Swig Staples

'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.'

Okay so this is less of a giant leap and more of a mahousive glug, but nevertheless we realise a huge list of wines can be very intimdating so we have whittled it down to our Swig staples to get you started and give you a very tasty idea of what it is we do.

2 x Mas Brunet Cuvee du Mazet, Domaine de Brunet 2015

Rhone varieties meet the Languedoc in this ethereally lovely red blend. Think along the lines of a classic Chateauneuf du Pape with a little added freshness from Mas Brunet’s location in the cool, garriguey limestone plateau of the Terrasses de Larzac (prime Languedoc winegrowing country, a short hop from the ‘Lafite of the Languedoc’, Mas de Daumas Gassac). This is Robin’s de facto house wine, a genuine portfolio classic which overdelivers like a hyperactive Santa.

2 x Domaine Horgelus Sauvignon and Gros Manseng 2017

Forget Cloudy Bay, forget Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre, this Horgelus Sauvignon/Gros Manseng blend costs almost half the price and delivers as much if not more. Typically it shows bright, lifted notes of lemon/lime, melon and grapefruit and a delicate herbaceous character. The Sauvignon Blanc element brings a classic nettle and elderflower zip, while the Gros Manseng gives a gorgeous tropical fruit depth. Endlessly quaffable. Drink from: the moment it's in your possession. Drink until: the bottle is empty.

2 x Ortrugo Bonellii 2017

Ortrugo? No we hadn’t heard of it either, but turns out that this hidden gem of Emilia Romagna is downright delicious. Layers of lemon sorbet scrumptiousness make this a perfect party pairing – just throw in some crab canapes or a garlic prawn starter and you’ll be on the way to vinous heaven.

2 x Soli Pinot Noir, Miroglio,Thracian Valley 2016

'OK, this is the joker in the pack. I hold my hands up. You will have two bottles of this cheeky Pinot in your mixed case and you will not believe what’s happening when you dip your hooter into the glass. It is budget-priced, of course, but your expectations will undoubtedly be set low and then the surprise will build in your eyebrows, before making it down to your smile. Yes, this is Bulgaria’s hidden weapon – and who the hell would have guessed it would be a Pinot? Not me, that’s for sure.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

2 x Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

2 x AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2018

Secateurs Chenin and SWiG Wines – they go together like holly and ivy, like Morecambe and Wise, like Boxing Day morning and Alka Seltzer. Andrew Jefford, a man who often makes words about wine do what he wants them to do in Decanter magazine, describes it as “an excellent Chenin” and “a fine aperitif”. How right he is. Jancis Robinson MW declares it “just the job for a party white”. Bang on, your highness. Jamie Goode describes its fine pear fruit character as “haunting”. If you would like to be haunted by pears this Christmas, look nay further. As always, an outstanding, quintessentially Swigalicious wine - and exceptionally good value.
