Pecorino, Linea Miru, Vinicola Carassanese 2017

Gentle ripe fruit, unfettered by oak. As easy-going as you like. Sweet floral apples – a Golden Delicious and Red Delicious sort of vibe – with pear drops and melon and a hint of jasmine. It’s generously fruity but with a palate-cleansing minerality at the end, that ultimately makes it a very refreshing wine

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo MAB, Abbazia di Propezzano 2017

We found it a class above most of the wine in the region - fresh and vibrant with a juicy more-ishness that earned Paolo a big star next to his name in our tasting booklet. Not smothered in oak, which was the trend in recent years. Rather, it's comfortable in its shoes a lovely daily drink with pasta and grilled vegetables, meats and every day food.

Chianti Rufina 'Cedro' Lavacchio 2016 (Organic)

'To prove that Swig can do traditional Tuscany as well as modern Tuscany, here is a stunning, budget Chianti from an estate which they introduced to me a few years ago. With a bright, red cherry and cranberry nose leading the way it seems that this wine might be a little slender, but it blossoms on the palate and rounds out to reward the drinker with juicy blackberry notes and even a touch of lavender and liquorice for good measure. This is a beautiful wine and it is drinking perfectly already.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

La Calcinara Il Cacciatore di Sogni 2015

The holy grail of winemaking - this is both rich and sumptuous and light and delicate. How do they do it? We'll never know, but gosh are we happy to drink the end result! The nose is like a hug in wine form - autumnal fruits, nutmeg spice and a touch of pretty perfume. Then the palate is like biting into your first damson of the season you can almost taste the juice running down your chin. All finished off with toasty, beautifully integrated oak and super smooth tannins. You'd be a fool not to snap this up!

Valpolicella Superiore Monte Santoccio Nicola Ferrari 2016

Forget everything you think about Valpolicella, because this is going to blow your mind! Packed full of cherry and a beautiful sweet and sour balance. On the palate, a melange of summer fruits - raspberrys and strawberrys with a peppering of balsamic and a hint of green pepper. Fantastic as a tipple, but will come into its own with food!

Hortulanus Tuscany 2011

Some words from winemaker Toby Owen about the special location that these vines are grown in. "Immediately in front of the vineyard is the highest and nearest of the mountains, Monte Amiata (1734m). Its high slopes of dense deciduous forest have a cooling effect and a pronounced diurnal temperature excursion, especially during the period of ripening: In late summer at sunset, chilled air from the summit of the mountain starts descending into our vineyards cooling the maturing grapes and preserving acidity. These conditions tend to provide us with grapes that are rich, not only in sugars and flavour, but also polyphenols (tannin, colour) and acidity giving naturally concentrated, firm, elegantly structured wines that can age with grace while also drinking well when relatively young. The protective presence of the graceful wooded massif of Monte Amiata lends perfect growing conditions to the patchwork of vines, olives, cherry and chestnut nestled in the high tributaries of Tuscany's great Val d'Orcia. Enchanting and remote, it's a place where man and nature live in harmony. Birds, mammals, plants and insects abound in a glorious springtime riot of colour, texture and sound. Just as did the vineyards of the Etruscan culture 2000 years before, our scattered plots of vines take their nourishment from the fresh mountain springs and the vital soils of limestone and lava heaved up and spewed out by Amiata's tumultuous volcanic past. Protected by the altitude and cool wooded slopes from the excesses of summer rain and heat, our grapes ripen slowly to reach perfect maturity and bestowing us with vibrant wines of intense fruit, elegant acidity and sweet tannin."

