweek bottle category. If you are in one of those households where someone likes Sauvignon but someone else has gone off it, and you can't agree on what to drink, then try this. It’s a quite blindingly good wine for the price and is made from the rich, Rhone white variety Roussanne. A bona fide charmer that will add a lovely bit of character to your Chrimbo lunch or dinner - a scent of stone fruits here, a soupcon of mountain herbs there, and just the right amount of fruit character to complement a mahoosive variety of festive foods.

AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2018

The 2018 Secateurs wowed us with it's beautiful balance of weight and texture with a fine acidity that will quickly make this your go-to wine. It really separates it from the rafts of pub blackboard Chenins, and puts it in a category of more serious Chenin that often costs a lot more. This is really outstanding wine, and exceptionally good value - it could easily be twice the price and you wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Buitenverwachting Chardonnay 2017

The winery’s name may sound like a high voltage warning sign posted on the perimeter fence of a German power station, but don’t let that put you off. This is one of the best value Chardonnays on the planet, a full-bodied, concentrated wine full of tangy lime marmalade, green pear, juicy nectarine and toasty oak flavours. You seldom find Chardonnays at this price with so much verve and complexity. Our brief is to find wines that punch above their weight and this could put a few of The Cape’s heavyweights on the canvas.

Thelema Mountain Sutherland Chardonnay Elgin 2017

To have a wine that keeps you coming back from more, time after time, and has you discovering new things with each inhale, at this price point, is a thing of true beauty and rarity. At first you get a toasty, slighty smokey beurre noissette on the nose that opens into a vanilla tinted toffee apple and just a touch of that tangy citrus to draw it back in. The palate continues this incredible focus and taut minerality with chantilly cream served over a rich buttery apple tart injected with that vigour and exuberance of a flinty minerality.

Blank Bottle Moment of Silence, Wellington 2017

Stunning, all rounder there is nothing you can fault in this wine. The 2017 shows less intensity than the 2016, but is by no means any less delicious, maintaining all of it's style and swagger. Aromas of candied lemon, cooked apple and mango with a core of minerality. Soft and voluptuous, it has a lovely ripeness and a fleshy, creamy mouthfeel, which leads to a perfect tangy freshness giving some zip to its otherwise mellow feel.

Smells like luscious turkish delight and crystallised pineapple bashed with quartzy stones. Tangerine fruited with juicy white peaches, honey blossom, with a lifted spiced finish reminiscent of the steep hillsides of Condrieu. Though not, it's not Viognier. 100% Fernao Pires from one 51 year old vineyard planted in sandy soils on the Darling side of the Swartland.

Blank Bottle Rabbitsfoot, Stellenbosch 2017

Green-ness is fine for your Christmas tree, but not for your Sauvignon Blanc. Pieter Walser’s Rabbitsfoot is a ripe and exuberant interpretation of the variety made with fruit from Stellenbosch. It’s produced from only five rows of vines, grapes that are “usually eaten by the babboons”. Well not this year, my simian friends. Quoth Robin Davis: “It reminds me of a bit of Semillon on the nose, but it’s quite plump on the palate, although nicely taut. It’s aromatic, slightly grassy. Softer and more texture on the palate than Semillon. A bit of quince on the aroma, and paw paw, almost mango on the palate, and even white peach.”

Keermont Terrasse White 2015

Alex Starey’s 2015 Terrasse Chenin-based blend was the top-scoring white blend in WineMag ZA 2017 report – a 95-pointer, no less. The backbone of this blend is Chenin blanc from a 46 year old un-irrigated vineyard called ‘Riverside’. This is complemented by Chenin from two younger vineyards and smaller proportions of Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Viognier. It’s probably the most elegant Terrasse we’ve seen from Alex yet – with many-toned floral and stone fruit aromas and a wonderfully textured palate. It offers a level of complexity you’d expect from wines at double the price, and should be enjoyed with that special person in your life. If that special person is you, all the better – twice the pleasure!

