Domaine Horgelus Sauvignon and Gros Manseng 2017

Forget Cloudy Bay, forget Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, this Horgelus Sauvignon/Gros Manseng blend costs almost half the price and delivers as much if not more. Typically it shows bright, lifted notes of lemon/lime, melon and grapefruit and a delicate herbaceous character. The Sauvignon Blanc element brings a classic nettle and elderflower zip, while the Gros Manseng gives a gorgeous tropical fruit depth. Endlessly quaffable. Drink from: the moment it's in your possession. Drink until: the bottle is empty.

Domaine Michel Bedouet Muscadet Sur Lie 2017

We’ve been looking for a good Muscadet for aaaages and so we were over the moon when we chanced across this gem. It’s everything you want from a good Muscadet – like licking oyster shells by the sea. Salty and citrusy with a lipsmackingly refreshing acidity that makes this seafood's best pal. Think a Scando-esk Christmas eve feast of oysters, langoustines, lobster, smoked salmon and anything else that the oceans have to offer. My tip – make sure everything comes with a generous lashing of aioli and you’ll be in heaven!

Dolinebrune 'Roc Blanc' Mas Brunet, Domaine de Brunet 2016

A ray of sunshine from the south of France. The blend of Viognier, Vermentino, and Grenache Blanc hits the nose with hay, a touch of lavender, rose petal and the richness of quince or membrillo. The palate has a textured gristiness - it's fleshy and balanced with juicy tropical fruits and remarkable drinkability. This was made to slake thirsts in one of France's hottest regions. Here's hoping we have a summer that warrants its liberal application!

La Valse des Mansengs Domain Horgelus 2017

"This is the most exciting discovery I have made since I began writing this column — a true revelation! It soars from the glass with an extraordinary vitality and energy that belies its modest origins. It is drinking perfectly now, so I would merely enjoy it while it is so intense and delicious. There are traces of citrus and apricots in the background with floral notes from the small amount of Sauvignon Blanc grapes included. Made in the foothills of the Pyrenées, the owners only pick the grapes in the early hours of the day to preserve their aromatics. Fabulous." Bruce Palling, The Week

Pinot Blanc Portrait Philippe Zinck 2016

It has that handy thing of being neither Chardonnay or Sauvignon, so you’re not going to upset anyone, yet it appeals to people who like one or the other, but it’s no compromise; it happily replaces a Macon, Chablis or unoaked Chardonnays but has some of the aromatics and fruit of a generous Chenin. The aromas are a bit like ripe pear, melon and apples all in one with floral notes. It has good texture and the really expands and fills the mouth, with a nice light fresh tingle. Open a bottle and return to it 3 or 4 days later and it will still be delicious.

Sauvignon de Touraine, Domaine de la Rochette 2017

Think of a delicate, floral Sancerre and then think of a better, brighter, more huggable world in which that wine is close to half the price. That’s what our Fleur de Printemps Touraine gives you. It’s as pretty as a snowflake on Christmas morn, with elderflower and white floral notes that pirhouette over a core of lemon sorbet, while there’s an intense streak of minerality that belies this wine’s lesser known appellation. This is a Sauvignon Blanc that even the anti- Sauvignon Blanc brigade can warm to. An absolute winner with grilled fish. A slurp for you and a glug for the baking dish, which would adjust the right amount of zest and refreshment.

Mas Cristine Le Grill White Cotes du Roussillon 2017

A delicious mix of sunkissed Roussillon Macabeu and Vermentino fruit, this is as fresh and fun a white as you could wish for, but which also offers more mouthfeel and complexity than its peers. There’s a bit of white peach, yuzu citrus, and a more-ish fleshiness to the palate. This would make a lovely apero or a dry white to complement a starter of smoked salmon with citrus dressing and horseradish cream. It’s worth noting what the winemaker says about this wine: “The 2017 is particularly good as the fruit that would normally go for our top Vermentino, Rock n’ Rolle, all went in here instead. Why? Well, winter 2017 saw our first frost in 60 years, and then, in the summer, the boar got to the fruit as well. There just wasn’t enough to bottle it on its own, so we added it to Le Grill.”

