Swig Mixed Case of 6 Red Wines

1 x Chianti Rufina 'Cedro' Lavacchio 2016 (Organic)

'To prove that Swig can do traditional Tuscany as well as modern Tuscany, here is a stunning, budget Chianti from an estate which they introduced to me a few years ago. With a bright, red cherry and cranberry nose leading the way it seems that this wine might be a little slender, but it blossoms on the palate and rounds out to reward the drinker with juicy blackberry notes and even a touch of lavender and liquorice for good measure. This is a beautiful wine and it is drinking perfectly already.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

1 x Blaufrankisch Groszer Wein 2016

This wine brims over with aromas of juicy sour cherries, plum and blackberries, accented with a crushed black pepper note and a hint of a game. On the palate, there's really excellent structure, that classic Eisenberg spiciness and a concentrated yet fine dark fruit profile. Plenty of presence. Mouthwatering with a distinct minerality, giving a lingering impression of mineral salts. Compelling, quaffable and a superb introduction to a very special grape.

1 x Soli Pinot Noir, Miroglio,Thracian Valley 2016

'OK, this is the joker in the pack. I hold my hands up. You will have two bottles of this cheeky Pinot in your mixed case and you will not believe what’s happening when you dip your hooter into the glass. It is budget-priced, of course, but your expectations will undoubtedly be set low and then the surprise will build in your eyebrows, before making it down to your smile. Yes, this is Bulgaria’s hidden weapon – and who the hell would have guessed it would be a Pinot? Not me, that’s for sure.' Matthew Jukes, Money Week

1 x Touriga Vai Nua Fitapreta 2017

We’re reliably informed by winemaker Antonio Macanita that ‘Vai Nua’ means ‘goes naked’ in Portuguese. This should not be taken as an instruction to spice up your Christmas dinner party (“For some reason no one even touched the sprouts...”), but rather as an indicator that this is one of the brightest, most quaffable Portuguese reds ever likely to pass your lips. Touriga is known for producing big wines with lots of alcohol and tannin. Here it’s unoaked and as delicate as the dance of the Sugarplum Fairy, showing off the variety’s floral and hedgerow fruit notes.

1 x Alphabetical Red Vin Ordinaire 2016

A firm favourite with Swiggers and with top critics such as Jancis Robinson and Matthew Jukes, this Cape Bordeaux blend might just be the greatest creation since sliced bread. Or at least since the Turkey Feast sandwich. Without doubt one of the best-value South African wines on the market too. The bright, pure fruit has a compelling chocolatey, earthy richness to it. Candied orange dipped in dark chocolate, a hint of menthol and a lovely warm earthiness - think sunbaked earth and terracota pots with juicy autumn blackberries. It would work splendidly with a classic rosemary-studded shoulder of lamb.

1 x A A Badenhorst Papegaai Cinsault 2017

Did you know that the collective noun for a group of parrots is a ‘pandemonium of parrots’? Worthy of inclusion as a Christmas cracker factlet, that one. Enjoy your own pandemonium of parrots by investing a case or two of Adi Badenhorst’s Papegaai (Afrikaans for ‘parrot’) Cinsault. The 2017 red uses the same high-quality fruit from selected old Swartland bushvines as the first vintage, but this one has a slightly deeper fruit profile thanks to a small proportion of Tinta Barocca - that Portuguese interloper on to the South African wine scene which the likes of Adi, Eben Sadie and Marelise Niemann use to such impressive effect. Joyous juice with more than a hint of Swartland swagger.
