Signalled by Jancis Robinson as one of her five favourite New World Pinot Noirs, this beauty leads the peloton of Mornington Peninsula Pinots that are currently turning heads as they sweep through the wine world. If you haven’t tried one, then it’s high time, because they are on a par with the great Pinots of New Zealand and Burgundy. Tom Carson is the man in the yellow jersey, not only making great wine at Yabby Lake, but also standing on the podium proselytising about the virtues of Mornington to anyone willing to listen. Yabby Lake is situated in the north of the peninsula, where the wines tend towards a firmer structure and deeper flavours. Tom’s 2008 vintage is a wine that combines depth with ethereal lightness of being, balancing pureed raspberry and blackcurrant richness with silky, airy notes of red cherries and violets. Jancis Robinson describes it as “intriguingly scented. Great balance and polish. Complete. Very lively and zesty. Lovely haunting finish.” Drink now-2015. 14% alc.