Thorne and Daughters "Rocking Horse" 2017

'Rocking Horse is our cornerstone wine and takes its name from a wooden rocking horse that we made for our daughters out of old oak barrel staves. This is our signature wine and it is where all our work comes together to make our most complete wine. The wine is composed from a number of carefully selected vineyard sites in the Western Cape. The aromas are of lime leaf, white peach, exotic woods, and sweet dried herbs. In the mouth, the wine starts broad and rich, resolving into a keen line of acidity supported by a gentle tannin with flavours of burnt sugar, orange flower and rooibos leaf.' Mullineux Family White Blend 2017

***5* Platters Wine Guide 2019*** 'The 2017 Old Vines White is a blend of 65% Chenin Blanc, 10% Viognier, 10% Clairette Blanche, 13% Grenache Blanc and 2% Sémillon Gris. This has a lighter bouquet than the previous vintage, featuring touches of honeysuckle and peach skin with white flowers tucked just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity and quite tensile, showing a subtle white pepper and marmalade note toward the precise finish. Very fine, although I have a soft spot for the hedonism shown by the 2016.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 91/100 ‘

A A Badenhorst Family White 2016

A fine alternative to white Burgundy… Adi’s Family White is never less than headily, ecstatically delicious. There’s perhaps a hint more exoticism on the aromatic profile (it’s a Chenin-led blend including various proportions of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Verdelho, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Sémillon, Marsanne and Palomino), but there’s such an elegant, creamy toastiness and palateweight. It’s all supremely well balanced… white peach, yellow apple, heather and verbena notes which are still tightly coiled at the core and would open up with decanting. The Family White is Adi at his best – it’s one of the finest whites in South Africa, and a true Christmas cracker.

Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Did you know that the collective noun for a group of parrots is a ‘pandemonium of parrots’? Worthy of inclusion as a Christmas cracker factlet, that one. Enjoy your own pandemonium of parrots by investing a case or two of Adi Badenhorst’s Papegaai (Afrikaans for ‘parrot’) Cinsault. The 2017 red uses the same high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines as the first vintage, but this one has a slightly deeper fruit profile thanks to a small proportion of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi, Eben Sadie and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. Joyous juice with more than a hint of Swartland swagger.

Mullineux Syrah 2016

'The 2016 Syrah is 100% whole-bunch fruit, and I think this gives it the edge over the 2015. It has a very fresh, focused nose with more edginess than the previous vintage, offering touches of peppermint and dried herbs. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin - quite a "cool customer," presenting a longer, more precise finish than the 2015. Excellent.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100

Savage Red Blend 2016

81% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, carefully selected "with love" from vineyards at altitude and with close to the coast. A 94-pointer for both Greg Sherwood MW and Christian Eedes. Sherwood describes it as “the most classically proportioned of all the Savage reds”, with a “beautifully complex nose of perfumed dried roses, black berry fruits, grilled herbs, cured meats, garrigue, fynbos and dusty granitic minerality”. Pretty much on the money, we think. The palate is full with fine tannin, soft spices and juicy cranberry and strawberry along with hints of dark berry fruits. For a slightly alternative Christmas meal, you might try pairing this with slow-cooked beef brisket with star anise and chilli. Yummm – with three ems.

Keermont Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

First time they have done a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon now that the vines are older (25 years). Winemaker's note: Rich crimson red colour. The nose is a complex mix of savoury notes: crushed herbs, violets, sandalwood, leather and some lovely bright red fruit. The palate is fine and yet powerful. Lush spicy red fruit is complimented by blueberry and bramble notes. Powerful tight-knit tannin and a very linear acidity afford the wine a long succulent finish. Drink 2017-2030.

From a block planted on Stellenbosch Mountain in 2006, this is a new wine from Keermont. The fact that it’s packaged in a Burgundy bottle gives a clue to the style of the wine: floral and savoury with notes of dried herbs, graphite and a wild unruliness that seems to come with the site.

Saurwein Nom Pinot Noir 2017

Goose. Need we say more? Oh all right then. Pinot Noir and goose. The Ur gastronomic combo of the festive season, the quintessence of Christmas. Jessica Saurwein’s Nom Pinot grows more assured with every new vintage. Cotes de Nuits in style, from the mighty Kaaimansgaat vineyard in Elandskloof, this is from the fiendishly dry 2017 vintage, which has given this wonderfully complex pinot intense aromatics, hints of orange rind, concentrated red berry and plum fruit, and a lick of wood spice. Mullineux Family Straw Wine 2017 (37.5cl)

A five-star wine in Platter’s, South Africa’s leading wine guide, a 97-pointer for Wine Advocate in the US, this is a bar-setting South African sweet wine of quite outstanding depth and length. The grapes are dried outside in the shade until they are half raisined, concentrating flavours, acidity and sugar into a super intense, but balanced treat. Fermentation is in old French barrels with indigenous yeasts and can last up to a year. The naturally high acid in Chenin Blanc gives this wine great lift and focus. A vinous marvel.
