Domaine de la Janasse 'Chaupin' 2009 - £354.00 per six
(including duty and delivery)

This impeccably run estate, in the capable hands of Christophe Sabon, his sister Isabelle, and their father, has emerged in the last decade as "one of the superstars of the southern Rhone valley" (Robert Parker), indeed, one of the bright shining stars of France. Their 45 hectare property is made up of some superb vineyard parcels (15 parcels in total) and produces three cuvees of wine, all of them dominated by Grenache. These are some of the purest, most authoritatively flavoured, yet undeniably elegant, suave and graceful wines being made in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The Cuvee Chaupin comes from a parcel of Grenache vines planted in 1912. The 2009 is one of the top five rated southern Rhones of the great 2009 vintage, not to mention one of the best wines the estate has ever produced. Whilst we have managed to secure a small allocation, availability is extremely limited and we are offering it on a first come first served basis.

Domaine de la Janasse 'Chaupin' 2009

"One of the most thrilling tastings I have had this year" - Robert Parker

Robert Parker:
"One of my favorites was already the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin (which is always aged in foudres and 600-liter demi-muids, two-thirds in the former and one-third in the latter) and this wine has really pon richness and intensity since I tasted it last year. An absolutely magnificent wine, it scored a good four points higher this year, and it is unusual for me to vary that much from one tasting to the next. Tipping the scales at 15% natural alcohol, this dense purple wine has noble sweetness and an extraordinary concentration of lavender, black cherry liqueur, licorice, and minerality. Full-bodied, with silky tannins, a multi-dimensional, unctuously textured, voluptuous palate and a stunning finish, this wine is outrageously delicious and a phenomenal expression of old-vine Grenache. It should drink well for up to 20+ years." 98 points

More about this wine:

Sourced from hand harvested, very old Grenache vines planted in the single vineyard 'haupin' which was planted in 1912 on sand and clay soils. The yields are a low 30-32 hl /ha and the grapes are picked and sorted by hand with partial destalking (80%). Maceration is for 21 days with a manual pumping over every 24hrs, oak ageing is for 12 months, 70% in large old barrels and 20% in 1/4 new barriques.
