Domaine Horgelus Sauvignon and Gros Manseng 2017

Forget Cloudy Bay, forget Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, this Horgelus Sauvignon/Gros Manseng blend costs almost half the price and delivers as much if not more. Typically it shows bright, lifted notes of lemon/lime, melon and grapefruit and a delicate herbaceous character. The Sauvignon Blanc element brings a classic nettle and elderflower zip, while the Gros Manseng gives a gorgeous tropical fruit depth. Endlessly quaffable. Drink from: the moment it's in your possession. Drink until: the bottle is empty.

Pinot Blanc Portrait Philippe Zinck 2016

It has that handy thing of being neither Chardonnay or Sauvignon, so you’re not going to upset anyone, yet it appeals to people who like one or the other, but it’s no compromise; it happily replaces a Macon, Chablis or unoaked Chardonnays but has some of the aromatics and fruit of a generous Chenin. The aromas are a bit like ripe pear, melon and apples all in one with floral notes. It has good texture and the really expands and fills the mouth, with a nice light fresh tingle. Open a bottle and return to it 3 or 4 days later and it will still be delicious.

Cotes du Rhone Blanc Viognier, Chateau Gigognan 2015

Owners Jacques and Anne Callet took over the Chateau in 1996, vowing to return the estate to it's former glory - the dizzy days of the 17th century when the estate and vineyards were run by the Archbishop of Avignon. An awful lot has happened since then - a full renovation of their "humble castle" and restoration of the cellars, an extensive replanting scheme and a full conversion to organics, gaining their Ecocert in 2010. 2012 saw the arrival of Philippe Cambie - former rugby player turned oenologist and Grenache obsessive, as well as being Robert Parker's much applauded "best oenologist in the world" in 2010.

Bourgogne Blanc Domaine Thibert et Fils 2014

From the winner of the best young winemaker in Burgundy. “A treasure trove”… ‘Readers disowning white Burgundy because of prices…should really stock up on these wines” Neal Martin. Peaches and cream with a hint of nutmeg and orange flower water. Soft; gentle; inviting. The palate is a joyous mix of generous ripe, fleshy, white fruits – peach and nectarine, with hints of spice and Chantilly cream, all held tight with a perfectly balanced lemon sorbet acidity, that grips and checks that fleshiness, providing a racy, mineral freshness. It’s a beautifully poised Burgundy. Perfect for a lobster, scallops, roast chicken… or just sitting in the sun on with a bottle and good friends. 13% drink now – 2018

Chablis 'Origine' Louis Moreau 2015

Louis Moreau makes classic, chiselled wines of class and refinement. When he told us about an exclusive project aimed to highlight the best his vineyards can offer, we were intrigued. What is “Origine” all about? The idea is to produce wines with the purest expression of Chablis. Following the results of extensive experimentation over a period of more than 10 years, Louis makes his selections from the best and oldest vines in his vineyards. He then chooses only the very best parcels to make his “Origine” wines.

Bright light lemon zest and pith with wet stone, a touch of cheese rind and chalk dust on the nose. A fresh, cool summer’s morning. The palate is crisp; bracing; Sancerre-like in its energy. Electric citrus running over stones with a hint of creaminess to it. This is that sort of jolting, vibrant white that thrills on the palate – light, brilliant bottled sunshine. Invigorating. Classic in style - this wine embodies the focused minerality of the Kimmeridgian soil. 13%

Rully La Barre, Domaine Ninot 2014

From a family with a history in wine dating back to the fourteenth century this is a vineyard that makes traditional and delicious wine. Meticulous attention is made to all aspects of the winemaking with vineyards handled as organically as possible, grapes hand harvested and 12 to 18 months in oak barrels. The oak is light on the nose and palate allowing for the purity of the fruit and the minerality to shine through.