Domaine Castera Jurancon Sec 2017

'This wine is another time-capsule experience for me. I first bought Castéra’s wines when I was in charge of wine buying for Bibendum Restaurant in the Michelin Building in Chelsea, London in 1990. My first experience of wines made from the Gros and Petit Manseng and Petit Courbu grapes; I was hooked. The violet and greengage nose balanced by the brutally dry palate was shocking and memorable. The wines are much more polished today, and that is a relief, but they are still haunting and delicious. Floral and crisp, you must taste this rare French classic.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

Mas Cristine Blanc Cotes du Roussillon 2017

A field(s) blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, Macabeu, Carignan Gris and occasionally a bit of Muscat Sec and Vermentino, it is fermented in both tanks and old oak. "2017 was absolutely brilliant for our whites - there is a jump and lift to them that brings a smile to my face, and balances the ripe, tropical notes that come from the Catalan sunshine with a bracing minerality and juiciness that brings it rushing from the glass. Age-worthy, but a delight in its youth, this is a rare wine that can pair with the most sublime of cuisine, think lobster with garlic butter, or just be enjoyed for itself."

Bourgogne Blanc Domaine Thibert et Fils 2014

From the winner of the best young winemaker in Burgundy. “A treasure trove”… ‘Readers disowning white Burgundy because of prices…should really stock up on these wines” Neal Martin. Peaches and cream with a hint of nutmeg and orange flower water. Soft; gentle; inviting. The palate is a joyous mix of generous ripe, fleshy, white fruits – peach and nectarine, with hints of spice and Chantilly cream, all held tight with a perfectly balanced lemon sorbet acidity, that grips and checks that fleshiness, providing a racy, mineral freshness. It’s a beautifully poised Burgundy. Perfect for a lobster, scallops, roast chicken… or just sitting in the sun on with a bottle and good friends. 13% drink now – 2018

Bright light lemon zest and pith with wet stone, a touch of cheese rind and chalk dust on the nose. A fresh, cool summer’s morning. The palate is crisp; bracing; Sancerre-like in its energy. Electric citrus running over stones with a hint of creaminess to it. This is that sort of jolting, vibrant white that thrills on the palate – light, brilliant bottled sunshine. Invigorating. Artisan Vignoble du Reveur 2016

A blend of Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer with 10 days of skin contact, making an orange wine. It is arguably our first orange wine at Swig, considering this for quite sometime we wanted to be sure to find the right one. Artisan brings us to a different universe of flavours! It is definitely spicy and exotic, slightly hoppy and freshly grounded white pepper, pink grapefruits, mandarin as well and mango skin and lychee flavours. Fresh and flavoursome as we like it, this wine is original and addictive. To be consumed slightly chilled.

Saumur Blanc, Les Fresnettes, Chateau de Targe 2015

As much a Christmas comfort as a pair of Rudolf slippers or the Muppet’s Christmas Carol on the box – there’s something absolutely ‘a point’ about a rich Loire Chenin at this time of year. Maybe it’s those lovely butterscotch and gingery spice hints. Whatever it is, it’s a winner. Chateau de Targé’s ripe and sumptuous 2015 has loads of texture and spice on the palate. It’s rich and toasty but not remotely overcooked, with plenty of mouthfilling buttery stone fruit and that signature zingy Chenin acidity. Class!

Turner Pageot Les Choix 2012

If the La Rupture (their crazy Sauvignon Blanc) has gone a bit punk, this is writhing on its back and air-guitaring to the Ramones with an oversized safety pin through its nose. This Marsanne is left on its skins for several weeks during and after ferment, giving it a warm gold/bronze hue. The nose is heady, gloriously oxidative with dried peaches, apricots, cloves and cinnamon. Smells a bit like proper bread pudding. The palate is extraordinary – there’s real grip there and beautiful texture – it’s all like proper, waxy honeycomb with the richness of sweetness but totally dry. I think this would beat a fair few Palo Cortado when paired with good Pata Negra. What an amazing and interesting wine. 14% Drink now - 2025

