Mixed 12 of Terre de Chardons' Wines

Unless you’ve taken a holiday in the south of France, 'Costières de Nîmes' probably won't mean much to you. The southernmost wine-growing area of the Rhône Valley and formerly part of the Languedoc, it's been described as “a hyphen between the Rhône and the Camargue”. We champion good punctuation here at Swig HQ (where, would we, be with-out it!), and are more than happy when such a hyphen of an appellation surprises us with seductive reds like these.
The best terroir here is similar to that of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, though more uniform, with gravelly soils full of quartzite pebbles deposited by the Rhône and Durance rivers. In summer, the heat these stones absorb meet the cool breezes blowing across the Petite Camargue to create a convection effect, moderating temperatures and thus avoiding horribly over-ripe berries and bland, highly alcoholic wines.
The wines of Costières de Nîmes - predominantly red blends using Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, though with a fair amount of rosé and some whites - can be a mixed bag depending on the vineyard sites and winemaker style (or lack of it). In truth, there's a lot of dodgy Vins de Pays sloshing about here. But there are also some very good wines. Those of Terre des Chardons benefit from the dedication of owner Jérôme Chardon and winemaker Olivier Zohar (a former French MasterChef finalist!) to biodynamic viticulture and to hands-off winemaking. They stand out for their lifted, floral character and wonderful suppleness. Forget hot, tannic, jammy southern French reds - these are endlessly quaffable wines that are full of varietal character.

6 x Domaine Terre des Chardons "Marginal" 2014

Marginal is their 80% Syrah, 20% Grenache blend. Beautiful herby, spicy Syrah - cassis, dark chocolate dipped orange peel with concentrated black fruits, a whisp of herbs, tobacco, rocks and garrigue. The freshness is incredible, one wonders how it delivers such delicacy and precision with such a deep and intense core. No oak used here - in fact, the only barrels you'll see in the winery are there for ornamental reasons. Nothing mucked about with these wines - they're very low intervention with the smallest amounts of sulphur used in fermentation and before bottling. Picking, racking and bottling are all carried out in accordance with the phases of the moon. Perhaps that why you get such a wonderful expression of the fruit, and such lifted, floating aromas.

6 x Domaine Terre des Chardons Bien Lune 2015

Lovely fresh, frilly, and breezy nature and fruit aromas. Bacon fat. Violets as well, wild blueberries, rhubarb, like an English Summer garden. The palate is reminiscent of sticking your finger in the dish when you're making a Summer pudding. Nothing rustic here despite gentle, precise tannins- all about that intense fragrance.