Turner Pageot Les Choix 2012

If the La Rupture (their crazy Sauvignon Blanc) has gone a bit punk, this is writhing on its back and air-guitaring to the Ramones with an oversized safety pin through its nose. This Marsanne is left on its skins for several weeks during and after ferment, giving it a warm gold/bronze hue. The nose is heady, gloriously oxidative with dried peaches, apricots, cloves and cinnamon. Smells a bit like proper bread pudding. The palate is extraordinary – there’s real grip there and beautiful texture – it’s all like proper, waxy honeycomb with the richness of sweetness but totally dry. I think this would beat a fair few Palo Cortado when paired with good Pata Negra. What an amazing and interesting wine. 14% Drink now - 2025

Jarret de Montchenin Chateau de Passavant, Anjou 2014

I made a remarkable discovery today. It seems that Chenin Blanc isn't just made from ancient dryfarmed bush vines on the decomposed granite soils of the Swartland. No. Apparently it's also made in a place called the 'Loire' in France. Damn silly name, that. Can't see it catching on. Leave it to the experts on the African continent, I say. Okay, there may be a light dusting of irony in the above, but it illustrates a point: there's so much excitement about the Chenins being produced by South Africa's 'new wave' (a wave we continue to ride quite happily, thanks), that people seem to have forgotten all about the Loire and its wonderful heritage with Chenin Blanc - aka Pineau de la Loire. We felt it was high time we showed the region some love and went straight for the motherlode: a special cuvée, made only in the best vintages, from one of Anjou's most respected biodynamic producers - a wine which all three judges in the most recent Decanter panel blind tasting judged as the only 'Outstanding' wine in the Loire Dry Chenin Blanc category.

Condrieu 'Les Vallins', Domaine Blanc Christophe 2016

It's more restrained than the 2014 when we first encountered it, in Spring 2016, but with a few more months it will develop richer flavours. I think the 2016 is a finer wine than the 2014, and overall a better balanced wine, and its evolution will be slower meaning it will keep for longer. Delicate at first, but as you swirl the glass the aromas of apricot, peach, herbs and pollen notes begin to come out and captivate. As it opens the fruits become more pronounced on the palate. The texture (think finest down pillow) and concentration, a bit like a fine Barsac, is sufficient that you feel the density in your mouth, the beautiful lingering stone fruit flavours. It will develop in richness and flavour over the next 12 months, but retain its freshness and purity. I'll be sneaking a bottle for Christmas but it will probably be at its best from summer 2018 for 2 to 3 years.

Domaine Terre des Chardons "Marginal" 2014

Marginal is their 80% Syrah, 20% Grenache blend. Beautiful herby, spicy Syrah - cassis, dark chocolate dipped orange peel with concentrated black fruits, a whisp of herbs, tobacco, rocks and garrigue. The freshness is incredible, one wonders how it delivers such delicacy and precision with such a deep and intense core. No oak used here - in fact, the only barrels you'll see in the winery are there for ornamental reasons. Nothing mucked about with these wines - they're very low intervention with the smallest amounts of sulphur used in fermentation and before bottling. Picking, racking and bottling are all carried out in accordance with the phases of the moon. Perhaps that why you get such a wonderful expression of the fruit, and such lifted, floating aromas.

Lovely ripe plum and blackcurrant with cocoa dust, tobacco leaf, a touch of sandlewood. Very appealing. Rully Chaponniere, Domaine Ninot 2014

Burgundy vignerons and tonneliers since the 14th century, the Ninot family have done more than most to establish the quality wine credentials of a region that has been described as the 'undernourished country cousin' of the Côte d'Or. Sister and brother team Erell and Flavien have run the show since 2005, Erell making the wine while her brother maintains the vineyards. This is a hugely respected winemaking family and one central to the establishment of the Rully appellation as we now know it. Their grandfather, René, in particular, is regarded as a trailblazer in the region. The current generation remain totally committed to the finest expression of their Chalonnaise terroir, led by the formidable talent of winemaker Erell, who won the Trophée de Jeune Talent, Burgundy's best young winemaker award, just three years after she and her brother took over the estate from their father, Pierre-Marie. Latterly, France's top wine publication, La Revue du Vin de France, presented her with the Coup du Coeur - one of its most coveted winemaking awards.