Yantra Tenuta Sette Cieli 2016

'My wife Amelia, who is herself in the wine business, tipped off Swig to this epic estate and they grabbed the portfolio of incredible wines with greedy hands. Made high up in the hills overlooking Bolgheri, where fat Super-Tuscans lazily ripen in the haze, the wines from Sette Cieli combine vivacity and intensity with exquisite accuracy. This is my favourite newcomer to the Tuscan scene and this Merlot / Cabernet blend sees no oak whatsoever. It retains scintillating freshness and drive thank to its lofty, breezy position and also the ultra-organic attitude of their fearless team. This is an estate to keep a very close eye on because it is tipped for super-stardom and Yantra is the perfect way to meet and greet the range.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

Chianti Rufina Riserva 'Cedro', Lavacchio 2011

I like this wine for its gentle ripe Tuscan character. This is very smooth for a Chianti. It's a style/taste you don't find anywhere else. This producer is very organic in their approach. A warm, very smooth, plush Tuscan red with wild herbs and redcurrant fruits. Wonderful with beef. The winemakers are Stefano di Blasi and Federico Cerelli, who used to make the famous Tignanello and Solaia for Antinori.

Barbera d'Alba Sandrone 2014

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com "The 2014 Barbera d'Alba is a solid wine for the year. Rose petal, bright raspberry fruit, mint and sweet spices are nicely pushed forward. Bright and medium in body, the 2014 is a bit angular and lacks the seamlessness of the very best years, but it is nicely done. This is about as good as it gets in 2014 for Barbera. Drink 2017-2020"

Barbera d'Alba 'Vigna Pozzo' Renato Corino 2014

We've managed this year to get one whole barrel! Only ten are made. Somtimes we get none, such is the demand for this delicious and great value Piemontese wine. A barrel equates to 25 cases. Pozzo, meaning water well, is an excellently sited special cru in La Morra planted with 60 year old vines. It ages deliciously. When young you would be best decanting. You can expect stewed plums, espresso, roses, pine; it's plush and smooth with lots of fruit. You can age it for ten years or more and it's as it best between 4 and 10 years.

Valpolicella Ripasso Monte Santoccio Nicola Ferrari 2016

Even winemaker, Nicola Ferrari, who is not one to blow his own trumpet, says the Ripasso 2016 is his best yet. Guidalberto Tenuta San Guido 2016 (2nd Wine of Sassicaia)

The Guidalberto shows similar elegance and finesse that’s exemplified in Sassicaia, the sweet-fruited Super-Tuscan character of enticing aromas that Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot create when blended. Spending twenty months in one-third new oak barrels, this wine is irresistible two years from release, and will be ideal drinking over the next decade.

Sangiovese, 'Ciparisso', La Fralluca, Suvereto 2013

Gorgeous sangiovese with red fruit, soft oak and a little development. Deep sour cherry, a little blackcurrant, cola and sweetly decaying autumn leaves/stewed tea. Cocoa powder-like oak and vanilla hints. A glut of ripe-to-bursting summer berries. The palate is round with a sour cherry fruit note and beautifully fine, powdery tannins. The acidity keeps this feeling fresh, and palate is quite light despite the oak profile and ripe fruit.

Barbaresco "Ausario" Molino, Piemonte 2013

Founded in the mid 70’s, Molino is another fabulously proud family set up. 3 brothers run the estate, with a gentle guiding hand from their Uncle. They farm about 14Ha, stretching across Treiso, Guarene, Alba and Costigliole d'Asti , producing both white and red wines. The brothers are avid supporters of low intervention techniques and using methods that work with the natural growth of the vine and minimal use of mineral fertilizers.

Indaco, Tenuta Sette Cieli, Tuscany 2013

Indaco 2013 is from Tenuta Sette Cieli, an up and coming producer on the next hillside to the famous Sassicaia. It is a blend of the Bordeaux varieties. They are just out of the Bolgheri zone, on the Tuscan coast, South of Livorno, but if Bolgheri was re-drawn, they would almost certainly be within it. It is higher altitude than all but the highest of Sassicaia’s original vineyard, so the style tends to be a bit fresher than some of the more typical Bolgheri wines. 2013 is an important vintage for Sette Cieli as it was the one when the current owner took over the reins from his mother and took the wines in a new direction with a new winemaker . They are a producer to look out in the future. They share the viticulture team with Ornellaia.