Domaine Castera Tauzy 2016

There are certain wine regions you know are capable of producing sensational and distinct wines but for one reason or another they have not really reached that level. Jurancon is just such a region where over half the wine is made by the coop and most of the rest is made by producers who have not really caught up with the market. At a wine fair in Montpellier recently I hit upon a very special producer. Frank Lihour is a young, fifth generation winemaker from Monein, who has lit a fire under this sleepy region with wines that sing with Jurancon purity and terroir. Franck has made wines for over 10 years around the world (including, it turns out, at our friends at Beaumont winery in South Africa) where he picked up many ideas to improve the quality of wine back home. He gingerly introduced them to his father, and now has taken over full throttle, and wow, these wines are superb!

Ladoix 1er Cru 'Les Grechons', Maratray-Dubreuil 2016

If we had to pick one white wine to see us through the many challenges and traumas of the Christmas period, it would be this yawningly gorgeous Ladoix prem cru. The 'Les Grechons' vineyard is an extension of the famous Corton-Charlemagne sites and so is the holy grail of Burgundy – but without the silly prices. It's one of those wines for people really in the know. Elegantly expressive, full of lovely rich stone fruit and melon character with hints of dried fruits and spice, toasted hazelnuts and hints of butterscotch. There's also a firm line of flinty minerality, and that delicious combination of texture, body and fresh acidity that the whites around Corton do so well. Fine enough to grace even the most fastidious Burgundy bibber's table.

Condrieu 'Les Vallins', Domaine Blanc Christophe 2016

It's more restrained than the 2014 when we first encountered it, in Spring 2016, but with a few more months it will develop richer flavours. I think the 2016 is a finer wine than the 2014, and overall a better balanced wine, and its evolution will be slower meaning it will keep for longer. Delicate at first, but as you swirl the glass the aromas of apricot, peach, herbs and pollen notes begin to come out and captivate. As it opens the fruits become more pronounced on the palate. The texture (think finest down pillow) and concentration, a bit like a fine Barsac, is sufficient that you feel the density in your mouth, the beautiful lingering stone fruit flavours. It will develop in richness and flavour over the next 12 months, but retain its freshness and purity. I'll be sneaking a bottle for Christmas but it will probably be at its best from summer 2018 for 2 to 3 years.

Syrah Laurence de Veyrac 2017

The Christmas story could have been very different. Had the three wise men been waylaid by a bottle of this Syrah on the way then they would certainly have chosen more exciting gifts! Gamay 'Fleur de Printemps' Domaine de la Rochette 2017

This is a joyful gamay, unpretentious, juicy and easy drinking from Touraine, central Loire. A slight pepperiness and a perfume of violet delicately emerges from the glass. The Gamay grape, so famous in Beaujolais, provides in the Loire a cleaner and sharper style. Rhone varieties meet the Languedoc in this ethereally lovely red blend. Think along the lines of a classic Chateauneuf du Pape with a little added freshness from Mas Brunet’s location in the cool, garriguey limestone plateau of the Terrasses de Larzac (prime Languedoc winegrowing country, a short hop from the ‘Lafite of the Languedoc’, Mas de Daumas Gassac). There’s a Margaux-like, sweetly spiced, silky plushness to this Corbieres which you’d have to be a real Ebeneezer not to be charmed by. Consistently one of our best-value reds and a wine that takes pride of place in the Swig Pantheon of All-Time Greats based on its unbeatable quality-price ratio, it marries the rich juiciness of Syrah with the smooth, damsony depths of Grenache Noir, while there’s a sweet suggestion of vanilla from some top-notch oak. Chateau Gelineau, Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2015

That touch of Pauillac, that fragrance of Margaux, that charm of St Emilion... ah, yes, I remember it well! Good Bordeaux at this price is as rare as a hen harrier sighting. We’ve not found better at this price for many years. It also happens to come from the excellent 2015 vintage, which can help propel a comparatively modest Bordeaux to heights of a more expensive wine. Our friend in Bordeaux who works with a few Chateaux and is not supposed to favour any particular one, did say, ‘Ah, nice choice – it’s a bit of a secret’. Very good with roasts.

