Cayega Roero Arneis, Tenuta Carretta 2015

You’ll need one bottle to drink while you’re cooking and another with your food, this is so thirst quenching. There is something about the flavour of Roero Arneis, a white grape from Piemonte, that is very appealing but can be elusive. It’s a wine that can be bland and expensive, but get it right and the flavour and fruit is sufficient to be perfect with fish dishes and it does not overwhelm. Add a sprig of parsley to your dish and it positively sings.

Mo Leone, Bianchello de Metauro, Bruscia 2014

Gone are the days of thin, inspid Italian whites. This is super vibrant, brimming with sun ripened orchard fruits. Dried mango, peach and green apple jump out of the glass, and the perfectly balanced acidity entices you back for another sip. And another.....

Grillo 'Ariddu' Valdibella 2015

There is a hint of Viognier about it, with lovely vibrant aromatics, orangey fruit, a good texture but not weighty, with a good crisp, dry finish. It's perfect for crossing the divide, between those who don't like Chardonnay and those who don't like Sauvignon, yet far more interesting than Picpoul or Pinot Grigio. We love it.

Il Famoso Grottino Marche Bianco, Bruscia 2015

The Il Famoso grape is (ironically) rather rare. There are only around 12 hectares of the vine were known about in Emilia-Romagna, and another four in the Marches, planted by Bruscia. Stylistically the wine has similarities to Greco di Tufo and Viognier, although not as floral.

La Calcinara Clochard 2016

A lovely word, 'Clochard'. It means 'vagrant' in French and this sumptuous white is so named because La Calcinara's verdicchio vines lie outside the Verdicchio Castelli DOC boundary, making it an outcast, a vagabond among wines, wandering free in the land of great reds but nonetheless a verdicchio 'sotto lo stesso cielo' - under the same sky, as Paolo describes it. Rich and floral with lovely hints of jasmine and creamy almond. There's a delicious richness but its kept in shape by a brisk minerality and a lemony acidity which ultimately make each sip refreshing. A food-loving white that will also age handsomely.

Puntacroce, Costa d' Amalfi 2014

Don't drink this too cold. The fruit and aromatics will be muted and you will just get the minerality. A temperature of 10-13C would give you the full prismatic flavour effect: acacia honey, mandarin, apricot, citrus blossom, lychee, mango, ginger, lemon, bergamot and rosemary; a palate of invigorating tangy minerality suggestive of the wine's volcanic origin; textured, elegant with a clean, very long citrusy-saline finish, and comes with an abiding sense of linen shirts wafting in the breeze and sun-dappled balconies overlooking a sapphire sea. LIke some rare and lovely flower - you won't find another aromatic white like this any time soon. Drink 2017-2020

La Calcinara Il Cacciatore di Sogni 2015

The holy grail of winemaking - this is both rich and sumptuous and light and delicate. How do they do it? We'll never know, but gosh are we happy to drink the end result! The nose is like a hug in wine form - autumnal fruits, nutmeg spice and a touch of pretty perfume. Then the palate is like biting into your first damson of the season you can almost taste the juice running down your chin. All finished off with toasty, beautifully integrated oak and super smooth tannins. You'd be a fool not to snap this up!

Capolemole Rosso, Marco Carpineti 2013

Fabulously Italian, this is sheer joy. It’s also terrific value. A bit like Barolo but easier on the palate. It’s one of Southern Italy’s best Italian reds: heather, violets and cherries drift with cranberries and a touch of plum; the palate is serious and contemplative with darker, more plummy fruit, with branches and leaves of wild herbs stitched beautifully throughout. Good with pasta, pizza and meats.

Valpolicella Ripasso Monte Santoccio Nicola Ferrari 2015

'Ripasso' is a Valpolicella style which involves reusing the pressed skins of the grapes that go into Amarone during fermentation, which adds structure, power and complexity. Aged for 24 months in a combination of Slavonian oak botti and French barriques, this is one of the most interesting as well as enjoyable Ripassos you're ever likely to try. Is is just one third of the price of his mentor's, and I would say as good, as I think there is great purity in the wine.

