Ciello Bianco Catarrato, Sicily 2017

We adore this white wine. It reminds us a bit of a spicy Viognier with peachy, apricot flavours, with a lovely hint of Sicilian lemon pith, with a nice salty tang, and some herbs. Unfiltered so it can be cloudy, but this is good! It's really extraordinarily good value. Like amazingly good.

Pinot Grigio La Jara 2017 Organic

A Pinot Grigio that dances across the palate with as much enthusiasm and joy as someone dancing the Charleston. Organic and vegan to boot! Like all of La Jara's wines, this is made with the utmost care and respect to nature, and tastes just heavenly. Sunkissed apricots, peach juice and pretty fragrant flowers. A Pinot Grigio to make you believe in Pinot Grigio again!

Ortrugo Bonelli 2017

Ortrugo? No we hadn’t heard of it either, but turns out that this hidden gem of Emilia Romagna is downright delicious. Layers of lemon sorbet scrumptiousness make this a perfect party pairing – just throw in some crab canapes or a garlic prawn starter and you’ll be on the way to vinous heaven.

Pecorino, Linea Miru, Vinicola Carassanese 2018

Pecorino, the grape, not the cheese, is enjoying a sort of celebrity status among Italian varieties at the moment. It'll never quite be a Madonna or George Clooney, but a minor speaking part in a Hollywood blockbuster is well within its reach. The growing popularity of this grape of La Marche (there were only 87ha in Italy in 2000; that number must have risen exponentially by now) comes down to its light, fruity, slightly mineral charm and its bevibilita - drinkability. Pecorinos are typically aged in steel tanks and made to be drunk young. This is a wine that is all about love and friends and family. It is meant to be enjoyed with your nearest and dearest, plenty of great food and a good old natter. Post a recent sojourn to Bocca di Lupo, I am even more Italy-obsessed than ever, so why not try this with a rich and buttery Saltimbocca with fresh summer greens and creamy mash. Or take some time out of your hectic schedule and make an asparagus risotto, with a dash of the wine itself and lashings of parmesan.

Grillo 'Ariddu' Valdibella 2015 (Organic)

There is a hint of Viognier about it, with lovely vibrant aromatics, orangey fruit, a good texture but not weighty, with a good crisp, dry finish. It's perfect for crossing the divide, between those who don't like Chardonnay and those who don't like Sauvignon, yet far more interesting than Picpoul or Pinot Grigio. We love it.

La Calcinara Clochard 2017

A lovely word, 'Clochard'. It means 'vagrant' in French and this sumptuous white is so named because La Calcinara's verdicchio vines lie outside the Verdicchio Castelli DOC boundary, making it an outcast, a vagabond among wines, wandering free in the land of great reds but nonetheless a verdicchio 'sotto lo stesso cielo' - under the same sky, as Paolo describes it. Rich and floral with lovely hints of jasmine and creamy almond. There's a delicious richness but its kept in shape by a brisk minerality and a lemony acidity which ultimately make each sip refreshing. A food-loving white that will also age handsomely.

Barbera Bonelli 2017

‘Cheap’ is not a word you often hear from wine merchants. Not publically anyway. But ‘cheap’ doesn’t always have to be followed by ‘nasty’. It might also be followed by ‘cheerful’. That’s a good thing to be and there should be no shame in saying so. ‘Cheap and nasty’ is a bargain-bucket Crazy Frog’s ‘Last Christmas’ EP, ‘cheap and nasty’ is a bumper roll of Poundland binbags. ‘Cheap and cheerful’ It’s also organic. Can’t say fairer than that, guv. Super with a bowl of pasta and tomato sauce.

Chianti Rufina 'Cedro' Lavacchio 2016 (Organic)

'To prove that Swig can do traditional Tuscany as well as modern Tuscany, here is a stunning, budget Chianti from an estate which they introduced to me a few years ago. With a bright, red cherry and cranberry nose leading the way it seems that this wine might be a little slender, but it blossoms on the palate and rounds out to reward the drinker with juicy blackberry notes and even a touch of lavender and liquorice for good measure. This is a beautiful wine and it is drinking perfectly already.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

La Calcinara Il Cacciatore di Sogni 2015

The holy grail of winemaking - this is both rich and sumptuous and light and delicate. How do they do it? We'll never know, but gosh are we happy to drink the end result! The nose is like a hug in wine form - autumnal fruits, nutmeg spice and a touch of pretty perfume. Then the palate is like biting into your first damson of the season you can almost taste the juice running down your chin. All finished off with toasty, beautifully integrated oak and super smooth tannins. You'd be a fool not to snap this up!

Terre de San Leonardo, Trentino, Italy 2015

A blend of Carmenere, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon / 13% alc This is harmonious, restrained and very well balanced. It is classically styled - Bordeaux / Margaux type of finesse, with gentle berry and savoury notes with a light hint of oak. This stood out at a recent large tasting as one of the best values in the room. It can be enjoyed now but will, like Bordeaux, age nicely and be rewarding over the next 3 or 4 years.

Yantra Tenuta Sette Cieli 2016

One of Decanter's Top "25 Under £25" this year, Yantra is the bottling from the most exciting newcomer in Tuscan winemaking, Tenuta Sette Cieli. A merlot/cabernet blend with bundles of sweet cassis, dry herbs and spice, it would cause the heavens to be riv’n with angels singing whether drunk with takeaway pizza on an anonymous Wednesday night or poured at a swish Chrimbo dinner complete with Fortnums crackers. Yantra is made for drinking young but two to four years of ageing would do the wine no harm at all.