Renato Corino Barolo Arborina 2013

An amazing cru that sits a few metres to the east of Rocche and just above it on the hillside. You get, from the slightly more easterly exposure compared to the fully south exposed Rocche, a slightly more lifted aroma with brighter aromatics and a hint more savoury and spice. This is exceptional wine that ages really, really well. I enjoy drinking Arborina on release, but it continues to reveal more complexity, depth and class over the years. Probably at it's peak 2022-2025.

Ombrone Cupano 2012 (Organic)

Behind many of the great figures of the past, stands a famous mentor. Behind Brahms, stood Beethoven; behind Boswell, stood Dr. Johnson. Lionel Cousin, the winemaker at Cupano, was fortunate enough to be mentored by the man regarded by many as the greatest winemaker of all time, the late, great Henri Jayer whose Burgundies, if you can find them, sell for more than those of Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Privileged to hold such a unique legacy, Lionel continues to pursue Jayer’s legendary attention to detail in the vineyards. Indeed, if Lionel Cousin isn’t chasing wild boar off his land (they love his Sangiovese!), he is attending to each bunch of grapes with a pair of nail scissors. Working organically and using a horse to plough between the rows, Cousin is making some of the most honest and authentic wines in Montalcino.

Barolo Rocche dell Annunziata Renato Corino 2013

Considered a Grand Cru of the commune of La Morra. It’s completely South facing and is typically the fullest and ripest tasting of Renato Corino’s wines. It’s usually delicious when young, but this is a bit more reticent and closed than in some years. I think that’s no bad thing and a reflection of using less new oak than normal. It will develop in complexity and richness over the years. It really does need another 4 or 5 years to open up, but it’s special and a great wine from Renato, from this excellent vintage.

Scipio Tenuta Sette Cieli 2013

This is a micro-cuvée only made in the best years – just 300 cases – to see what they can do with 100% Cabernet Franc. It’s pretty damned lovely – like Indaco, it needs more time – and you can tell by it being open for 24/48 hours that it’s got excellent potential, and it will just get better and better. It’s a bit more ‘right-bank’ St-Emilion style perhaps than the ‘left-bank’ Médoc. Like Indaco, it’s also another very special wine.

Brunello di Montalcino Cupano 2011 (Organic)

As good as the profound 2010 was, this incredible 2011 has us utterly smitten. We cannot remember a Brunello tasting this delicious this young. It is a triumph of a wine. It is perhaps the best example we've tasted of the late Henri Jayer's impact on Lionel's winemaking. Though the fruit and character are all Montalcino, there's an elegant soul of great Burgundy that runs throughout. For those that bought the amazing 2010, this is one to crack into while you're waiting for that to hit its peak. "The prettiest Brunello I've ever tasted. I had the opportunity to taste several Brunello di Montalcinos from 2011, and to a bottle they paled in comparison to this tremendous wine from Cupano." - Richard Bray, Swig Wines

Cerasuolo CAb, Abbazia di Propezzano 2017

Almost rose like in complexion yet it has more complexity and drinks a bit more like a light red. You can drink it with fish, pasta, risotto as well as white meats and pink lamb cutlets. Will probably be excellent with cold cuts and herb stuffing. It's beautiful and a speciality of the region, that to be good - as this is - can only be made with the very best grapes. Beautiful and exceptional value.

Fragrant and fruity, with fresh notes of golden apple and white peach. It has a beautiful straw yellow colour with tinges of green . Prosecco Collfondo Fratelli Collavo NV (Organic)

In a world where Pawsecco (yes, that is Prosecco for your dog) and Prosecco crisps actually exist, Swig is fighting a one-man mission to return this planet to normality and bring back Prosecco you actually want to drink! We guarantee that your first sip of Marco Collavo's 'Collfondo' will completely change your perception of Prosecco and have you head over heels in an instant. This is savoury and grown up with layers of citrus, white peach and freshly baked bread. Where other Proseccos are gone as soon as they are supped, this has a long, lingering finish, an unctuous texture and a super-fine, stylish mousse. One of the great joy's of this weeks Italian tasting was watching the glint in Marco's eyes as he helped customer after customer discover the joy that is this ancient-method Prosecco.