L'Appel des Sereines Syrah, Francois Villard, N Rhone 2016

'I’ll never forget visiting this chap for the first time back in the early nineties. I nicknamed Villard and his two neighbours, Gaillard and Cuilleron, the Three Musketeers in my notes. They were young, outspoken, daring and made expressive, honest wines. Fastforward 25 years and they’re still heroes in the Northern Rhône, but only one makes a budget Syrah like this one. This is, hands down, one of the most fragrant, juicy and bargain-priced Syrahs on earth. Cotes du Rhone 'Les Clapas', Domaine Saint Amant 2016

Prettily floral – violets – with peppery soft fruit. Plenty of regional typicity here. Delicate and spicy with a little grainy tannin. A great value CDR. This is about delicacy and nuances rather than power, coming from a terroir much cooler than low lying vineyards. There is also no oak used on this wine. It is for drinking now. Drink with light summer food, barbeques, rabbit, chicken or lamb scented with herbs, sausages, pasta. This is beautifully made by Camille Nosworthy an architect who fell in love with making wine. It’s a 3.5 hectare vineyard of chalk and clay around the village of Suzette at 500 to 620m in the area of Beaumes de Venise in the spectacular Dentelles de Monmirail. These high vineyards and poor soil make the wine so different from those of the Rhone on the valley floor. Saint-Amant’s Les Clapas is not about weight; it’s about perfume, aromatics and vivacity.

Mas Cristine Rouge Cotes du Roussillon 2016

Our flagship red is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan. The Syrah and Grenache come from near the sea, while the Carignan ripens later, a bit further to the north. When first bottled, the Grenache dominates the nose with purity of fruit that can astonish. With a year and a bit in bottle, the varieties have integrated. The Syrah gives blueberry, and a hint of black olive. The Grenache offers black cherry and flower petal. The Carignan, only about 15% of the blend, gives earthy, rain-on-hot-asphalt notes (petrichor) and brings a bright, crunchy, sinewy acidity on the palate. This is drinking so well right now, and is truly a wine for all seasons. Chill it now, and enjoy that juicy crunch along with the dusty tannins. It’ll open with decanting. Save a case for colder times. That richness and ripeness of the south of France will prove perfect with game dishes, the grandest of roasts or even a warming stew. It’s incredibly well integrated at the moment, though the tannins will soften if you fancy sticking it away for longer. At the moment, though, you get both berry and stone fruit, plus some savoury, leather-tar-bacon notes. There’s even a bit of squid ink in there. The terroir is so close to Collioure, and still heavily influenced by the schist soils, that you get a tight structure and mineral backbone you don’t often find from wines in the south.

Domaine Terre des Chardons "Marginal" 2015

Picture this - a grotty disused sports hall-esque exhibition space 20 minutes out of Marseille, crammed full of organic winemakers, international buyers and a few weary, stained tooth members of team SWiG. Trust us, there's nothing glamorous about wine trade fairs. However, when you discover brilliant new wines, it makes it all worthwhile. May we introduce Terre des Chardons - the land of the thistles - authentic, organic wines from the Costieres de Nimes. After 30 years of producing vegetables, in 2000, owner Jerome decided to convert some of their apricot and fruit orchards to vineyards. From day one, they have been working in a biodynamic way, with Jerome stating, “it was the only way we wanted to go.” Despite being part of the Languedoc, these wines have somewhat of a Rhone character to them. These are the sort of wines you take a sniff of, and you are forced, like a magnet to take another - such perfume and poise. Eye opening wines! In fact, I think they might be the prettiest pair we have.

For some of us, there can be no Christmas without a good drop of Burgundy. We would simply deny its reality. Here at Swig we put a lot of effort into choosing the right one for our Christmas list. It’s not just about choosing a great wine, it’s about choosing a great wine that represents fantastic, siren-wailingly good value. Thanks to the great vintage conditions in this under-appreciated appellation, this is one the best-value wines in Burgundy, a true Holy Grail wine. After much research and tasting we’ve found this astonishingly classy Bordeaux from the hills overlooking St Emilion and Pomerol. We love its classical flavour of pencil lead, cedar and black fruits.