Valpolicella Ripasso Monte Santoccio Nicola Ferrari 2016

Or should that be Saint Nicola? Do you see what we did there? Ahaha haha ha... ah... hee... hey. Aherk herm. Sorry about that. Nicola Ferrari possibly warrants sainthood, though, for his transcendentally delicious Valpols, Ripassos and Amarones. Elegant, perfumed, with silky strawberry and cherry liqueur fruit and savoury, earthy notes, and a hint of that magical aroma of fine Amarone, this is a wine for your most luxurious dinner parties. Nicola describes the 2016 Ripasso as his best yet. Take heed.

In this Barbera there is beauty and generosity. It lights up your palate in the way that Renato’s smile lights up a room. It's known by his importers around the world as the best value wine from his cellar and it's always the first to disappear. It can impress just as well as any Barolo.

Sangiovese, 'Ciparisso', La Fralluca, Suvereto 2013

Gorgeous sangiovese with red fruit, soft oak and a little development. Deep sour cherry, a little blackcurrant, cola and sweetly decaying autumn leaves/stewed tea. Cocoa powder-like oak and vanilla hints. A glut of ripe-to-bursting summer berries. The palate is round with a sour cherry fruit note and beautifully fine, powdery tannins. The acidity keeps this feeling fresh, and palate is quite light despite the oak profile and ripe fruit.

Monte Santoccio Santoccio Rosso Nicola Ferrari 2017

This is a truly an inspiring wine. It's a new release from Nicola Ferrari, the disciple of the late, great Bepe Quintarelli. I drank it last night with lasagne and was in seventh heaven. The nose captivates - perfumed with the tantalising bitter-sweet aromas of Amarone in the background, but it floats on the palate. There's a lovely density, with power yet with grace. The flavours are supremely delicious. It's wine perfection. This is a very special achievement. There is no need to wait to drink it as it gives huge pleasure immediately. But it will keep a few years.

Barbaresco "Ausario" Molino, Piemonte 2013

Founded in the mid 70’s, Molino is another fabulously proud family set up. 3 brothers run the estate, with a gentle guiding hand from their Uncle. They farm about 14Ha, stretching across Treiso, Guarene, Alba and Costigliole d'Asti , producing both white and red wines. The brothers are avid supporters of low intervention techniques and using methods that work with the natural growth of the vine and minimal use of mineral fertilizers.

Indaco, Tenuta Sette Cieli, Tuscany 2014

Indaco is from Tenuta Sette Cieli, an up and coming producer on the next hillside to the famous Sassicaia. It is a blend of the Bordeaux varieties, including Malbec. They are just out of the Bolgheri zone, on the Tuscan coast, but if Bolgheri was re-drawn, they would almost certainly be within it. It is higher altitude than all but the highest of Sassicaia’s original vineyard, so the style tends to be a bit fresher than some of the more typical Bolgheri wines. They share the viticulture team with Ornellaia.

Renato Corino Barolo Arborina 2013

An amazing cru that sits a few metres to the east of Rocche and just above it on the hillside. You get, from the slightly more easterly exposure compared to the fully south exposed Rocche, a slightly more lifted aroma with brighter aromatics and a hint more savoury and spice. This is exceptional wine that ages really, really well. I enjoy drinking Arborina on release, but it continues to reveal more complexity, depth and class over the years. Probably at it's peak 2022-2025.

Amarone Monte Santoccio Nicola Ferrari 2013

Using grapes that have been partially dried on mats from harvest until January and aged for 30 months in French and American 500l oak barrels, we think this is one of the most complex wines produced in Italy. It is not like the massive more porty versions of Amarone, which can also be lovely, rather it shows real elegance. As it ages you really get a sense the terroir and the grapes of Valpolicella, which can be masked by the sweetness and power of the more powerful, 'modern' styles.

Scipio Tenuta Sette Cieli 2013

This is a micro-cuvée only made in the best years – just 300 cases – to see what they can do with 100% Cabernet Franc. It’s pretty damned lovely – like Indaco, it needs more time – and you can tell by it being open for 24/48 hours that it’s got excellent potential, and it will just get better and better. It’s a bit more ‘right-bank’ St-Emilion style perhaps than the ‘left-bank’ Médoc. Like Indaco, it’s also another very special wine.

Brunello di Montalcino Cupano 2011 (Organic)

As good as the profound 2010 was, this incredible 2011 has us utterly smitten. We cannot remember a Brunello tasting this delicious this young. It is a triumph of a wine. It is perhaps the best example we've tasted of the late Henri Jayer's impact on Lionel's winemaking. Though the fruit and character are all Montalcino, there's an elegant soul of great Burgundy that runs throughout. For those that bought the amazing 2010, this is one to crack into while you're waiting for that to hit its peak. "The prettiest Brunello I've ever tasted. I had the opportunity to taste several Brunello di Montalcinos from 2011, and to a bottle they paled in comparison to this tremendous wine from Cupano." - Richard Bray, Swig Wines

Almost rose like in complexion yet it has more complexity and drinks a bit more like a light red. You can drink it with fish, pasta, risotto as well as white meats and pink lamb cutlets.