Barbera d'Asti 'La Bricca' Rinaldi, Piedmont 2009

While Barolo may be the king of Piedmont, its little brother, Barbera, cavorts around the region like a playboy prince, constantly reinventing itself and turning up in a variety of unexpected disguises. It’s a fiendishly difficult grape to pin down and we have tasted it in all it forms, from the very dark and brooding, to the light and ethereal. This one clearly looks up to its big brother, displaying similar flavour characteristics of warm plum skins, loose tea, leather, kirsch, tomato leaves and cherry wood. Where Barolo has muscle and power, this capers more nimbly, with its naturally high acidity carrying those delicious autumnal flavours within a lighter and more forgiving frame. 14% alc. Langhe Nebbiolo "Il Crutin" Manzone, Monforte d'Alba 2013

Il Crutin is made with 100% Nebbiolo sourced from vines of the Castelletto and Gramolere vineyards in Monforte d’Alba. Because the winery has no ‘minor’ vineyards to use for an entry-level, approachable nebbiolo, the family decided to declassify parts of the Castelletto and Gremolere vineyard to make il Crutin. Il Crutin (‘small cellar’ in Piedmontese dialect) is an old house located on the Gremolere hill: hand-carved in the rock in the 1800’s, purchased by Giovanni Manzone in 2000. Dark plums, coffee beans and aniseed. Cranberries with a bit of leather and a long dry finish, with a berry tinted finish.

Abbazia di Propezzano Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2012

What an extraorordinarily lovely wine. There is no overt oak influence. You’ve just got the softened, subtly developed spicy fruit. Could nose this all day. Floral hints waft up from the glass, with high notes of wild strawberry, red cherry, lilies and hints of fresh leather, and low notes of all-spice and summer fruit compote. The tannins are fine, firm and savoury, the finish fresh and ethereal. This wine has five years' maturity already but will age for at least a further five.

Barbera d'Alba 'Vigna Pozzo' Renato Corino 2014

We've managed this year to get one whole barrel! Only ten are made. Somtimes we get none, such is the demand for this delicious and great value Piemontese wine. A barrel equates to 25 cases. Pozzo, meaning water well, is an excellently sited special cru in La Morra planted with 60 year old vines. It ages deliciously. When young you would be best decanting. You can expect stewed plums, espresso, roses, pine; it's plush and smooth with lots of fruit. You can age it for ten years or more and it's as it best between 4 and 10 years.

Barolo Castelletto 2011

'Manzone's 2011 Barolo Castelletto is surprisingly high-toned and delicate for this site. Soft, floral notes and bright, red stone fruit flavors are all finely knit. This is an especially lifted, at times fragile, Barolo. The mid-weight structure makes me think the 2011 will drink at its best sooner rather than later, but there is also a good amount of supporting freshness throughout.' Galloni

Amarone Monte Santoccio Nicola Ferrari 2012

Using grapes that have been partially dried on mats from harvest until January and aged for 30 months in French and American 500l oak barrels, we think this is one of the most complex wines produced in Italy. It is not like the massive more porty versions of Amarone, which can also be lovely, rather it shows real elegance. As it ages you really get a sense the terroir and the grapes of Valpolicella, which can be masked by the sweetness and power of the more powerful, 'modern' styles.

Indaco, Tenuta Sette Cieli, Tuscany 2013

Indaco 2013 is from Tenuta Sette Cieli, an up and coming producer on the next hillside to the famous Sassicaia. It is a blend of the Bordeaux varieties. They are just out of the Bolgheri zone, on the Tuscan coast, South of Livorno, but if Bolgheri was re-drawn, they would almost certainly be within it. It is higher altitude than all but the highest of Sassicaia’s original vineyard, so the style tends to be a bit fresher than some of the more typical Bolgheri wines. 2013 is an important vintage for Sette Cieli as it was the one when the current owner took over the reins from his mother and took the wines in a new direction with a new winemaker . They are a producer to look out in the future. They share the viticulture team with Ornellaia.

Renato Corino Barolo Arborina 2013

An amazing cru that sits a few metres to the east of Rocche and just above it on the hillside. You get, from the slightly more easterly exposure compared to the fully south exposed Rocche, a slightly more lifted aroma with brighter aromatics and a hint more savoury and spice. This is exceptional wine that ages really, really well. I enjoy drinking Arborina on release, but it continues to reveal more complexity, depth and class over the years. Probably at it's peak 2022-2025.

Barolo Rocche dell Annunziata Renato Corino 2013

Considered a Grand Cru of the commune of La Morra. It’s completely South facing and is typically the fullest and ripest tasting of Renato Corino’s wines. It’s usually delicious when young, but this is a bit more reticent and closed than in some years. I think that’s no bad thing and a reflection of using less new oak than normal. It will develop in complexity and richness over the years. It really does need another 4 or 5 years to open up, but it’s special and a great wine from Renato, from this excellent vintage.
